Chapter 39 The river sang quietly for Annie and Harry that night. Not sadly. Never sadly, just a little more subdued in its skittering dance than usual. Thunder rolled around the edge of the dark sky, threatening to take away the moonlight, and Annie hoped being out in the lightning wouldn’t make Lucas and Sarah too twitchy. Perched on their favourite rock in the river, the Cherubim could see the glow from over the hill where the hay shed was still burning. Annie felt bad for the poor CFA member who was rostered on to guard it. Her mum was gone. Really gone. She knew her Eden family had a way of telling, of knowing what people wanted. They could check, when someone died, to see if they wanted to come back to their bodies or not. Annie didn’t know how to do that, but she didn’t need to. K
