๐—งhe emergency staircase echoed with the sound of pounding footsteps. "Faster!" David shouted. Amara clutched her backpack as they raced down the concrete stairs. Above them, the laboratory door finally gave way with a deafening crash. "They're escaping!" a voice roared. The chase had begun. David pushed open the rear exit of the ICT building, and they burst into the afternoon sunlight. Students scattered in confusion as two black SUVs sped around the corner toward them. "This way!" David pointed toward the old faculty buildings. They ran through narrow walkways, weaving between students who had no idea what was happening. Behind them, three men in dark clothes jumped from the SUVs and continued the pursuit on foot. "They're gaining on us!" Amara gasped. David spotted a campus shuttle bus pulling away from a stop. "Jump!" They sprinted, catching the bus just as it began to move. The driver, startled by their sudden arrival, shouted at them, but David quickly apologized and asked him not to stop. From the back window, Amara watched the men shrink into the distance. For the moment, they had escaped. --- The bus dropped them near an old church on the edge of town. Inside the quiet building, the air was cool and still. Sunlight streamed through stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns across the floor. Father Michael, the elderly priest, recognized Amara immediately. "You look frightened, my child." "I need a safe place," she said. Without asking questions, he led them into a small office behind the sanctuary. David connected his laptop once more. "This time we'll make copies," he said. He copied every file from the memory card onto three separate flash drives. "If they destroy one," he explained, "the evidence survives." Amara nodded. For the first time in days, hope began to replace fear. As David opened the final audio recording, a familiar voice filled the room. It was Emmanuel Okafor. "If you're hearing this," Amara's father said, "then I am no longer alive." Amara's eyes filled with tears. "I refused to help Chief Gabriel Eze steal from our community. He threatened my family. If anything happens to me, know thisโ€”I did not die from illness. I was poisoned." Silence filled the room. Amara felt the world tilt beneath her feet. Her father had been murdered. Every story she had believed since childhood had been a lie. Father Michael slowly removed his glasses. "I suspected something was wrong all those years ago," he said quietly. "But no one could prove it." David closed the laptop. "We can prove it now." --- That evening, news spread across town that Chief Gabriel Eze would deliver a public speech the following morning during the annual Community Development Celebration. Thousands of people were expected to attend. David looked at Amara. "This is our chance." "If we reveal the evidence in front of everyone," Amara said, "he won't be able to hide." "But he'll be expecting trouble," Father Michael warned. "He has powerful friends." Amara stood and looked out the church window. For years, her father had carried the truth alone. Grace had risked everything to protect it. Now it was her turn. "I've spent my whole life afraid," she said firmly. "I'm done running." Outside, thunder rolled across the evening sky as dark clouds gathered once again. The final confrontation was only hours away.
