THE BELL THAT SHOULD NEVER RING
The Temple of Eternity had stood longer than the oldest kingdoms, its towering spires piercing the clouds as though they had been carved to touch the heavens themselves.
Nestled atop Mount Vaelor, the temple was hidden behind a veil of enchanted mist that no ordinary traveler could cross. Legends claimed the gods themselves had chosen the mountain as the resting place of the world's greatest secret, a secret so dangerous that generations of Keepers had sworn to protect it with their lives. For nearly a thousand years, that oath had never been broken.
On the evening everything changed, the sky above the mountain was unusually still.
Dark clouds gathered in silence, swallowing the last traces of sunset. A cold wind drifted through the ancient courtyards, rustling the silver leaves of the sacred moon trees. The birds that normally nested among their branches abandoned them all at once, disappearing into the dark horizon as if fleeing from an unseen predator.
Inside the temple's vast library, Elara Ashbourne balanced a stack of weathered books against her chest while making her way between towering shelves that stretched almost to the ceiling. She had spent the last six years organizing forgotten manuscripts, repairing damaged scrolls, and memorizing histories that few people in the kingdom even knew existed. To the other apprentices, the library was little more than a place of endless chores. To Elara, it had always felt like home.
She paused before a shelf marked with faded golden symbols and carefully returned the final book to its place. A satisfied smile crossed her face as she brushed the dust from her hands. Master Aldren often said that knowledge deserved respect, no matter how old or forgotten it became. It was advice she had taken to heart ever since arriving at the temple as a frightened orphan.
The silence surrounding her was comforting, broken only by the faint crackle of candle flames and the occasional rustle of turning pages from scholars studying in distant corners of the library. It was the kind of peaceful evening she had come to expect within the temple's ancient walls.
Then the bell rang.
The sound exploded through the mountain with a force that stole the air from her lungs.
It was not loud in the ordinary sense. Instead, it carried a strange weight, a deep vibration that seemed to echo inside every stone, every pillar, and every heartbeat. The shelves trembled violently. Several books slipped free and crashed onto the marble floor while clouds of dust drifted into the air.
Elara instinctively steadied herself against a nearby table, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had never heard that bell before.
All around her, the scholars stopped reading. A quill slipped from an elderly scribe's hand and rolled across the floor. Two apprentices exchanged frightened glances without speaking, while one of the senior Keepers slowly rose from his chair, his face drained of every trace of color.
"What... was that?" one apprentice whispered.
No one answered.
The silence that followed felt heavier than the bell itself.
Moments later, hurried footsteps echoed through the corridor. Master Aldren entered the library with unusual urgency, his silver robes sweeping across the polished floor. Although age had bent his shoulders and streaked his beard with white, his eyes remained sharp. Tonight, however, even those steady eyes held something Elara had never seen before.
Fear.
"Everyone," he commanded, his voice carrying across the chamber. "Leave the library immediately. Return to the Hall of Prayer and remain there until instructed otherwise."
Confused murmurs spread through the room.
One of the scholars stepped forward. "Master Aldren, surely this is unnecessary. The Bell of Souls has been silent for centuries."
Aldren's expression hardened.
"Exactly."
No one questioned him again.
As the apprentices hurried toward the exit, Elara bent to collect one of the fallen books lying near her feet. Its leather cover had split open during the fall, revealing a yellowed page filled with strange illustrations. Before she could close it, something caught her attention.
A symbol.
It looked like a circle surrounded by seven stars, with an eye drawn at its center.
The symbol shimmered faintly.
Then it disappeared.
Elara frowned and rubbed her eyes, convinced the candlelight had played a trick on her. Yet a strange feeling lingered in the pit of her stomach, one she could not explain.
As she hurried after the others, another sound reached her ears.
Not the bell.
A whisper.
Soft.
Distant.
Almost impossible to hear.
"Elara..."
She stopped walking.
Her name.
Someone had called her name.
She turned slowly, expecting to find another apprentice lingering behind, but the library stood completely empty. The endless rows of shelves disappeared into darkness, and every candle burned with an unnatural blue flame.
The whisper came again.
"Find me..."
A chill crawled down her spine.
She took a hesitant step backward, intending to leave, but her feet refused to move. Instead, her gaze drifted toward a narrow stone corridor at the far end of the library—a passage she had walked past hundreds of times without ever noticing.
Tonight, a faint golden light seeped from beneath its ancient door.
She stared in disbelief.
That door had always been sealed.
Every apprentice knew the story. Beyond it lay the Forbidden Archive, a place no one was permitted to enter. Master Aldren had once warned them that some knowledge was too dangerous to be uncovered, even by those sworn to protect it.
Yet now, the heavy iron door stood slightly open.
The whisper grew stronger.
"Come to me..."
Elara's heart pounded as reason battled curiosity. Every lesson she had ever learned told her to turn around and obey the Master's orders. But something deeper, older, and impossible to resist pulled her toward the glowing doorway.
Without realizing it, she took her first step into the forbidden corridor.
Behind her, somewhere deep beneath the mountain, something ancient stirred in its endless sleep.
