Chapter Ten — The First Test
The city was alive with the buzz of evening traffic, but Lena felt a tension in her chest she couldn’t shake. She had spent the day replaying a brief conversation she’d overheard at work—someone mentioned seeing Ethan with a woman she didn’t recognize. Her mind, stubborn and overactive, immediately jumped to conclusions.
By the time she reached the café, her heart was a mix of worry and frustration. Ethan was already there, seated at their usual table, looking up with a warm smile. But Lena’s steps faltered.
“Hey,” he said softly.
“Hey,” she replied, her voice tighter than she intended.
Ethan noticed immediately. “Lena… what’s wrong?”
She hesitated, debating whether to voice her fears. “I… I saw someone today… someone with you. I don’t know who she was.”
Ethan blinked, surprised. “Oh… that must have been Julia,” he said gently. “She’s a colleague. We were just talking about a work project. That’s all.”
Lena’s chest loosened slightly, though a flicker of embarrassment crept in. “I… I guess I let my imagination run away with me,” she admitted, lowering her gaze.
Ethan reached across the table, his hand brushing hers. “Lena, I get it. Jealousy, insecurity… it happens. But I want you to trust me. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
She looked up, meeting his earnest gaze. “I do trust you,” she said softly, “I just… I need to remind myself sometimes.”
He squeezed her hand gently. “Then remind yourself. And I’ll be here.”
The moment of tension passed, replaced by a quiet understanding. Lena realized that love wasn’t just about sparks and smiles—it was about patience, reassurance, and facing insecurities together.
As they left the café, walking side by side under the glow of streetlights, Lena felt the bond between them deepen. Their trust had been tested, and it had held. And for the first time, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, this slow-burn romance could weather the challenges yet to come.
