Chapter 38
After giving Officer Loxwood a very brief rundown of what had happened, Annie offered to return to her farm so she could lead the other police officers to their location. He would need help to bring the two men in.
‘That won’t be necessary,’ the policeman said, just as Lucas barked out a solid ‘No’. It was too quick. Annie knew something was up.
‘You’re exhausted, Annie,’ Lucas added, but again his words were overlapped by Officer Loxwood.
‘They’re already on their way.’
The two of them glanced at each other and then looked away awkwardly.
Lucas took her hand. ‘We’re close enough to the river that they shouldn’t have any trouble following our directions,’ he said. ‘And as they get closer, Mick’s walkie-talkie should work better. They’ll work it out.’
