Chapter One
Harper POV ............................................... “And then, and then Jess grabs the fork and threw it right at his head,” my mum finished her story letting out a high laugh, her pail blonde hair flying out of her messy bun as she moved around. My brother, Lucas, let out a small laugh as well, having been engrossed in it the whole time. My father looked over his newspaper and said, “I wasn’t happy about it, I still have the mark. See,” he lifted up is hair to show us. I groaned getting up from my seat and made myself a cup of coffee. How can anyone be so happy this early in the morning? Taking a sip of coffee I let out a sigh and walked back to the table and sat down. I moved my bacon around my plate not feeling hungry. My father put the paper down and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “Have I ever told you about the time when me and a few mates rode up the steps of the high school on our motorbikes?” “No way,” Lucas said in disbelief. “Oh yes, I got in a lot of trouble when I was your age,” he said proudly picking up his coffee. My mum sighed and clicked her tongue at my father. “You didn’t get into trouble, you created the trouble,” she said before looking at the time. “Right you two better get a move on or you’re gonna be late.” “Yeah, wouldn’t want to be late on your first day would ya?” My father said sticking his tongue out at me as I groaned and stood up. “Can I just drop out,” I asked annoyed and took another sip of coffee. Mum let out a horrified gasp. “You will do no such thing,” she crossed her arms. My father let out a chuckle and put a hand on her shoulder. “She was just joking love, weren’t ya?” he said giving me a sharp look. I rolled my eyes and sighed. “Yes father.” Mum nodded standing up, “You ready for school?” “Yes mum,” I sipped on my coffee again. And I in fact was. I had done my hair in space buns. I had picked out a cute pair of high-wasted blue shorts and a blue, pink and white lined jumper. Kinda matched my hair. I looked cute, screw what everyone else thinks right? She looked me up and down and frowned. “I wish you hadn’t ruined your hair like that,” she sighed. I frowned. “I didn’t ruin my hair,” I said defensively. “Blue and pink aren’t natural colours,” she said frowning back at me. ‘Well that’s not your natural hair either, Alice.’ I bit my tongue in order to not say what I was thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I love my mother wholeheartedly. But she has to pick at everything about me. I crossed my arms and looked down at my white runners. “I like how I look mother.” I heard her sigh in defeat. Ha! That always works. She moved forward and took my face in her hands making me look up at her. I pouted slightly and gave her a my best sad eyes. She brushed a lock of hair from my face and kissed my forehead. “Well, if it makes you happy then that’s all that matters I guess,” she spoke softly. I smiled a big toothy smile and threw my arms around her. She let out a light laugh and hugged me back. “Please tuck the jumper in though, makes you look neat,” she said hopefully and I nodded. Once I had tucked it in the whole way I hugged her again. “I love you mum.” She smiled sweetly and brushed my hair with her fingers. “I love you more dear,” she said stepping back. I walked over to where my father was still sitting and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Bye dad.” “Bye kiddo,” he smiled at me as I straightened up again. I walked over to the door where Lucas was waiting and waved goodbye to my parents. “Have a good first day,” mum said and we turned to leave. “Be careful!” mum yelled after us as we walked out. … Leaning my head back against the headrest I let out a noise. We were sitting in the school car park, Lucas waiting patiently, and me wondering if I could sit here in the warm car for the rest of the day. Sighing I grabbed my bag and looked at my brother. “let’s go,” I said dully. He laughed at me and got out of the car, me following soon after. “Come on, cheer up. We get to spend a lot of time together,” he said mockingly bumping my shoulder. I whined louder. “Eww.” He wasn’t wrong though, we would be spending more time with each other. Lucas and I are ten months apart meaning We are always in the same year level and usually have most of the same classes. Well at least I know at least one person at a whole new school. “Oh shut up,” he said rolling his eyes at me. Smiling at him. I skipped forward and turned to face him. “Lets get this s**t over with,” I said walking backwards as I threw my arms up into the air. A honk of a horn made me jump and let out a startled yell. Looking to my right I saw a very fancy car brake and wait for me to move. I looked down at the ground blushing and hurried to the entrance of the school. That’s just great. My first day and I almost got run over. Frowning at Lucas, who hadn’t stopped laughing yet, I punched him in the arm. “Ow, what was that for?” he asked rubbing his arm. I glared at him. “Lets just find the office shell we?” I said as we walked down one of the corridors. We walked in silence for several minutes, people looking at us the whole time. ‘Yes hello, we are new I know. you don’t have to stare we aren’t circus animals.’ Ignoring the stares we were getting I continued to move down corridor after corridor looking for the office. I was just about to give up when we turned the corner and I saw it. The stupid old sign that read ‘Office’. I smiled and looked at Lucas victoriously. He smiled back at me. “Found it,” he said making me roll my eyes. “But how are we going to get through that?” he asked nodding towards a large crowd that was standing in the middle of the corridor leaving no room to get through. I frowned and let my shoulders sag. How are we gonna get through that? Shaking my head I shrugged. “We’re just gonna have to try,” I said simply. Lucas nodded in agreement, yet there was a hint of hesitation in his eyes. Smiling up at him I started forward again with him close on my heels. As we got closer to the crowd the sound of a male voice became clear. “...how dare you get in my way. You know who I am...” the male voice said angrily. I couldn’t help but have a picture of Draco Melfoy from harry potter saying ‘My father will here about this!’ bubble up in my mind. I covered my mouth to stop a laugh from leaving me. There was something about the voice that made it clear to me that whoever it belonged to shouldn’t be laughed at. I stopped on the edge of the crowd, Lucas almost walking into me because of it. I tried to see over people’s heads to see what was going on. Lucas leaned close to my ear. “What are you doing?” he asked. I shushed him and stood on my tipsy-toes to get a better view. Success! The picture I had of Draco Melfoy in my mind couldn’t have been more different then the guy in front of me. Well there were seven people in the centre of the circle. Six guys and a girl. The girl was leaning against the lockers with her arms crossed, the guy who I believe the voice came from stood dangerously close to the boy that I presume got in his way. The other guys where standing around with bored expressions on their faces. The poor boy looked close to shitting himself. I felt a ping of sympathy for him. Shaking my head I tried to push my way through the crowd with my brother a few steps behind me. As I continued to weave my way through people I got some dirty looks but ignored them. “Get out of here before I send you to the hospital,” the voice threatened and the circle of people split letting the boy through. I turned to face Lucas like I did in the car park and smiled at him. He returned it. “And where do you think your going?” the voice called out. I froze and looked over at the crowd. The guy the voice belonged to had made his way out of the mass of people and was standing there with his arms crossed over his broad chest. His brown eyes seemed to boar into my blue ones. All I’ve got to say about it is…. Damn that boy hot. He had a scowl on his face and he watched each movement I made. It took me a second to realise that the was talking to me. I straightened up and copied his stance. “Ah, I’m going to the office. Is that a problem?” I said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. People in the crowd let out gasps of shock. What its not like I’m the first person to talk back to him. Am I? I rolled my eyes at the crowd. This was so stupid. The boy transferred his weight to the other leg and I copied hiss actions. He looked at me questioningly. I smiled at him and I swear I saw his lips turn upward an infinitesimal amount. His face turned back to stone almost immediately. “Who said you could leave?” he asked raising a dark eyebrow at me, as if daring me to speak. I looked at him and arched an eyebrow in return. “Last time I checked I didn’t need anyone’s permission to go somewhere that I need to,” I said simply. His face flushed slightly and his lips tightened into a line. “Especially you,” I finished. Everyone sucked in a breath, even Lucas. I glanced at him then looked back at the guy. He raised his hand and flicked his black hair out of his face and I recreated his actions, brushing my stray hair back. His eyes narrowed at my movements. “Are you copying me,” he asked confused. “Are you copying me,” I repeated. “Stop that,” he commanded taking a threatening step towards me. “Stop that,” I said trying to mimic his voice. He took another step closer. “Don’t you know who I am?” He asked darkly. “Hmm, let me see, some i***t that thinks he can go around bullying anyone he wants,” I said shrugging my shoulders. People in the crowd gasped audibly and Lucas nudged in in the ribs, probably trying to tell me to shut up. The guy’s friends were laughing though. And the girl was smiling slightly. “I like this one.” One of the guy’s friends snorted. He had light brown hair and freckles.“Hyde zero, mystery girl one,” he said making me smile. “Shut it!” This Hyde guy yelled making everyone fall silent at once. He took more threatening steps towards e before stopping within an arms reach. I had to suppress a gulp and looked up to see his face. Yep I was short, but this was just stupid. I pretty sure he’s half giant or something. No one is this freakishly tall. “Now darling, has your mother never taught you to keep your mouth shut?” He asked c*****g his head to the side. I shrugged. “She tried,” I said simply. “But she soon stopped.” A smirk spread across his lips as his eyes lit up with an idea. Oh no. “If you can’t keep that pretty little mouth of yours shut,” he paused as Lucas moved agitatedly in front of me. “I can find better uses for it,” he purred seductively. I gagged a little as I stared at Hyde’s chest. “Hey, leave her alone,” Lucas growled out as he balled his fists at his sides. Oh no. Hyde turned his head to look to my brother. “What are you gonna do about it?” Lucas gritted his teeth and grabbed my arm starting to walk to the office again. I let him drag me for a couple feet before my other arm got grabbed keeping me in place. “I wasn’t done talking,” he said lowly. I looked at him and rolled my eyes. “Well I’m done listening, and I have better things to do with my time then waste it here.” “Stop it,” Lucas whispered in my ear. I shook him off of my arm and turned to face Hyde. “You really don’t know who I am do you?” He asked, surprise etched on his face. I arched an eyebrow at him and shook my head. “I-” “Leave the poor girl alone Hyde,” Someone behind him said cut me off. Everyone stiffened as if scared and Hyde turned to face the culprit. Looking over Hyde’s shoulder I watched as the crowd parted and six new people walked through, stopping short of where we stood. They were all wearing fancy jackets and to be honest it was a bit intimidating. “How bout you go back to your w***e house Corley,” Hyde said darkly. “And leave you with all the fun? As if, Hyde,” this Corley guy said moving closer. He had light brown hair that sat like a curly mop on his head and hazel eyes that had lit up with anger. He was hot. All these boys were. Damn there must be something in the water, I swear. Note to self, drink more water. I rubbed my arm that Hyde had finally let go of and turned to look at my brother. He frowned at me and gestured towards the office. I nodded. Grabbing the chance while Hyde and Corley guy started bickering between themselves, Lucas and I slipped away from them and into the office. Letting out a breathe I didn’t know I was holding I let my shoulders sag. I smiled halfheartedly at Lucas. He didn’t return the smile, instead he turned on me. Great. “What where you thinking?” he asked running a hand through his coppery hair. I smiled weakly and shrugged my shoulders while looking at my feet. “You’re an i***t, that guy is dangerous. Just look at him!” He raised his voice. I gulped and shrank back from him. He knows I hate it when people yell. “I’m sorry,” I said weakly. He sighed. “Just be careful okay? You need to stay away from him.” “Why?” I asked looking up at him. He rubbed the back of his head and avoided my eyes. He knows something. “I just don’t like the way he looks at you.” It was obvious he knew something but I decided not to push it so I just nodded. “Okay.” He sighed and smiled at me. “Lets just get what we need and go to class,” he suggested. I nodded again. “Okay.”
