The mansion was quiet when Juliana woke the next morning, the first rays of sunlight streaming through the thick curtains. Her body ached from exhaustion, but her mind was restless, memories of the past days swirling like a storm. She wasn’t the same person she had been a week ago.
Steeling herself, she pushed out of bed and decided to explore the estate. The grandeur of Jared’s home was overwhelming—marble floors, intricate woodwork, and paintings that seemed older than the house itself. Each room told a story, and Juliana couldn’t help but wonder how many secrets were hidden within these walls.
As she wandered into the library, Jared was already there, seated in a leather chair by the fireplace. His eyes lifted as she entered, a flicker of warmth in his gaze.
“Morning,” he said, his voice deep and gravelly. “Couldn’t sleep again?”
She nodded, sitting across from him. “This place is so… vast. It’s like a different world.”
“It is,” he agreed. “But you’re part of it now.”
Juliana hesitated, her fingers brushing the edge of the table. “What does that even mean? You keep saying I’m your mate, but I don’t feel any different. Shouldn’t I feel… something?”
Jared leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “The bond is there, Juliana. You’ve felt it, even if you don’t realize it. It’s why you didn’t run when the rogues attacked. It’s why you trust me, even though your mind tells you not to.”
She swallowed hard, his words cutting too close to the truth. “And what about you? What does the bond feel like for you?”
His gaze softened. “It’s like knowing the other half of my soul is finally within reach. It’s overwhelming and consuming. But it’s also the most certain thing I’ve ever felt.”
Juliana looked away, unsure how to respond. Before she could find the words, Jared stood and extended his hand.
“Come with me,” he said.
He led her outside to a secluded clearing surrounded by towering pines. The morning air was crisp, and the ground was damp with dew.
“Why are we here?” she asked, shivering slightly.
“To show you what you’re capable of,” Jared replied.
“Capable of?” she echoed, skeptical.
Jared’s lips twitched into a small smile. “You survived a rogue attack without training, without knowing what you are. That’s not luck, Juliana. That’s instinct.”
Her brow furrowed. “I’m not a wolf, Jared. I don’t have your strength or your speed. I’m just... me.”
“Not for long,” he said, his tone both teasing and serious. “The bond doesn’t just connect us emotionally. Over time, it awakens the dormant part of you—the part tied to me and my pack.”
Her pulse quickened. “So, what? I’m going to turn into a werewolf now?”
“Not exactly,” he said. “But you’ll feel the bond physically. Your senses will sharpen, and your reflexes will heighten. It’s part of who you are now.”
Jared stepped closer, his presence grounding her. “I want you to trust yourself, Juliana. And trust me. We’re in this together.”
He held out a wooden staff. “Let’s start simple.”
She stared at it, hesitant. “You want me to fight you?”
“I want you to fight for yourself,” he said. “The rogues won’t stop, and I need to know you can protect yourself if I’m not there.”
Something in his words lit a spark in her, a determination she hadn’t realized was buried within her. She took the staff, gripping it tightly.
At first, it was awkward. Juliana struggled to find her footing, her movements clumsy and hesitant. Jared was patient, his instructions calm and precise.
“Focus on your center,” he said. “Your strength comes from there.”
She tried again, her swings gaining momentum. Sweat trickled down her brow, but she didn’t stop. Each movement felt a little more natural, a little more purposeful.
Jared watched her closely, a glint of pride in his eyes. “Good. Now, faster.”
She moved quicker, her muscles burning with effort. Jared blocked her strikes effortlessly, his movements fluid and controlled.
“Don’t hold back,” he urged. “You’re stronger than you think.”
With a growl of frustration, she swung harder, surprising both herself and Jared when the staff connected with his side. He stumbled slightly, a grin breaking across his face.
“That’s it,” he said. “Now you’re getting it.”
Juliana couldn’t help but smile, a flicker of pride warming her chest. For the first time, she felt like she was beginning to understand the strength Jared saw in her.
As they finished the session, the sound of a branch snapping echoed through the clearing. Jared’s demeanor shifted instantly, his body tense and his eyes scanning the woods.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered, his voice low and commanding.
Before Juliana could respond, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a man, his appearance disheveled and his eyes glowing faintly.
“Alpha Whitewall,” the man said, his tone mocking. “I didn’t think I’d find you here.”
Jared stepped forward, his posture protective. “What do you want?”
The rogue smirked, his gaze flickering to Juliana. “Her.”
Juliana’s heart raced, but she refused to cower. She stepped closer to Jared, her chin raised defiantly.
“You can’t have her,” Jared growled, his voice dripping with menace.
The rogue’s smirk widened. “We’ll see about that.”
Before Jared could react, the rogue disappeared into the shadows, his laughter echoing through the trees.
Jared turned to Juliana, his expression grim. “We need to get back to the mansion. Now.”
As they hurried back, Juliana couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much darker.
