Chapter 1: The Betrayal
The feeling of change and the scent of autumn leaves coated the damp end-of-October air. With her hand safely tucked within Eden's, Kayla Hardy walked beside him. Even after two years of dating, she still felt safe and loved every second she spent with him. Belle, who had been her best friend since childhood, giggled as she recalled a memory from their time together in high school. Kayla thought all three of them had always been a close trio that nothing could ever separate. "Where are we exactly going?" With doubt mixed with curiosity, Kayla questioned. After walking for around thirty minutes, they had left their small town's familiar streets behind and were making their way toward the desolate outskirts. Belle gave Eden a quick look and responded with her typical cheeky smile, "It's a surprise, Kay. You're going to love it." Eden, who had dark hair that curled at the ends and was tall and broad-shouldered, gave Kayla a comforting squeeze on the hand. The affection that always appeared in his blue eyes was replaced by something else Kayla couldn't quite identify. But she had total faith in him. Along with Belle, Eden was her rock — the one person who constantly believed in her. The further they got from town, the quieter the streets became. Here, the buildings were older and sometimes deserted, with boarded-up windows and crumbling brick walls. Long shadows stretched across the cracked pavement as the sun dipped lower in the sky. They finally came to a stop in front of a large, abandoned structure. It was quite a distance from the light-filled, comfortable homes they had left behind. Paint covered the windows, and the doors hung off their hinges. Above the entrance, a rusty sign creaked in the wind, its faded letters unreadable. Kayla paused. "An abandoned building? Really?" Belle nodded, excitement shining in her eyes. "Trust us. You'll see." Eden released Kayla's hand and pushed the creaking door open. "Come on, Kay. It's just a little adventure." Kayla followed them inside with a weak smile, but something was starting to feel off in her chest. The building's interior was nearly as shabby as its exterior. The last of the sunlight slipped through the cracks in the boarded-up windows, catching the dust in the air. The sound of rust and decay filled the space, and the floorboards creaked beneath their feet. "What's the surprise?" Kayla asked, her voice echoing slightly in the empty room. She tried to keep her tone light, but the odd atmosphere of the location was unsettling. Kayla's heart skipped a beat as Eden and Belle exchanged a look. She recognized the gaze they shared—a silent communication between them. But this time, it felt different, more concerning. "Guys?" Kayla's voice trembled as she looked between them. "What's going on?" Eden took a step closer, but his eyes were cold. His expression was detached and frigid, as though he had already cut ties with her. "We need to tell you something, Kayla." The way he said her name made her blood run cold. Kayla took a step back, her eyes darting between Belle and Eden. "What do you mean? What is happening?" Belle's earlier excitement vanished from her voice as she spoke. "We didn't bring you here for a surprise. We brought you here because this is the end." Kayla's heart pounded in her chest as she struggled to process what they were saying. "The end? What are you talking about?" Eden's gaze hardened, his voice cold and emotionless. "It’s over, Kayla. Us. You and me." The words hit her like a punch to the gut, knocking the breath out of her. "Over? Eden, what are you saying? We’ve been together for two years! You can’t just—" Belle cut in sharply. "Eden and I… we’ve been together for months now. We’ve been planning this." Kayla's world spun as she tried to grasp what Belle was saying. Her best friend—her closest confidante—had been plotting this with her boyfriend? The shock was overwhelming, and for a moment, she couldn’t find the words to respond. "Belle, why?" Kayla's voice was barely more than a whisper, her throat tight with the threat of tears. "We’ve been best friends since we were kids. How could you do this to me?" Belle's expression was cold, devoid of the warmth and kindness Kayla had always known. "Because, Kayla, you’re in the way. You always have been." Kayla's heart shattered as the full extent of the betrayal sank in. She had always been there for Belle, had trusted her with everything, and now she was being cast aside like she meant nothing. "Eden…" she turned to him, her voice trembling. "How could you? I thought you loved me." Eden didn’t meet her gaze. "It’s not about love, Kayla. It’s about what’s necessary. Belle and I… we’re moving on, and you’re not part of that." The world seemed to close in on Kayla as she realized the depth of their deception. The two people she trusted most had conspired against her, planning her downfall behind her back. But what was even more terrifying was the cold, calculated way they were going about it. "If you wanted to break up, you could have just told me," Kayla said, trying to keep the desperation out of her voice. "Why bring me here? Why all of this?" Eden sighed, as if her confusion was an inconvenience. "You know too much, Kayla. About us, about what we’re planning. We can’t let you just walk away." Fear gripped her, squeezing her chest like a vice. "I don’t know anything! I haven’t done anything! Just let me go, and I’ll leave. I won’t bother you again, I swear." But Eden and Belle didn’t seem to be listening. Belle reached into her bag and pulled out a small vial filled with a dark, viscous liquid. She held it up, letting the dim light catch the substance inside. Kayla’s stomach turned as she realized what it might be. "What… what is that?" Kayla asked, her voice barely more than a whisper. "It’s something to make this easier," Belle said, stepping closer with the vial in hand. "For us, at least." Kayla’s instincts screamed at her to run, but Eden moved behind her, cutting off her escape. Panic surged through her veins as she looked between them, searching for any sign of the people she once loved. "Please, don’t do this," Kayla begged, tears welling up in her eyes. "We can work this out. I’ll leave, I’ll disappear. Just don’t hurt me." Eden’s face was unreadable, but his voice was cold and final. "It’s too late for that, Kayla." With a burst of adrenaline, Kayla tried to push past Eden, but he was too strong. He grabbed her arms, pinning them behind her back as Belle approached with the vial. Kayla struggled, her heart racing in sheer terror, but she was no match for Eden’s strength. "Stop fighting, Kayla," Belle said, her voice devoid of any emotion. "It’ll only make this harder for you." Kayla thrashed in Eden’s grip, desperate to escape, but he held her firmly in place. Belle forced the vial to Kayla’s lips, the liquid inside burning as it touched her tongue. Kayla tried to spit it out, but Eden tightened his grip, forcing her to swallow the bitter, acrid substance. It tasted like poison, and as it slid down her throat, Kayla knew that’s exactly what it was. Her vision blurred, the world spinning around her as the poison took hold. Kayla’s legs gave out, and she would have collapsed if Eden hadn’t been holding her up. The sounds of Belle’s laughter and Eden’s cold words began to fade, becoming distant echoes in her mind. "You should have stayed out of our way," Belle’s voice reached her, distorted and far away. "This is your fault, Kayla." Darkness closed in, but even as she slipped away, Kayla’s mind clung to one thought: *Why?* How could they do this to her? The pain of betrayal was worse than any physical agony, worse than the poison burning through her veins. As her consciousness faded, the last thing she saw was Eden’s face, devoid of any remorse or guilt. The man she loved, the man she trusted, was the one who had delivered her to this fate. The world around her dimmed, and with a final, shuddering breath, Kayla’s vision went black. But this wasn’t the end. Somewhere deep inside, a spark of life remained, a flicker of defiance that refused to be extinguished. Though her body succumbed to the poison, her spirit lingered, trapped between life and death, caught in the cruel web woven by those she had once called her own. The world she had known was gone, but Kayla was not. She was falling, deeper and deeper into the darkness, into a place where her enemies would soon learn that they had made a grave mistake.
