Harry made it about twenty metres before Lucas tackled him from behind and sent them both sprawling. There was a loud crack when they hit the dirt and Annie prayed that it was only a stick. The sound of a fist hitting flesh was less ambiguous.
‘Stop, Lucas! Leave him alone. It wasn’t his fault. I asked him to do it. Please try to listen!’
Frenzied scuffling left no room for her words to mean anything at all, so instead she launched herself into the fray, ignoring the stabbing pain that shot through her jaw as she landed in the middle of the tangle of flailing limbs. Lucas couldn’t hurt her, even by accident. She hoped.
