Not only had the confrontation put too much strain on Uncle Willie’s heart, but his cracked ribs and punctured lung made it difficult to treat him properly. After four days and three more cardiac episodes, Annie noticed that the doctors had stopped talking about how long it might take to stabilise him enough for surgery. His heart was sustaining new damage with each setback and it became apparent to everyone that he probably wouldn’t be coming home. The only person who seemed to be able to ignore the verdict was Uncle. He insisted that Harry bring in the new market reports on grain and stock sales even though he was too sedated to read them, and every time Harry left for some much-needed rest, Uncle would ask the staff to pass on another message to the police.
