The digital clock on the nightstand glowed a sharp neon green. It was 4:30 AM when Lucy’s eyes fluttered open. As she shifted to sit up, her hand brushed against something velvety.
She paused. Resting beside her pillow was the flower.
A soft, involuntary smile tugged at her lips. She had fallen asleep holding it. For a moment, the rest of the world ceased to exist. She stared at the petals, admiring their hue and the warmth they brought into her chest. It was a brief, stolen moment of adoration before reality snapped back.
She reluctantly set the blossom down and rushed to the bathroom. When she emerged, the fog of sleep was gone, replaced by a sharp, calculating focus.
She leaned against the sink, staring at her reflection. Her mind was racing. How had Brian managed to go to the mall? How had he secured that specific, perfect cake?
Navigating this conversation would be like walking through a minefield. Her father, Arthur, was a man who possessed a corporate-honed intuition that could spot an ulterior motive a mile away.
If I want information, I have to play this smart, she thought. I need to put him in a position where he’s relaxed and willing to talk.
An idea struck her. Today, she would take charge of her father’s breakfast.
For the next hour, Lucy bustled around the quiet kitchen. By 6:00 AM, the rich, earthy aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. She balanced a tray and made her way up the grand staircase.
To her surprise, the door swung open almost immediately. Arthur stood there, already partially dressed. He stopped, his eyes sweeping over his daughter with the breakfast tray. His face widened in surprise.
"Good morning, Father," Lucy said, offering her sweetest, most innocent smile.
"Good morning," Arthur replied, his voice laced with disbelief. "You are up early."
"Yes, Father. I know you are preparing for work, so I decided to prepare your breakfast myself."
Arthur’s astonishment deepened. His daughter was never an early riser. He reasoned that perhaps this maturity was a positive change brought on by her twentieth birthday. He had no idea this was a calculated move to extract information.
"Alright, let's go to the dining room," he said, a proud smile breaking through.
They sat across from one another, sipping the coffee. Lucy waited for the perfect opening.
"Thank you, Father, for yesterday," she began, her tone soft. "Thank you for the cake and for making everything so special."
Arthur’s chest swelled with pride. "Anything for my daughter. You deserve the best."
"The cake really made my day colorful," Lucy continued, holding her breath.
Arthur set his cup down, a look of recollection in his eyes. "You know, Brian is so smart. When I sent him to get it, he noticed you always dress in pink for the office. Because of that, he decided on his own to get a pink iced cake."
A wave of joy flooded Lucy’s heart. He noticed my clothes. Brian had chosen the color specifically for her.
"Really?" she asked, trying to keep her voice level.
"Yes," Arthur nodded, clearly impressed. "And honestly, I'm quite surprised by him. He actually drove my personal car. Even when I tested him with questions about the dashboard and mechanics, he answered everything flawlessly. I never knew he could drive."
The words hit Lucy like a physical blow.
Brian drives?
The realization sent her mind into a frenzy. A sales rep who could flawlessly operate a luxury vehicle? Who exactly was Brian?
Panic threatened to break her mask. She pretended not to hear the implications, focusing instead on the fact that her father was actively praising him. She opened her mouth to ask more, but Arthur checked his watch and stood up abruptly.
"I have a major deal by 7:30," he announced, adjusting his jacket. "I need to rush to the office."
"Alright, Daddy."
The room fell silent. Lucy remained seated, her coffee growing cold. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place.
If Brian knows how to drive, he doesn't have to be confined to the marketing floor.
A slow, determined smile spread across her face. I will tell my father to make him my personal driver.
The brilliance of the plan sent a thrill through her veins. As her driver, Brian would be reassigned from the general company roster straight to her daily schedule. He would be the one waiting for her, opening the door for her, and spending hours with her in the enclosed, intimate space of the car.
He won't be able to escape me, she thought, her gaze locking onto the empty hallway. And from there, he will finally start noticing my obsession.
