‘Stay here, by the water,’ Harry directed, looking each person in the eye for as long as his patience would allow. ‘I need to be able to find you if anything unexpected happens.’
Naomi Gracewood grabbed her daughter by the wrist and pulled her close, as if she expected Lily to go running off into the bush. ‘Are we in any danger?’ she asked Harry, not sounding too anxious, but obviously not completely lulled by his gift.
He smiled at her, and looked her right in the eye, hoping the effect would last for a while after he’d gone. ‘No. The wind is blowing from the north, so even if the fire doesn’t get contained quickly, it will head away from here. If anything changes, someone will come and get you, which is why it’s important that you stay where we can find you.’
