Chapter 162018—late June Eric was in the kitchen Saturday morning when Carlton’s father turned up. “I smell coffee,” he said. “Yes, sir,” Eric said. “Have a seat, and I’ll pour you a cup.” Eric poured the coffee, and received a polite “Thank you” from Carlton’s father, who added, “Where’s Carlton?” “I always get up first, but he’ll be along in a few minutes,” Eric said. “Something else smells good in here. Besides the coffee, that is.” “I have scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and cheese grits.” “I’ll take some of all of them, provided I can get them eaten before my wife shows up.
