There was a village named Takht Hazara on the banks of Chenab river in Pakistan.Manju Chaudhary was the main landowner of the village. He had four sons and Ranjha was the youngest among those four brothers. Ranjha's real name was Shido and his nickname was Ranjha, hence everyone called him Ranjha. Ranjha, being the youngest among the four brothers, was very fond of his father. Ranjha's other brothers used to work hard in farming and Ranjha used to play the flute. Due to which his brothers hated Ranjha.Ranjha was in love with beauty since childhood. He had created a picture of a beautiful woman for himself in his dreams. Ranjha was very romantic. At the age of twelve, his father's influence was removed from his mind and there was a dispute with his brothers. Separated from his brothers, he used to sit under the trees the whole day and think about the princess of his dreams. Once a peer asked him, Why are you so sad? Then Ranjha played the love song composed by him to the peer, in which there was mention of the princess of dreams. Peer told that the princess of your dreams can be none other than Heer. Hearing this, Ranjha set out in search of his Heer.One night Ranjha took shelter in a mosque, the next morning he left the mosque and reached another village which was Heer's village. Heer belonged to a prosperous Jat family of Sial tribe, this place is now in Punjab, Pakistan. As soon as he saw Heer for the first time, Ranjha understood that she was the princess of his dreams. Heer was a very tough minded girl. One night Ranjha slept secretly in Heer's boat. Seeing this, Heer became furious, but as soon as she saw the young man Ranjha, she forgot her anger and kept looking at Ranjha. Then Ranjha told him about his dreams. Infatuated with Ranjhe, Heer took him to her home and got him employed.Heer's father handed over the job of grazing cattle to Ranjha. Heer was mesmerized by the sound of Ranjha's flute and gradually Heer fell deeply in love with Ranjha. They kept meeting at secret places for many years, but Heer's uncle got wind of it and told the whole thing to Heer's father Chuchak and mother Malki.Now Heer's family fired Ranjha from his job and forbade both of them from meeting each other. Heer is forced by her father to marry a man named Saida Khera. Under pressure from the clerics and her family, he married Saida Khara. When Ranjha came to know about this, he was heartbroken. He kept wandering from door to door alone in the rural areas. One day he met a Jogi Gorakhnath, Gorakhnath was from “Kanhaiya” community of Jogi sect and under his guidance Ranjha also became a Jogi.Reciting the name of God, he wandered throughout Punjab and finally found Heer's village where she lived. He went to the house of Heer's husband Saida and knocked on her door. Hearing his voice, Heer came out and started giving him alms. Both kept looking at each other. Ranjha would come daily disguised as a fakir and Heer would come to give him alms. Both started meeting daily. Heer's sister-in-law saw this. When he interrupted Heer, Ranjha went out of the village. Everyone started worshiping him considering him as a fakir. During his separation, Heer fell ill. When he could not be cured by medical doctors, Heer's father-in-law went to Ranjhe and asked for his help. Ranjha came to Heer's house. He placed his hand on Heer's head and Heer regained consciousness.When people came to know that he was Fakir Ranjha, they beat Ranjha and pushed him out of the village. Then the king considered him a thief and caught him. When Ranjha told the king the truth and put his hand on the fire to test his love, he ordered Heer's father to marry Heer to Ranjha. Fearing the king's orders, his father gave his approval, but on the day of the wedding, Heer's uncle Kaido mixed poison in Heer's food so that the marriage could be stopped. As soon as Ranjha got this information, he came running to Heer but it was too late.Heer had eaten food that was laced with poison and he died. Ranjha could not bear the grief of his love's death and he also ate the poisoned food and almost died. Heer-Ranjha was buried in his native village Jhang. Where the shrine of love still remains. Even though Heer died, Ranjha died, but their love is still alive.
