Chapter Six — Unexpected Confessions
The next evening, the city felt quieter than usual, as if it, too, was giving Lena and Ethan space to breathe. The café’s warm lights welcomed her like an old friend, and there he was, already seated with his notebook open, scribbling something absentmindedly.
“Hey,” Lena said softly, sliding into her chair.
“Hey,” he replied, eyes lighting up. “Sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean to… complicate things.”
“It’s okay,” Lena said, stirring her coffee. “I just… I don’t know. I felt something I wasn’t ready to feel.”
Ethan nodded, leaning back. “It’s mutual. I felt it too. Yesterday reminded me… of how fragile things can be. But I don’t want to lose what’s starting here.”
Lena’s heart skipped. “You mean… this?” she asked, gesturing vaguely between them.
“This,” he confirmed, a small, earnest smile tugging at his lips. “I know we’re moving slowly. But I also know I don’t want to pretend I don’t care about you.”
For a moment, they sat in silence, listening to the faint hum of conversation and clinking cups around them. Then Lena’s voice broke the quiet.
“I care too,” she admitted. “But it’s scary. I’ve been hurt before. I don’t want to repeat it.”
Ethan reached across the table, his hand resting near hers, careful not to impose, but close enough to feel connected. “I get that,” he said softly. “But maybe… the right person doesn’t push you into fear. Maybe they just… wait with you, and hope you take the risk together.”
Lena felt warmth spread through her chest, a cautious hope she hadn’t allowed herself in months. “You’re asking me to trust you?”
“I am,” he said simply, eyes sincere. “And I’ll wait as long as it takes.”
The café’s lights flickered softly, and outside, the city’s usual noise faded into the background. For the first time, Lena believed that maybe taking a risk—letting someone in—could be worth it.
As they left the café together, walking side by side under the streetlights, the closeness felt natural, easy, and yet thrilling. Neither of them knew what the future held, but for the first time, they didn’t mind not knowing.
The first crack of fear had surfaced, but so had the first spark of trust. And trust, Lena realized, might just be the beginning of something extraordinary.
