misunderstood intentions

Chapter Eight — Misunderstood Intentions Monday morning arrived with its usual rush, but Lena felt an unusual heaviness in her chest. She had been looking forward to seeing Ethan over the weekend, but a text from him—short, delayed, and slightly vague—had left her unsettled. “Can’t meet today. Busy. Rain check?” She understood work could get in the way, yet a small, stubborn part of her twisted the words into something darker. Did he not want to see her? Was she reading too much into it? By mid-afternoon, she arrived at the café anyway, hoping for clarity. Ethan was already there, laptop open, typing furiously. He looked up as she approached, a warm smile spreading across his face—but Lena couldn’t shake the sting of his morning text. “Hey,” she said, voice tighter than she intended. “Hey! Sorry about this morning,” he said quickly. “Work got crazy. You know how it is.” “I know,” she replied curtly, taking a seat. Ethan noticed her tone and paused. “Lena… is something wrong?” She hesitated, trying to measure her feelings. “I don’t know. I guess… I just thought maybe you didn’t want to see me.” Ethan’s eyes softened. “No! Never. I was looking forward to it. Honestly, I was frustrated that work got in the way. I didn’t mean to make you feel ignored.” The honesty in his voice softened her frustration. She took a deep breath. “I guess… I let my mind run ahead of me.” He reached across the table, gently brushing her hand with his. “It’s okay,” he said. “We’re human. We overthink. But I want you to know… I like being with you. Even in silence, even on busy days.” Lena’s heart eased, the tight knot of worry loosening. “I like being with you too,” she admitted softly. They smiled, a quiet understanding settling between them. Small misunderstandings wouldn’t be the end; they were just another part of learning to trust. And Lena realized that maybe love wasn’t about never doubting—it was about choosing to believe anyway. As the evening sun filtered through the café windows, they sat closer, letting their hands touch lightly, savoring the comfort of shared presence.
