Chapter Ten

1130 Words
Jack. After speaking to Mum and Drew I thought I had managed to settle my mind slightly, however after reading the same paragraph over and over and realising I had no idea what it said, I concluded that I was wasting my time. I put my book back in my bag and headed downstairs. I made my way to the kitchen hoping that Mum and Drew had left something there from dinner. I was pleased when I opened the refrigerator and saw some chicken wings and some vegetables and grabbed myself a plate. My stomach let out a loud growl as I plated it up and popped it in the microwave. As I sat on the chair by the kitchen island watching the plate spin inside, my mind began to drift back to Lola and I found myself wondering for the hundredth time why she had lied to me about where she lived. The beep of the timer on the microwave pulled me back from my thoughts and I stood up to fetch my food. I was just closing the microwave door when I heard the front door open and close quietly. I rolled my eyes knowing it was Jacob arriving back and pointlessly trying to sneak back in the house, without Mum or Drew realising how late he was. They have werewolf hearing and he still thinks he can creep about unnoticed. He came straight into the kitchen and I could tell from looking at him that he had taken a long run with Ash. Still pissed at him for the events that day, I made to walk past him without speaking but he caught hold of my arm preventing me from walking any further without dropping my plate. " What?" I snapped at him without even bothering to turn around. " Jack, seriously how many times do you want me to say sorry about what I said?" " I don't even really care about that anymore, I have other s**t on my mind" I told him. I felt him let go of my arm and I turned slowly to face him. " Like what?" He asked me. I looked at him and felt bad about arguing with him. Ruby's actions weren't really his fault after all and I know he genuinely didn't mean to blurt out my personal life like that. " I am really worried about Lola if you must know." His head dropped slightly and I saw a flash of guilt on his face. " I get that. I am honestly sorry for what went down today. I will speak to Ruby once the dust has settled a bit ok?" I took a deep breath and nodded. " She lied to me" I told him. " Who did? Lola?" He asked. " Yes." " Lied about what?" " You know I told you I was worried about her so I drove her home?" " Yeah, that's why you missed all the morning lessons" " Well, I was still worried when I left school, her head was really bad J. So I drove back to her house to check she was ok." I paused, feeling confused as I saw Jacob's face start to look worried himself. " And?" He pressed for me to continue. " And, she wasn't there. It turns out the house I dropped her at is not her house. I spoke to a neighbour and she just cleans there." Jacob was now looking as confused as I felt. " Why would she lie?" He said, asking me the same question I had been asking myself for the last few hours. " I don't know why. But you can see now why I am worried. She must have left that house after I dropped her off and now I have no idea where she is. What if she is lying somewhere hurt? The house is right next to the forest, she might have wandered in there concused." I felt the panic start to rise in me as I pictured her, collapsed and cold somewhere all alone with no one to help her. " We could go and look for her." Jacob suddenly suggested. " What?" I was shocked to hear him suggest it. " Wouldn't your girlfriend have something to say about that?" I challenged him. He shrugged. " She knows I came home to square things with you, if you are worried about her then I need to help you look." " Thank you. I have been thinking about nothing else since I got home but I have no idea where to start." " For someone so smart you can be so dumb at times." He said shaking his head. " Oh yeah, well what do you suggest then?" " We go back to the house you dropped her off at." " I told you, I went back. She isn't there." I argued. " Yeah, but you were in human form. If we go back in wolf form, our senses will be heightened even more and they may be able to pick up her scent." I stared at him for a moment, mentally kicking myself for being so stupid. Of course, it was the perfect idea and if it had occurred to me earlier I could have saved myself a lot of worry. Sure I would have still had to wait for it to get late and reduce the risk of anyone seeing me in wolf form, but having a plan in place would have calmed me down significantly. " I can't believe I didn't think of that myself." " Never mind that now, time is ticking. If she is hurt we do need to find her." " Why do you care about her welfare all of a sudden?" I quizzed him. " I don't. But you clearly do and I don't like seeing you worried like this." I pulled him in for a quick hug. " Thanks, J." " Don't mention it. Now let's get going. We don't want to be out all night." I turned and headed towards the packhouse door with Jacob close behind me. As soon as we had safely snuck outside, I started to head towards my car. Jacob pulled me back and pointed towards the forest. " Best to go in wolf form." " What if we are seen?" " You said this house was right next to the forest, I bet we can go through there and get to it without being seen. Besides, if we take the car we are going to have to find somewhere to shift and ditch the car." I nodded in agreement and followed him towards the forest. As soon as we reached it we quickly stripped and gave our wolves control.
