Harper POV
...........................................
Sitting in a vacant seat I let out a sigh. I was already bored and class hadn’t even started. I placed my head on the desk and closed my eyes. People were starting to fill up the class room now but I didn’t bother lifting my head. Not like I’ve got anyone to talk to anyway, considering Lucas had maths first while I was stuck in English.
I felt someone tap me on the shoulder and I was going to tell them to f off but I knew better then to actually do it. Raising my head I saw a girl sit down next to me and smile at me. I gave her one back and put my head back on the desk.
“Are you new?” The girl asked, not getting that I was in no mood to talk.
I sighed and sat up straight. “Yeah,” I said nodding.
Her smile brightened and she stuck her hand out. I looked at it and then at her in general. She was pretty. Her hair was dyed grey with blue tips that complimented her pale skin nicely. “I’m Lorilie,” she said once I took her hand.
“Harper,” I said.
“And that one with the purple hair is Sasha,” she continued gesturing to a girl next to her. Then she pointed behind us at a girl with silver hair. “That’s Nalani and that one there,” she nodded to a thin boy with washed out pink hair, “He’s Wade.”
I nodded and forced myself to smile at them. I’m not really a people person. Wade leaned forward in his chair and stretched over his desk. “I love your hair!”
I laughed and smiled a genuine smile. “Thanks.”
Nalani leaned forward as well. “So why’d you move?”
My smile faulted for a moment and I sunk deeper in my seat. “Uh my dad wanted to come back to his home town,” I said weakly. It wasn’t a lie, just not the main reason. But I don’t even know these people so its not like I’m going to spill my life story to them.
“You should totally hang with us at lunch, I’m sure we’ll be the best of friends!” Lorilie smiled and bounced in her seat.
I was taken aback by her sudden burst of energy. I looked at her for a moment then shook my head and smiled back. “Sure, if you’ll have me that is,” I said looking at the others.
Both Nalani and Wade nodded and agreed where as Sasha just stayed silent as she took a sip of coffee. She’s quiet. Now that I think about it she hasn’t said a word since I entered this conversation.
Lorilie’s smile faded a bit as she looked at me blankly. Uh what’s going on? The way she was looking at me made me feel uncomfortable. “You look really familiar,” she said looking me in the eye. Ah she’s thinking, I think. “Did you go to the office this morning?” she asked.
“Ah, yeah I did,” I looked at her confused.
“Did you have a guy with you?” she asked.
I nodded again. “Yeah, my brother,” I answered.
“Oh. My. God,” Nalani said covering her mouth. Okay, they are now officially confusing me.
“You were the girl that was standing up to Callen,” Lorilie said snapping out of whatever daze she was just in.
“Who?”
“Callen Hyde,” she said simply.
“Oh him, yeah that was me. What about it?” I asked not sure what was going on.
“Oh honey, it’s been nice knowing you,” Nalani said sympathy in every word she spoke. I looked at her weirdly. What, am I dying?
Wade noticed my confusion. “You don’t know?” he asked shock clear in his voice.
“Know what?” I asked getting a little scared.
“No one talks back to him,” he said softly. “well not unless you want to wind up dead,” he finished.
I let out a laugh and shrugged my shoulders. “I’m not afraid of him, its not like he can actually do anything,” I told them.
Sasha laughed. “Then your stupid,” she said bitterly. “He’s a bloody gang leader sweetheart. He runs the east side of town. He kills people!” she said in a duh tone.
That got my attention.
“But, but another guy stood up to him as well, so he cant be that dangerous,” I tried to reason.
“Yeah Alex Corley,” Wade said. “They’ve been rivals for years. Kinda comes with the gang territory,” he shrugged his shoulders.
“He’s in a gang too?” I asked with a sinking feeling in my stomach.
“Leader of the west gang,” he said simply.
I gulped. “T-then I just, I’ll avoid them. In a couple days they wont even remember me right?” I said trying to convince myself more than anything.
“I don’t think so,” wade said sighing. “I mean I definitely wouldn’t forget you, especially if did something like that,” he said playing with his hair.
Great. Just great. First I almost get run over, then I find out I’m probably going to die anyway. I should have just stayed in bed.
I sat there in deep thought until class started.
…..
“The watch represents...” The teacher, Mr Hodge droned on about the book as I let out a yawn. I don’t think anyone was really paying attention anymore. I mean the guy in front of me was practically snoring. Looking to the side Lorilie and Sasha were talking quietly. As if sensing my gaze Lorilie looked over at me and smiled. I smiled back, yawning again.
The door flung open stopping Mr Hodge mid sentence. Everyone’s head snapped towards the door, even the boy in front of me jumped in surprise as Callen walked in. Looking at the door I shrank back in my seat, I’m dead.
He swaggered in like he owned the place, looking intimidating in his leather jacket. I thought the teacher was going to yell at him but no instead he seemed to shrink back as well as if he were trying to blend into the white board behind him. Callen’s eyes scanned the room looking for a seat, I hoped. When his eyes landed on me he smirked. I gulped, please don’t come over here, please don’t come over here. I thought holding my breath.
I should know by now however that nothing goes my way.
He started walking over. I looked around to see everyone averting their gaze, yet there were no empty seats. So he cant sit with us. Ha mean girls jokes! Callen stopped in front of Lorilie’s seat, making her stiffen. He jutted his head indicating for her to move.
Lorilie looked at me then back at him, then at me again. Gulping she picked up her books and looked at me sympathetically before walking to the other side of the room. Callen goes ahead and sits in the seat without a second thought. Now it was my turn to gulp.
“Did you have to do that?” I asked as I looked down at the desk.
He let out a chuckle. “I can do what I want darling,” he said as I looked up at him.
“Yes but why did you have to?” I asked crossing my arms. “There are like five empty seats.”
The class seemed to be holding there breath. Well this isn’t going to get old fast, like get over it guys. Callen raised an eyebrow and rested an arm on the back of his chair, turning to face me more. “I wanted to,” he said shrugging his shoulders.
“Hi Callen,” Sasha interrupted batting her eyelashes. Callen ignored her making her frown and glare at me. what’s her problem?
I rolled my eyes at him, not paying attention to Sasha. “Wow, what an original answer,” I said sighing.
Wade sucked in a breath from behind me. I ignored him as Callen leaned closer to me. “You’ve got quite an attitude on you, darling.”
“My name isn’t, Darling,” I growled.
I was getting quite annoyed with the pet name and it hadn’t even been a day.
“Then what is your name, Darling?” he asked inching closer to me, his breath tickling my lips.
Before he could move any closer I turned back to the front of the class. “I think, we should get on with the class,” I said looking pleadingly at Mr Hodge.
Mr Hodge shifted from one foot to the other, looking scared. “I-I uh,” he said in a pathetic attempt to talk.
“And I think you and I should have a little walk,” Callen said grabbing my arm.
He started to drag me out of the classroom as I thrashed around. “This can’t be legal,” I yelled hoping the teacher would actually do something.
He didn’t. Yay! Note my sarcasm.
What the hell is going on? How can they just let this happen? This definitely isn’t legal.
When Callen had me out of the class, he turned around and looked at me up and down. I cringed and walked passed him. At least I’m out of class. Walking down the corridor I ignored him as he called out to me. Unfortunately for me he caught up and grabbed my hand.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked as he pulled on my arm making me practically fall into him.
I huffed and pulled my arm free. “Anywhere you’re not.”
he let out a laugh and grabbed my hand again, this time walking forward. “Well that’s to bad darling.”
I let him drag me out of the school building and into the grounds. I couldn’t be bothered fighting him this time. We walked in silence for a moment before he stopped and pushed me against a tree.
“Now what am I going to do with you?” he asked, more to himself then me. Looking me in my eyes, it was as if he was searching for something.
I looked back at him and frowned. “Let me go?” I said hopefully.
He let out another laugh and put his arms on either side of me. I gulped. He watched me for a moment and smirked. “And why would I do that?” he leaned in and looked down for a second. His eyes flitted to my lips and then up to my eyes once more. “Why,” he paused, looking down at my lips again. “Would I let such a pretty thing like you slip through my fingers?” he asked as some hair fell into his eye.
Something tells me I am in more trouble then id like to admit.
I rolled my eyes at him and ducked under his arm moving away from the tree. Callen sighed and followed me again as I walked around a corner. Grabbing my hand he trudged passed a group of people, dragging me along with him, and dug in his pocket for something. He pulled out a cigarette and placed it between his lips.
Cringing away from him I held my breath. He looked at me from the corner of his eye and frowned. He does that a lot. “What is it, darling?”
“You know, I wish you would stop calling me that,” I said ignoring his question.
His frown deepened. “Well then you should tell me your name.”
“You know what? Darling is fine,” I said pulling my hand free for like the hundredth time today.
“Why won’t you tell me your name?” he asked as we sat down on a table. He pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and moved it around in his hand.
“Because it’s none of your business,” I said simply as I stretched out my legs.
“Who was that you were walking with this morning?” he asked leaning back against the table.
“Also none of your business,” I said shrugging my shoulders.
He huffed. “You’re getting on my nerves darling,” he said crossing his arms. “You know a few of my mates, they’re in maths right now. I could always get them to-”
“Harper, my name is Harper,” I cut him off sitting up straight. “Just leave him alone.”
He smiled and turned to face me. “Well, Harper,” he paused as if testing my name out. “Who were you walking with?” he asked again. I ignored him and looked down at my feet. He slid his arm along the table behind me mindlessly. “Why did you cringe away from me before?” he asked changing the topic once he realised I wasn’t going to answer him.
I looked up at him and shrugged. “You’re a smoker.”
he arched an eyebrow at me. “Most girls find it sexy you know,” he chuckled.
“Well then I’m not most girls am I?” I said looking around.
“No I don’t think you are,” he said putting the cigarette back in his pocket. He then placed his hand on my knee. I looked down at it for a moment before looking back at him. He had a smirk on his face now. “Harper, what gave you the idea that you could talk back to me?” he asked, his hand inching higher.
I gulped and shrugged. “I’m new, I didn’t think it’d be a problem,” I said looking down at his hand again. I moved my knee a little and I swear I heard him mutter something about being a topical girl.
I frowned and looked back up at him again. “Lets be honest, darling,” he purred seductively like he had earlier that morning. “You talked back, because you wanted me to notice you.”
“I really didn’t,” I sighed.
“You don’t have to lie anymore darling,” his hand moved higher. “You definitely have my attention.”
I looked at him confused for a moment before it clicked. He’s testing me. Well two can play this game. Taking a deep breath I looked down at my lap, then up at his face, but this time through my eyelashes. “Yes,” I said softly.
His smile widened and his hand moved dangerously higher. I had to suppress the urge to slap him then and there. “I knew it,” he breathed leaning close.
It was working.
I stood up grabbing his hand that was on my thigh and pulled him to his feet as well. I looked down as I fidgeted with his hand and breathed deeply again. Looking at him I bit my lip, his eyes followed my movements. And that’s when I knew I had him where I wanted him. I leaned closer to him and whispered, “I, uh,” I paused as if I didn't know what to say.
He looked at me and smiled. “Go on,” he urged.
I looked down at the ground and bit my lip again. I gestured for him to come closer. When he was eye level with me I grabbed his shoulders as if steadying myself. Leaning close to his ear I whispered, “Keep your grimy hands to yourself,” and kicked him in the family jewels.
“You b***h,” he groaned out as he clutched between his legs. I look at him for a moment and I swear I saw tears in his eyes. Ha! Serves him right.
Callen staggered forward slightly and winced. “You’re,”he paused as he took a deep breath. “You’re going to regret that darling,” he said as he straightened up.
He took a step towards me and it was now my turn to straighten up. Oh s**t. He took another step, still wincing as he moved. Oh s**t, oh s**t. I looked around hopelessly for someone or something to get me out of trouble.
Nothing, great.
Looking back at Callen I smiled weakly. “You know,” I drifted off as he continued forward. “I’m just gonna go,” I finished, pointing over my shoulder and I ran.
I ran as fast as I could and jumped over fallen sticks and branches, not even checking if he was behind me. I was so focused on saving my life I didn’t notice the brick wall I ran into. Or more precisely, the guy.
The impact sent me falling backwards, but then the guy grabbed me around the waist. And before I knew what was happening I was pressed against his chest in a tight hold. “Watch where you’re going,” he said.
I looked up and cursed my luck. The guy from this morning Coley or what ever Wade called him, was holding me. I blushed slightly and wiggled in his arms. Understanding what I wanted he let me go and stood me back on my feet.
“What were you running from?” he asked looking over my shoulder.
“I, uh,” I paused because how do you explain Callen Hyde. “That’s for me to know and you to, well what’s the word, not.”
One of his friends that was standing around us laughed but stopped as soon as what’s his face sent him a glare. I looked at his friends and smiled slightly. They were the same people that had been with him this morning. One of the girls smiled back at me.
“Well, uh, I’m sorry for running into you,” I apologised looking over his shoulder. “Uh, I’ll just leave to to whatever it is you were doing,” I said turning to leave.
He caught my arm and smiled down at me. “Wait. Stay, just for a little?” he asked a smile plastered across his face. I nodded, how am I meant to say no to a gang leader?
Oh wait easy, ‘No.’
His smile brightened and he gestured for me to sit. Moving back I sat next to a boy that had black hair and brown eyes. He looked familiar but I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
“I’m Alex,” what’s his face said getting my attention back on him. I nodded not saying anything and he continued. “He’s Ayden,” he pointed at a guy with brown hair and glasses. “Walker, Oakley and Trace,” he gestured to a red head, the guy next to me and a blonde with grey eyes in turn. “That’s Rayana,” he nodded to a dark skinned girl, who was leaning against the wall.
“I’m Nataly!” The other girl said smiling. She had dyed red hair and blue eyes.
Seriously why are they all so good looking? It’s honestly scary.
“And you are,” Alex urged.
“Harper,” I said looking down at my hands.
“Well Harper,” Alex said as he got to his feet. I looked up at him and he smiled. “We were about to go get lunch when you ran into us,” he said. Yeah literally. I nodded and got to my feet as well. “Would you like to come with?” He asked.
“Not that she’s really got a choice,” Trace said to Oakley quietly. They both laughed.
“Yes come, it’ll be so fun,” Nataly said cheerfully, interrupting the two of them, as she grabbed my arm.
I laughed slightly at her and smiled. “But it isn’t even ten.”
“Fine we’ll call it brunch, is that better?” Alex asked smiling and shaking his head.
I smiled back. I didn’t want to be at school in the first place. Maybe I don’t have such bad luck after all. All though I have gained the attention of not one but two gang leaders in the span of an hour so I wouldn’t be so sure. “Sure, why not,” I said.
“Yay!” Nataly said as she looped her arm with mine.
