Prelude : Metamorphosis
My name is Erin. I'm an only child. My parents, as the story that was told to me goes, are migrants from another country who took their chance at life. This is because the country where we are from has fought a long time war with another neighboring country. The country who attacked ours was a filthy rich, selfishly an ambitious one too. I have just been with my parents just for 2 years. The nuns in the orphanage where I spent most of my childhood told me that due to the gruesome war that we had been to, although we have successfully left our country due to the bad impacts of war, both my parents became really sick and after a year my dad Augusto, who was a hardworking mechanic died.
Soon, after that, after a few months, my mom Matilde who used to wash the clothes of the people who can't do the washing by themselves died too. Good thing that there was a passerby our house that time who saw me forcibly trying to wake up my mom, asking her to feed me, thinking that she's only sleeping. Yes, that same person our neighbor, Mang Simon as we call him was the brave soul who took chances of even being barefooted, took me to the orphanage on the 5th town from our place.
" Sorry, Erin. But I am also as poor as a rat. I can't provide for you. But don't worry, I will take you to a place where all your needs will be taken cared of. " he apologetically told me, as if he was talking to a grown up child.
I was only 2 years old back then. Too young to be an orphan. But up to this day, I still can't thank him enough.
Today, is an ordinary weekday. It's a Wednesday. Thank God it is already the midweek. Phew!!! What a relief indeed. But grrrr!!! Wait! It is a Wednesday! O shoot!!! I'll be late for work again! I grimaced at myself and pushed myself to get out of bed. I silently scolded myself, while looking at the mirror brushing my teeth.' You can do it Erin. It is already the midweek after all."
'Geez, it seems like I will need to buy a new alarm clock for the nth time.' I gasped, thinking silently to myself. I will be called out by my boss, Mr. YoungHusband again. This is my third consecutive late for this week, not to mention I've also been late during several occasions last week and the month prior. 'What are you really up to Erin?" I pinched myself. Nanay Rebecca and Tatay Rodolfo ( as what she used to call her foster parents ) are also gone from this face of the earth.
I'm now am racing back to the old memories ( deja vu ) where I had my first cognitive years as a child. Oh, my bittersweet childhood memories. I can say that those were really the days my friend. But if not for those experiences, of course, I will not be what I am today. They say that, 'Experience is the BEST teacher.'
I can really attest to that. What a journey it has been indeed. But I know that my story is far from being over. Infact, it has only just began. She let out a seemingly gasp from someone who is almost running out of breath.
