The Birthday celebration 1

780 Words
Lucy stood frozen, her eyes darting between the magnificent cake, the delicate flower in her hand, and the man who had brought them. Every doubt that had crossed her mind vanished. Her obsession with Brian was worth it. It didn’t matter that he was a low-ranking sales representative. To her, Brian possessed something money could never buy. By now, the staff had crowded into the room, their voices filling the space with artificial cheer. But Lucy barely heard them. Her heart thundered against her ribs as Arthur’s voice cut through the noise. Arthur smiled warmly, gesturing toward the dessert table. He casually mentioned that he had sent Brian to buy a simple gift, but Brian had gone above and beyond to secure this masterpiece. Lucy turned and gazed at Brian, her heart leaping. She looked down at the cake, then shifted her gaze back to the flower clutched tightly in her hand. A wave of profound appreciation washed over her. Unable to hide her delight, she looked straight into Brian’s eyes and said, "You did well, Brian." A soft, genuine smile spread across Brian’s face. He bowed his head slightly. "All for the celebration, ma'am," he replied, his voice smooth and grounding. Arthur let out a hearty laugh, but the rest of the room fell into a suffocating, envious silence. The staff watched the interaction with narrowed eyes and clenched jaws. The implications sent shockwaves through the corporate hierarchy; everyone feared that this errand would catapult Brian into the inner circle. This was loudest in the mind of Thawani, the sales manager. He stood in the corner, his eyes burning with rage. To Thawani, Brian was just an ordinary representative who should be kept in his place. Lucy was acutely aware of the hostile atmosphere. She knew the corporate wolves were watching, waiting for a slip-up. She desperately didn’t want her father to notice how deeply obsessed she was with Brian. Summoning her upbringing, she forced a mask of polite elegance. When her father revealed that Brian had personally ensured the cake was decorated in her absolute favorite color, her chest tightened with an emotional ache. To the rest of the staff, Lucy was merely the unreachable heiress. They stared at the flower in her hand, dismissing it as an ordinary stick, completely unable to fathom that it meant more to her than a million-dollar necklace. "Now everyone, it's time to cut the cake!" Arthur’s booming voice broke the tension. The crowd clapped as Lucy was led to the center of the room. Sensing her fatigue, Arthur placed his hand over hers to steady the silver knife. The staff began to shout together: "T... W... E... N... T... Y!" With a smooth motion at the final letter, they cut through the beautiful cake. Instantly, the room erupted. The tense atmosphere evaporated into a fog of celebration as champagne bubbled into crystal flutes. The joy was strictly timed. The moment the clock struck six, the music stopped and the staff cleared out. Outside, luxury cars lined the street. Lucy’s personal driver stood by her sedan, but she shook her head. She chose to be in her father’s car instead, sitting in the front passenger seat—a calculated move to ensure he couldn't easily catch her expressions in the rearview mirror. As the car glided through the traffic, Lucy stared out the window. Down in her lap, hidden from her father's line of sight, she gently cradled the flower. A soft, irrepressible smile broke across her face. She smiled at the petals, her thumb tracing them delicately. The weight of her hidden love pressed down on her chest. At one point, she felt tears pricking at her eyes, but she forced them back. She couldn't let her father see her cry over a flower. When they arrived at the estate, the exhaustion caught up with her. She went straight upstairs, stepped inside her room, and turned the lock with a sharp click. She needed a space where the "Heiress" could disappear, leaving only the girl who was desperately in love. Lucy sat on her massive bed, placing the flower on the silk sheets. She leaned over, letting her eyes feast on it. It was tangible proof that the man she was obsessed with had thought of her. Brian had done all of this without having any idea about her obsession. He had no clue that the powerful heiress stayed awake at night thinking about him. She picked up the flower, holding it close to her chest. The silence of her bedroom felt both comforting and heavy. One burning question echoed through her mind: Will Father finally allow me to love Brian?
