Chapter 32

Brendan's POV "The letter caught me off guard too but there is nothing wrong with that. They probably understood where their son was and wrote a letter formally asking us both to visit them. If you wants he can stay back at his own pack. I wouldn't mind though," Yasmyn told me. Is she talking to me? Because there is no way in hell that I am staying back at my pack. And for starters, we are not going there so she needs to drop thinking that there is a trip to The Sundown Pack in the first place. "We are not going there," I told her and Natalie seemed like she was taken aback with my tone. Even though she is from my pack, I don't recall any conversation with her. Is she really from my pack? At this rate, I actually don't want to take any risk. "Can you give us a moment of privacy?" I asked Natalie and she bowed to me before walking away. Yasmyn looked at me with her eyebrows raised. "What?" She asked me again and I shook my head at her. "What part of be careful can you not understand, Yasmyn? How do you trust her when I don't know who she is? And she claims that she is someone from my pack," I told her to which she laughed out loud. "Oh My Goodness, Brendan this is exactly why I think you and I don't work together despite the mate bond between us. She is from your pack. She was my neighbour when I lived in The Sundown Pack. She day dreamed that you would be her mate but she understood that I am your mate and not her. How can you not know people of your own pack?" She asked me back and I raised my eyebrow at her. "Do you really know everyone here?" I asked her back and she nodded at me, with a smile on her face. It is impossible for someone to remember so many faces and names when they are often in a group. But since she just told me that Natalie was her neighbour at The Sundown Pack, maybe I can trust her on this one. "But before talking to someone else, be cautious," I told her and she rolled her eyes. We both walked towards the palace again with her steps resembling mine. The pace and everything is same and rhythmic. I realised I liked walking with her. I smiled at the moment but that smile quickly faded away again. I am going to help her and protect her until she doesn't need my protection. She made her choice regarding her companion. And the way she kissed the Rogue King was enough to help me understand that she doesn't see me the way I see her. And I am not going to force her anymore. It is her life. The most I can do, is help her grow and then walk away calmly. After all, I have my own pack to run. Eventually, I will have to head there and live my life ruling them. "How is Adi?" Yasmyn asked me and I nodded at her. "He is stable now. But he needs a lot of rest. I did not tell him anything that he would panic over though," I told her and she let out a sigh of relief. "I don't know what to do with Raul and Vernon. Things are such a mess lately. It wasn't this was just a year ago when I left the palace. How can things change so fast?" She asked me. I wish I had an answer for that, but sadly I don't. "That is exactly why I want you to take extra care with who you are talking and who you are trusting. You need to talk only things that are harmless and the controversial ones, it's better that you keep them in your heart. Remember, the walls have ears" I told Yasmyn and there was a frown on her face as soon as I said that. I know it reminded her of Silas because he was the one who keeps on saying about it. I merely said the same again to see if she still thinks the same of him or if she is ready to talk. I hope she is ready to talk though. We stopped walking when we were at a safe distance from the palace. "If what they say is true and the walls does have ears, it is safe for me to talk in the open air like this. Where there are no walls," she paused and scanned the surroundings before she continued,"Do you really believe what Silas said though?" Well, I don't know how to answer that without making her feel like she was betrayed. "I can only say that there is no reason for you to think he would lie about something like that," I shrugged my shoulders at her. "But that doesn't mean that it can be truth too, right. Because when he claims at something so sensitive like that, he is also tarnishing the reputation of the former Queen. The Queen who is bedridden and is not in a state to defend herself," Yasmyn shook her head. Yes, well. She is thinking logically but I want her to stop doing it and think in a different light. "That is exactly why I think you should give understanding a shot. What would someone like Silas gain from defaming the former Queen when she is bed ridden? He worked for the crown all day and all night. He put his life on the line for the Royal family. What would he gain from that?" I asked her back. Yasmyn stood there, thinking about something and when she gave up, she groaned and started walking again. "I hate that I am alone in this and cannot rely on anyone. My family is a mess and my Queen to be skills are even worse," Yasmyn told me. "I was actually planning on talking about that with you. You need to start acting like a working Royal now. So far the personal life drama weighed too much on you and I understand that. People understand that but this cannot go on forever, can it?" I asked her and she raised her eyebrows at me, and then rolled her eyes again. "So you are going to lecture me on how to keep working when personal life is falling apart? Really?" She asked me back with a smile on her face and I smiled back. "Yeah. Well, a person who left working because of personal life is talking from experience, okay?" I said and she laughed. "Well, finally we are able to talk like civilized adults. Look at us," she said as we both walked inside the palace. Selena and Raul were waiting for us in the living room. Waiting for Yasmyn actually. And wait, how is Raul outside? The last time I remember, he was locked because of what he did to his own brother. My muscle memory kicked in and I stood before Yasmyn, shielding her from both her sister and brother with their eyes on her. "What the heck is happening here, Yasmyn?" Selena asked her sister and she glared at me in the process. "What do you want to know, Selena? Because I can tell you anything you wish for. I can tell you everything that is happening outside the palace and I can tell you exactly how our family is failing in all the aspects. We are the Royal family. The ruling family of the werewolf race and yet, look at us" Yasmyn said as she tried to walk to the front but I pulled her back again, shielding her from people in front of her. "Do not talk to me that way,. Little sister. I am very well aware of whatever is happening outside the palace walls. I chose to stay with our parents because that is also one of our responsibility. If no one comes forward, then that leaves me to be the incharge," Selena said. Okay. With each passing day, Selena is starting to trigger more and more. She need to get down her high horse and see what the heck is actually happening here. She is very quick with moral policing and yet, she talks as if she is the superior being in the entire werewolf history. Except for Adi, I don't think anyone in the Royal family remotely cares about Yasmyn. They see her as that small kid they can push in whatever direction they want to. And as long as I am here, I don't think that is going to happen. "Really? Then mind telling me what you know about things happening outside the palace walls?" I asked Selena and she growled at me. I growled back. I know that she is a member of Royal family but I myself am an Alpha and I bow to no one except the Queen herself. And as far as I know, Selena is not the Queen. "Who do you think you are?" Selena asked me, with her growl growing deeper as she spoke. Raul got into his own element and started growling at me too. I am not going to let these two bullies give Yasmyn a hard time. "Let go, Brendan" Yasmyn said but I didn't. I don't want to take a risk and I certainly don't want to back down infront of these people. "Move, Brendan. I am ordering that as your Queen" she said and that made me move aside. Yasmyn took two steps forward with her head held high. One growl from her made Selena and Raul calm down and take a step back. I monetarily forgot that she has her own wolf now. She is the working Royal and she had her first shift. To a wolf who has a mind of its own. There is no way a wolf like that would sit quiet when someone else is growling in front of her. "Do you even know what he did?" Yasmyn asked Selena and she glared at her sister. "Raul stabbed Vernon. Vernon is now in the hospital, okay? If you know everything that is happening outside of these palace walls, they you would know that. There is a reason I locked him up. Even if you didn't know the reason, you have no right to go against an order from the Queen to be herself," Yasmyn said. Each and every word that came from her mouth showed direct raw power. It was a feast to my eyes watching Selena and Raul stand there stunned. Gone long is their younger sister who they could push according to their liking. Now the person standing before them is the Queen to be and she fears no one. "And when you asked Brendan who he was," Yasmyn took a pause and took one more step closer to Selena,"he is the one who had been helping me with everything. I should be learning things from my sister. From my brothers. From the very people who I call family but here we are. Yes. Let us show the world just how much the Royal family had stooped low. Let us show them with examples. Shall we?" Yasmyn asked Selena and Raul this time. She then searched for the closest guard and then ordered him to throw Raul back in his own room again, lock him up and to hand her the key. And the guards took Raul away. With that, awkward silence hung thick in the air. Selena was at a loss of words and I love watching her this way. She had a lot to talk ever since I came here and now, she was the silent one while Yasmyn was the one who shut her up. "I didn't know all of that," Selena said in a whisper. "Of course you wouldn't. It's been days since someone saw you and you saw someone. I am not saying that you should abandon our parents but you should also give your other siblings a chance too. The last time our mom saw me, you know what happened" Yasmyn said. I am not aware of that though. What happened when Yasmyn went to see her mom the last time? Maybe I should talk to her about it some other time. Now is not the right time. And even their conversation came to a pause when the guard came back and handed Yasmyn the key to Raul's room. But one point stuck with me though. How come Raul did not attempt to run away the moment someone brought him out of his room? Why did he team up with Selena and growl at Yasmyn?! Does that mean his next target is Yasmyn? He didn't want to miss an opportunity so he stayed back. Selena wasn't his Target so he didn't do anything harmful towards her. And yet he growled at Yasmyn. I need to tell her to be careful around Raul. If he stabbed someone like Vernon, then he can stab anyone. I mean Vernon is actually tall, well built and can crush anyone under a minute. "What else is wrong outside the walls?" Selena asked Yasmyn but she just shook her head. "You wouldn't understand until you walk out, Selena" Yasmyn said and watched as Selena turn around and walk back to her room. That left Yasmyn and I in the living room, soaking up the silence after a mini storm. She turned around to look at me and raised her eyebrows at me. I stood before her in pure silence, not knowing what made her mad now. "So you jump to protect me the moment you see danger in a room?" She asked me and I looked at her in confusion. "I guess that was exactly what I told you when I came back. I am going to stand before you like a shield and anything that needs to reach you, should get through me" I told her and watch a small smile dance on her lips. I guess it's a good thing then. "But you need to be safe too, Brendan. I wouldn't appreciate if something happened to you while you were immerses in trying to keep me safe. I wouldn't allow that. So you need to stay safe too," Yasmyn told me. This was remotely the nicest thing she told me ever since we started talking. It's been days now, since I rejected her and a lot has changed. I bowed to her and watched as she walked to her room. Only after I heard the door click, I resumed to my room. When I came here, I didn't know I was going to stay for days. But here I am and I have no idea how many more days I am going to stay here. A paper was moving due to the wind coming from the window. The paper is a neatly folded one and placed on the study table, with a bottle of water acting as a paperweight. I opened it to see that it's my father's handwriting. He indeed wrote a letter to Yasmyn. . . To, Her Majesty, Yasmyn Lorraine of The Moonstone Pack. Me and my Luna, are both aware that our son, The Alpha of The Sundown Pack, Brendan Rivera is with you at the capital pack. We have no problem but we would be delighted if you accept this invitation and visit our pack along with Brendan to be our guests. We are looking forward to meeting you and expecting to be of help to you. Just send me a word again and I shall look into things so your experience would be the best during your stay here. Thank you, Andrews Rivera., Former Alpha of The Sundown Pack. . . Well, it might seem like a harmless letter for people like Yasmyn because they have no idea how my father's mind works. I do and it is clear that he has a hidden motive as he wrote this letter. But it's a good thing we are not visiting that pack. I cannot deal with another thing right now. Exactly then, my wolf Chase spoke to me. "Yasmyn's wolf told me that Yasmyn wanted me to tell you, to sleep early and wake up early. We have a road trip to The Sundown Pack the first thing in the morning" Fuck!
