Chapter Six

Jack I was glad when Lola finally agreed to a ride home, but I still wished she had let me take her to the nurse. Still, I could understand her reluctance. Ruby and her little gang were nasty pieces of work, and now they had Lola in their sights they would be relentless. I figured Lola knew that questions would be asked about her injury, and if it came out what happened, it would make things much worse. I have made up my mind to try and speak to Jacob about it. She is his girlfriend and he should say something to her. She couldn't go around treating people the way she did. As I drove towards the address Lola gave me, I thought about trying to talk to her, but she didn't seem to want to talk. Understandable. We have only just met properly for the first time, and she has had a rough morning. " Thank you for the ride." She smiled at me as I pulled up to the house. Before she had a chance, I jumped out of my door and ran to open hers, taking her hand as she climbed out. I couldn't help but notice her wince as she climbed out. " Are you sure you are going to be ok?" I asked. " Absolutely." " Maybe I'll just walk you in..." " I would prefer if you didn't. My mother is already going to be worried to see my head. I don't want to add to her concern seeing me come home with a boy she doesn't know. She is rather protective." I don't know why, but I detected a hint of sadness in her voice when she spoke of her mother. I saw her bright green eyes glisten slightly as she seemed to be holding back tears. I relented. She has had a bad enough day as it is without me making things awkward for her at home, too. " Ok. I won't come inside, but I am going to wait until you are inside before I leave." " Thank you for driving me home and for your concern today. It was nice to have someone looking out for me." " Anytime," I smiled at her. "I want to give you my number. I can come and give you a ride to school tomorrow if you feel up to it." " I don't know if I will be in school tomorrow." " Well, take it anyway, and don't worry too much about Ruby. I will speak to Jacob and get him to tell her to back off." " No! I don't think that will help." She sounded panicked. " Ok, but I'm going to keep an eye on her and you." I winked at her, and she blushed bright red. I handed her my number, and she turned and walked up the path to the house without looking back again. I was as good as my word and waited until she opened the door and stepped inside. I drove back to school feeling much better about the morning events. Sure, I was still pissed at Jacob, but I felt better having made sure Lola was OK. As I pulled into the park back at the school, I could see lots of the students milling about outside. A glance at my watch to check the time confirmed it. It was lunchtime. Before I could exit my car, I spotted Jacob running towards me. I let out a frustrated breath and remained seated. It is better to talk in the car away from everyone else than publicly, like earlier in the corridor. He pulled open the passenger side door and jumped in, shutting it firmly behind him. " Where the hell have you been?" He asked. " Around." I was still feeling agitated with him. " Seriously? You miss an entire morning's classes, and that's all I'm going to get from you?" " What do you want me to say?" I shot back at him. " You announced to the entire school that I'm a virgin. That s**t is private, J." " I know, and I'm sorry. I was out of order. I just don't get what your problem is with Ruby. She is nothing but nice to you, and you jump to the defence of some random girl." "Lola" " Excuse me?" " That girl's name is Lola." " Well, whatever her name is. She is a nobody to us." " She is not a nobody. She's lovely, and now she is too scared to come back to school today!" I snapped at him angrily. He stared at me for a second, clearly wondering how I could know that, and then the penny dropped. " That's where you have been. That's how you know her name. You have been with her." " I took her home if you must know. I found her in the woods, crying and scared. She's got a bad wound on her head with a big patch of her hair missing. She wouldn't even go to the nurse." " Why not? I mean, it can't be that bad if she hasn't been to see the nurse. She is human. After all, it's not like it'll just heal after a few hours like it would for us." " Seriously?" I asked him incredulously. " You can't figure that one out?" He shrugged and shook his head. " She won't go because she knows that the first thing the nurse will do after she has patched her up is contact the principal. It is obviously not an accidental injury." " So?" He said, still not getting it. " So he would then question her about how it happened. She is scared that if he finds out what happened, he will punish your girlfriend, and if that happens, she will make her life a living hell!" " No, Ruby isn't like that. Today was a one-off!" He started to argue and defend her again. I held up my hand, cutting him off. " If you really believe that, then this conversation is over." He sighed and opened the door, turning to get out of the car. I grabbed hold of his shoulder before he could exit. " Just so you know, I have given Lola my number and promised to look out for her at school. So if Ruby attacks her again, I will be there." He turned back to look at me. " Are you threatening my girlfriend?" He asked in disbelief. " Not at all. It shouldn't be a problem anyway. Like you said, it was a one-off, and Ruby isn't going to hurt her again." He glared at me for a moment, and we both knew I had won this argument. He climbed out of the car and stomped away, not once looking back. I went back to school for my afternoon lessons, but probably shouldn't have bothered, I couldn't concentrate much at all. I just kept thinking about Lola and wondering if she was feeling better, I was hoping her mum was taking good care of her. After the final bell, I went to my car to wait for Jacob, even though I was still irritated with him, I had driven us here so it was only right I waited for him and take him home. I sat for a few minutes, wondering how long he was going to be before I got a mindlink from him. " Going to chill at Ruby's for a bit." " Fine, she can give you a ride home." " Yeah." I started the car and set off. My mind is still on Lola. I couldn't shake the image of the terrified girl from my mind. I must have been driving for a good ten minutes before I realised I wasn't even heading home. I was heading towards Lola's house. " Oh well, no harm in checking on her," I thought as I neared her house. Pulling up outside, I left the car and walked up the small driveway. I knocked on the door and waited. I had already come up with the excuse to use it if her mother answered. I was going to say I had been asked by a teacher to drop off some of Lola's work she had missed today. I waited and knocked again. No movement and no answer.
