He gave her a ring. She gave him her freedom.

Chapter1:Just Business
Ava Sinclair had learned how to disappear. Not physically—she was always present, punctual, pressed, polished. But emotionally? She’d perfected the art of staying invisible. That’s what working for Damien Blackstone taught her: blend in, don’t overstep, and never forget your place. He liked silence. Order. Control. Which made today strange. Because something was off. She stood at the espresso machine in the executive kitchen, her hands steady even though her mind wasn’t. The office was unusually quiet for a Wednesday morning. Too quiet. And Damien hadn’t barked out a single instruction since she walked in. Her phone buzzed. One line. No greeting. Come in. Now. — D. Ava exhaled sharply, grabbed her tablet, and walked the short distance to his corner office. She didn’t knock. She never had to. He expected her like clockwork. He stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Manhattan skyline as if it owed him something. His suit was dark, pressed, like always. His jaw, sharp and tense. A glass of water sat untouched on the desk. “Good morning, Mr. Blackstone,” she said evenly. He didn’t look at her. “Close the door.” She did. Click. A long pause. Then, “My engagement ended last night.” Ava blinked. Damien Blackstone didn’t offer personal updates. He barely acknowledged birthdays. And now he was sharing heartbreak? “Okay,” she said slowly. “I assume the press is already on it?” “They are. But that’s not the problem.” He finally turned. His gaze met hers—cool, unreadable. “The Sterling merger hinges on image. They want a man who represents stability. Family. A man who looks settled.” She nodded, following. “Without a fiancée, the deal’s at risk.” “Yes.” Ava waited. He didn’t speak. “I can prep a PR spin,” she offered. “We’ll emphasize your commitment to the company—” “No.” Another pause. The air shifted. He walked toward her, slow and deliberate, until he was just close enough to make her nerves rise, but not close enough to back away without looking weak. “I don’t want spin,” he said. “I want a solution.” Ava raised an eyebrow. “And what exactly do you think I can do about your broken engagement?” His voice dropped low. “Marry me.” The room spun for a second. She laughed—not because it was funny, but because it was unreal. “I’m sorry. What?” “You and me. One year. Marriage in name only. It secures the merger. You get a compensation package that most people would kill for. And we walk away clean after twelve months.” She stared at him. Waiting for a punchline that never came. “You’re serious.” “I don’t joke, Ava.” Her heart thudded in her chest, a dull, slow panic that climbed with every second. “You want to fake a marriage. With me.” “You’re the only person I trust to handle the spotlight. You already know my schedule, my world. You don’t ask questions. You don’t need attention. You’re perfect.” She blinked again. “Perfect for pretending to be your wife.” He nodded once. “This is insane.” “It’s strategic.” Ava turned, pacing for the first time in three years inside his office. “Do you realize how illegal that sounds?” “It’s not. Our lawyers will make it bulletproof.” “And what happens if I say no?” “Then I’ll respect your decision,” he said smoothly. “And I’ll be forced to bring someone else into your world. Into your job. Into this office. Into my personal space.” There it was. The unspoken threat, cloaked in civility. She stared at him, speechless. Damien didn’t do chaos. He didn’t do desperation. But she saw it now—tightly controlled, sitting in his eyes like a storm he couldn’t afford to unleash. He needed this. And for some reason… he wanted her. “I’ll give you time to think,” he said. “Not long. The wedding would be this weekend.” “Jesus,” she muttered. “You’ll be compensated more than fairly. A number with enough zeroes to make the rest of your life… easier.” Ava met his gaze, defiant. “I don’t want your money.” “Then take your freedom,” he said softly. “One year with me, and you’ll never have to work again.” His voice was quiet now. Dangerous. Her mouth went dry. And for the first time since she walked into Blackstone International, she didn’t feel like a secretary. She felt like a pawn. But even pawns could change the board.
