Chapter One - The Diary
it had fallen since dawn, turning the dusty roads around the university into muddy paths. Students hurried across the campus with backpacks over their heads, laughing as they tried to escape the downpour. Some squeezed under the corridors of the lecture halls, while others waited patiently for the rain to slow. Amara stood alone beneath the old science building, clutching a notebook tightly against her chest. At twenty-two, she was in her final year at university. Every lecture, every assignment, and every examination mattered. She had one dream—to build a better future for her widowed mother and younger brother. Life had never been easy. Her father had died when she was twelve. Since then, her mother sold vegetables in the local market from morning until evening. There were days they ate only once. Yet her mother never stopped reminding her, "Education is the one thing nobody can take away from you." Those words had become Amara's strength. As the rain eased, her phone vibrated. "Amara," her mother said over the phone, "please come home after lectures today. I need your help clearing your father's old room." "My father's room?" Amara asked, surprised. "Yes. It's time." For years, no one had touched the small room where her father kept his books, documents, and personal belongings. After his death, the door had remained locked, as though opening it would reopen old wounds. "I'll be home before sunset," Amara promised. ... By evening, the rain had stopped. Their small family house smelled of damp earth and fresh soup. After eating, Amara followed her mother to the tiny room at the back of the house. Dust floated through the air as the old wooden door creaked open. Everything was exactly as it had been years ago. A faded chair. A bookshelf filled with worn-out books. An old wooden table. A rusty metal box sat beneath the bed. "Take whatever looks useful," her mother said softly. "We'll throw away the rest." Amara nodded. She dusted the shelves, folded old clothes, and stacked papers into neat piles. Hours passed. Then she noticed something strange. The metal box was heavier than it looked. Its lock had already rusted away. She lifted the lid. Inside were yellowed letters, a silver wristwatch that had stopped ticking years ago, a family photograph... and a dark brown leather diary tied with a faded blue ribbon. There was no title. Only her father's initials. E.O. Curiosity washed over her. She untied the ribbon and opened the first page. The handwriting was neat. "If you are reading this, it means I could no longer protect the truth." Amara's heartbeat quickened. She turned another page. "Never trust the people who smile the widest." A cold breeze slipped through the broken window. She looked around the silent room. For a brief moment, she felt as though someone was watching her. She quickly dismissed the feeling and continued reading. The next page contained only a list of names. Most meant nothing to her. But one name froze her in place. It belonged to one of the richest and most respected families in the town. Why would her father write their name? Before she could read further, the lights went out. Darkness swallowed the room. "Mum?" Amara called. No answer. Then— Three slow knocks echoed on the front door. Knock. Knock. Knock. Her mother wasn't expecting visitors. The knocks came again, louder this time. Amara gripped the diary tightly. Something told her that whoever stood outside had not come by accident. And somehow... It all began with the diary in her hands.
