Chapter 1 -Hidden
Growing up, I knew I was different. My grandmother always kept a close eye on me. At the age of 12 she started giving me bracelets with beautiful charms and told me never to remove them. As I grew, she taught me about the supernatural world and told stories about my mother, and how I could never show myself to that world or very bad things would happen. I was content with my life, working in the library, I had my books and a few friends, life was great, but I always had a niggling feeling like I was missing something.
Once I got older, I learnt what the bracelets were and how they protected me, but there is always a downside to protection. You see I am a trybrid, I have the powers of a witch, vampire, and shifter. The bracelets only suppress my vampire and shifter powers, so other supernaturals cannot sense them, but the problem is I can’t sense other supernatural things either, unless I use my witch powers. With my witchy side, it's mostly human, but if I use my powers and complete spells, charms and potions, it lets off a distinct scent that can be smelt by other supernatural people and they can use this to find me. If I limit my witch powers, the chance of that happening becomes very low. If I have to use my powers, I have to help disperse the scent quicker or use other methods to try and hide it.
Friday, about 10 minutes before closing, I was finishing up stacking the returned books onto their shelves when Sadie, my best friend, entered the library. She is a beautiful perky blonde with a extraverted personality, who continually wants me to get out and see the world, but I love my library. I see the world through my imagination. Books are my escape for fewer people to deal with.
“Lexi, you sexy b***h, let’s go out tonight, you promised it was your 21st birthday on Wednesday and you said we could hit the town” Sadie says as she eloquently walks up to me. I don’t know how she is so graceful. Her long legs in those heels I would be stumbling all over the place but she has the prowess of a lioness.
“Ugh, I know I promised, but it’s not really my scene” I say as I continue to stack the unwanted books back on their shelves. I'm in my go-to outfit-a pair of jeans, knock-off converse snickers and a plain t-shirt.
“No, I’m not taking no for an answer, we are going out, I’m dressing you up and that’s final,” Sadie says. “Fine, but I’m not staying out too late or drinking too much” I say, knowing she is going to want to do shots.
Once I'd closed up the library, headed home, with Sadie coming with me as she already had her clothes in her bag, so I wouldn’t chicken out. When we get home, she picks out a tight-fitting black dress that shows off my boobs and is slightly too short for my tastes that I’ve had in my cupboard for forever. Paired with black heels that are not so tall that I would fall over, but enough to give me a little more height. We have some warmup drinks and then we are ready to go. Before heading out, I check my bracelets to make sure they are secure and none have been damaged, as drinking is when I’m most likely to have any sort of power mishap. We headed out, got a taxi and headed to Rubies, a pub that has a night club upstairs that plays music way too loud for my liking. We have a few drinks in the bar and Sadie has a few guys hit on her, which she loves, but she doesn’t ever go home with any of them. She says she is waiting for her soul mate. Once the upstairs club is in full swing, we make our way upstairs.
