Blurb

In a bustling city where dreams often collide with reality, two strangers meet by chance under circumstances neither of them planned. One is carrying the weight of a past heartbreak they swore never to revisit, while the other is quietly rebuilding their life after a loss that changed everything. What begins as an ordinary encounter slowly unfolds into a deep, emotionally charged connection shaped by late-night conversations, unspoken fears, misunderstandings, and moments of undeniable closeness. As their lives intertwine over time, they are forced to confront personal flaws, external pressures, and the question of whether love is worth the risk of being broken again. This slow-burn romance explores trust, healing, and the courage it takes to choose someone, day after day, even when the future feels uncertain.

the first pause
Chapter One — The First Pause Lena Harper didn’t believe in signs anymore. Life had taught her that moments only meant what you survived after them. Still, as she stood on the crowded sidewalk outside a small café she’d never noticed before, she felt something unfamiliar slow her steps. The city moved the way it always did—cars rushing past, people glued to their phones, conversations blending into noise. Lena had just finished another long shift and was halfway through mentally listing everything she still needed to fix in her life when she reached for the café door. At the same moment, someone else did. Their hands brushed. Just briefly. Just enough. “I—sorry,” the man said, pulling back quickly. Lena looked up. He was tall, dark-haired, with tired eyes that suggested he carried more thoughts than he ever spoke aloud. He smiled politely, the kind of smile that didn’t expect anything in return. “No, that’s my fault,” she replied, even though it wasn’t. They stood there for a second longer than necessary, the door half-open, the world paused between them. Lena noticed how quiet he was—not awkwardly so, but deliberately, as if silence was something he trusted. “Go ahead,” he said, stepping aside. “Thanks.” Inside, the café was warm, dimly lit, and smelled like cinnamon and coffee. Lena ordered her usual and waited at the counter, unaware that he had chosen a table near the window—the one she always picked when she wanted to feel less alone. When she turned and saw him there, already seated, their eyes met again. This time, neither of them looked away first. Lena didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of a story neither of them had planned—one that would test everything they thought they knew about staying, leaving, and choosing someone even when fear whispered otherwise. And somewhere deep inside, a belief she thought she’d buried stirred quietly back to life.
