The black SUV pulled away slowly. Amara kept her eyes on it until it disappeared around the corner. Her hands were shaking. She wanted to run, but she forced herself to stay calm. "Think, Amara," she whispered to herself. She couldn't go home immediately. If someone was watching her, they might lead the enemy straight to her mother. Instead, she walked to the university library. It was one of the quietest places on campus, filled with students preparing for examinations. No one paid much attention to her as she found a seat in the far corner. She took out the memory card. It looked ordinary, yet it carried the weight of secrets that had already cost lives. The problem was, she had no way to read it. Just then, someone pulled out the chair opposite her. "Mind if I sit here?" Amara looked up. It was David Nwosu, a final-year Computer Science student. They knew each other only in passing. David was quiet, brilliant with computers, and always willing to help classmates with technical problems. "You look worried," David said. "I'm fine," Amara replied quickly. David wasn't convinced, but he didn't press further. As he packed his laptop into his bag, Amara noticed something. A memory card reader. Her heart skipped. She almost asked for help, but Grace's warning echoed in her mind. "Someone close to you is working for Chief Gabriel Eze." Could she trust anyone? Not yet. David smiled politely and left. --- That evening, Amara returned home by a different route. As she reached the compound, she noticed the front door was open. Her heart raced. "Mum!" she shouted. No answer. She rushed inside. The sitting room was a mess. Chairs had been overturned. Cupboards stood open. Drawers had been emptied onto the floor. Someone had searched the house. Panic gripped her. "Mum!" "I-I'm here," came a weak voice from the kitchen. Amara found her mother sitting on the floor, shaken but unharmed. "They came looking for you," her mother whispered. "They asked strange questions... about your father... about a diary." "Did they take anything?" Her mother slowly shook her head. "They couldn't find what they wanted." Relief washed over Amara. The diary and memory card were still hidden in her backpack. But now there was no doubt. The people hunting her knew exactly what they were looking for. --- The next morning, Amara made a difficult decision. She would trust one person. She found David outside the university ICT centre. "I need your help," she said quietly. David looked surprised. "With what?" "It's... complicated." He studied her face for a moment before nodding. "Come with me." Inside the ICT laboratory, David locked the door behind them. Amara handed him the memory card. "I need to know what's on this." David inserted it into his computer. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then a password prompt appeared. David frowned. "This is heavily encrypted." He worked silently for nearly twenty minutes. Finally... The screen unlocked. A folder appeared. Inside were dozens of files. Bank statements. Scanned contracts. Audio recordings. Photographs. One video file caught David's attention. He clicked it. The screen showed a meeting that had taken place many years earlier. Four men sat around a table. One of them was Amara's father. Another was Chief Gabriel Eze. The recording was clear. Chief Gabriel slid several documents across the table. "This money belongs to us now," he said coldly. "We'll blame the missing funds on the workers. Nobody will question us." Amara covered her mouth. Her father's voice answered firmly. "I'll never help you steal from this community." Chief Gabriel smiled. "Then you'll regret refusing me." The recording ended abruptly. David stared at the screen. "This..." he whispered, "...could destroy him." Before Amara could respond, every computer in the room suddenly went black. The lights went out. A loud alarm began to ring throughout the building. David looked toward the window. Several black SUVs had stopped outside the ICT centre. Men in dark clothing stepped out. One pointed directly toward the building. "They've found us," David said. The laboratory door shook violently. Someone was trying to force it open. David grabbed his backpack and looked at Amara. "There's another exit." The door splintered as a heavy blow landed against it. "Run!" David shouted. As they sprinted toward the emergency staircase, Amara realized something important. Grace had been right. She couldn't survive this alone. For the first time since finding the diary... She had found an ally.
