The fire crackled gently in the small stone fireplace, warming the cozy cottage. Outside, the sky was turning dark, with purples and blues mixing as the sun disappeared. Eva sat wrapped in a thick blanket on a wooden bench, staring into the flames. Her mind wasn’t on the fire—it was on Kyle’s words from earlier.
"You were never just a healer to me."
She hadn’t known what to say then. Her heart had leapt, but her fears had kept her silent. Still, she hadn’t walked away. That had to mean something.
Across the room, Kyle was sharpening his sword slowly. The firelight lit up his face, making his eyes shine. He looked calm, but Eva knew he was thinking deeply.
She finally spoke. "You meant what you said, didn’t you?"
Kyle looked up. "Yes. Every word."
She nodded, her hands gripping the blanket tighter. "I feel it too. I don’t know what it means yet, but I feel it."
He stood and came to kneel in front of her. He took her hands gently. "We don’t need all the answers right now. I just know that this—us—it’s real."
They sat in silence, eyes locked. The fire crackled softly, and the first stars appeared in the sky outside.
Suddenly, Kyle’s eyes narrowed. He looked toward the window.
"What is it?" Eva asked.
"There’s magic nearby. Something old. Something watching."
He moved to the door, placing his hand on the wood. A soft glow spread across it—he had set a magical protection spell.
Eva stood up. "Is it a Shadow?"
"Maybe. I don’t know for sure. But we’re leaving at first light."
They didn’t sleep that night. Instead, they packed their things quietly. Eva filled her bag with herbs, food, healing supplies, and a small spell book. Kyle packed weapons—swords, daggers, magical stones.
They worked like a team, moving around each other with calm purpose.
As the sky began to lighten, Eva felt a strange warmth in her chest. It spread slowly, like a soft glow under her skin. She gasped and touched the spot below her collarbone.
She rushed to the mirror and pulled down her shirt collar. There, glowing gently on her skin, was a red flame-shaped mark.
"Kyle!"
He ran over and stared at the mark. His eyes widened.
"The Ember Mark," he whispered.
"What is it?"
He reached out, fingers hovering over the glowing mark. "It’s a magical sign. It forms when a strong bond begins between two souls—a fae and a mortal. It means fate is bringing us together."
"But I didn’t do anything. I didn’t use any spell."
"You didn’t need to," he said. "The mark appears when feelings are true. When two people are connected deeply."
Eva looked at it, still amazed. It didn’t hurt. It felt warm and comforting.
"If the bond is completed," Kyle explained, "we’ll be connected forever. We’ll feel each other’s emotions. Our magic will be tied together."
"And if it’s not completed?"
"It might fade. Or it could hurt us. These bonds either grow or break. There’s no in-between."
Eva looked into his eyes. "So what do we do?"
He gently touched the mark. It glowed brighter under his fingers.
"We wait. When we’re both ready, we’ll complete it. Not before."
They left the cottage at sunrise. The forest was quiet and full of mist. Kyle walked ahead, watching carefully. Eva followed closely, her hand near her dagger.
They walked in silence for over an hour. Birds chirped in the trees, but the air felt heavy.
Then everything went quiet.
Kyle stopped. Eva froze.
From the fog came a dark shape. A tall figure with glowing gold eyes. A Shadow.
"Stay behind me," Kyle said.
The creature raised its hand. Cold, dark magic rushed toward them. Kyle pushed back with fire. The two magics clashed, sending light and wind through the trees.
Eva saw the Shadow circling them.
She pulled her dagger and threw it. It landed near the creature’s feet—and exploded in a burst of light.
The Shadow screamed and vanished into ash.
Kyle turned to her, shocked. "That was amazing."
Eva’s hand shook. "I didn’t want to just stand there."
He stepped forward and hugged her. She didn’t hesitate this time. She leaned into him, resting her head on his chest.
"You were brave," he whispered.
"So were you."
He touched the Ember Mark. It glowed softly.
"This bond is real," he said. "And it’s ours."
By late morning, they reached an old stone ruin hidden in the forest. It had tall arches covered in moss and vines. The air buzzed with protective magic.
Lanterns floated above them, casting soft blue light. In the center was a stone circle with carved symbols. Kyle led her inside.
"We’ll rest here for now. It’s safe."
They made a small camp. Kyle lit a magical fire, and Eva set out herbs and bandages.
Later, they sat on a stone together.
"Do you think we’ll be okay?" Eva asked.
"For a while," Kyle said. "But the Shadows are getting stronger."
Eva looked at him. "Do you regret saving me? That night when I was hurt?"
Kyle looked back at her. "Not even once. Meeting you changed everything."
Eva smiled softly. Her heart was full, even if she wasn’t ready to say it out loud.
The Ember Mark glowed again. A quiet sign of hope.
For the first time in a long while, Eva believed they might make it.
