Chapter 26 A Cat in a Corner Jeff Baker was panning gold in the little waterfall when the charge blew. The mountain made noises all the time but they were more like groaning or whining noises. Now and then he could hear what sounded like a falling rock, but this was different. It came without a warning. It was also too distant to be heard if it hadn’t been so loud. It sounded like somewhere deep in the mountain the ceiling had fallen. The sound of the little stream almost drowned it out. If he had not been standing at the time he might not have heard it at all. He stood and listened for a little while and decided something must have happened in one of the caves that joined the area he had marked. It was a long walk, but he knew his way and the more he thought about it the more he wanted
