First Day: A Feeling Without A Name
On a fateful Monday morning, the newly admitted jss1 students resumed school for the first time, quietly settling into their classrooms as they adjusted to a new enironment and an unfamiliar chapter of their lives. There was a girl named Gracie, trying to locate her class among the eight different JSS1 classes . Unsure of where to go , she stepped into one of the classrooms. That was when she noticed a girl sitting quietly by the window. Gracie didn't know why her eyes lingered or why her chest felt strangely warm. Everything else faded the noise, the movement, the confusion . It wasn't anything she could explain. She only knew that, in that moment, something unfamiliar but gentle stirred inside her. Gracie's attention was suddenly pulled back by the sharp voice of a senior perfect who had been assigned to guide the newly admitted students. The senior perfect called out for the JSS1G students to settle into their class which was Gracie's class. The JSS1 students had been divided into eight classes, named alphabetically. Gracie quickly joined the other students as they followed the senior perfect to their classroom. The classroom buzzed with quiet chatter as students shuffled to their seats, some whispering nervously, others looking around with wide, curious eyes. wooden desks scraped softly against the floor, and the smell of new books and polished floor filled the air. Gracie found a seat in the second row and quietly settled in, she tried to focus on the board, on the unfamiliar faces around her, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the girl she had seen earlier. She shook her head slightly, confused by herself. It didn't make sense. She had seen many girls before so why did this one feel different? she asked herself, before she could think any further, the class teacher walked in, and the room instantly fell silent. Gracie straightened in her seat, her heart still beating a little faster than usual, unaware that this was only the beginning of a feeling that would slowly change everything she thought she understood about herself. The class teacher introduced herself as Mrs. Julie. She was simple, pretty, and fair-complexioned, with a warm smile that immediately put the students at ease. She asked everyone to introduce themselves, and one after the other, the students introduced themselves. when it was Gracie's turn, her palms felt slightly sweaty, and her stomach fluttered nervously. "I'm Gracie", she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. She glanced around quickly, hoping no one would notice how nervous she felt. Afterwards, Mrs. Julie gave them a proper introduction to the school explaining how things worked, the rules to follow, and how the teachers operated. She spoke calmly and clearly, making sure everyone understood. Before ending the session , she reminded them that her door was always open if anyone needed help or had a problem. As their class teacher, she explained, she was responible for them and would always be there to guide them. Gracie's school was an all girls school, well known for its excellence in academics, sports, and moral discipline. It was run by a Catholic Church, giving it a reputation as a place where students were encouraged to strive not only for knowledge but also for godly values. The school was one of the largest in the community, with a high student population. Beacuse of this, each grade was divided into multiple classes. Gracie's grade alone had eigty divisions, each with around fifty students. The school had both boarding and day students. Gracie was a day student, which meant she went home after classes, unlike many of her classmate who stayed on campus throughout the term. The school had always been a dream come true for Gracie, her mother had atteneded it, and now she was following in her footsteps. At eleven years old, Gracie was a striking young girl, tall and slim, with brown skin that glowed in the sunlight, and a smile so contagious it could light up a room. She was brillant, clearly inheriting her intelligence and sharp mind from her mother. Gracie came from a single-parent household. Her father had left even before she was born, so her mother, Mrs. Joy, had raised her single-handedly. At thirty-one years old, Mrs. Joy owned a salon shop and worked tirelessly to give her daughter the best life possible. Gracue, in turn, was everything a mother could hope for, gentle, kind, patient, and obedient. She had a quiet strength, a thoughtful nature, and a heart full of respect and care for those around her. Her mother's sacrifices were never lost on her, and she carried herself with a maturity that often surprised people her age. Being in this school wasn't just about acadamics or reputation for Gracie, it was about carrying on a family legacy, making her mother proud, and stepping into a world her mother had once walked herself. As the day progressed, Gracie tried to focus on her lessoms, as teachers were entering her class but her mind kept wandering back to that girl. The girl Gracie met earlier was in JSS1F, the class was just opposite Gracie's own. Every time she thought about her, a strange warmth spread through her chest. Gracie didn't understand what it was, but she knew it was different, something new, something she couldn't yet name. It was time for break, during break, Gracie tried to focus on her new classmates, introducing herself to the few who sat nearby. Yet, her eyes kept drifting to the window of JSS1F whenever she could. And there she was reading book quietly, completely unaware that Gracie was noticing her. Gracie's heart fluttered in a way she didn't understand. it was gentle, nervous, and exciting all at once. She found herself smiling, feeling almost guilty for attention she couldn't help giving.Who was this girl? Why did she feel... different? The bell rang , signaling the end of break, and Gracie had to force herself to pay attention to her own classroom again. But she knew one thing, she would notice her again, somehow, someday. And for some reason, the thought made her feel both anxious and strangely happy. The rest of the morning passed in a blur of introduction, explanations, and the careful settling of new students into routines. Gracie tried her best to focus on Mrs. Julie's instructions and the excitement of her first day, but her mind kept wandering. Every now and then, when the classroom door opened for a passing teacher or a student from another class, Gracie's eyes unconciously flicked toward JSS1F. And more often than not, she caught glimpses of her, the girl from earlier moving gracefully through the classroon, her calm presence drawing attention without even trying. Gracie couldn't but notice every small movement, every subtle gesture. She shook her head slightly, chastising herself sliently. Focus, Gracie it's just the first day. But even as she told herself that a small, warm feeling lingered inside her a feeling she couldn't explain, one that made her heart beat a little faster and her thoughts turn back to the girl again and again. By the time the last period ended and Gracie packed her things to leave, she found herself hoping she would see her again tomorrow. It was a curious, confusing feeling, and though she didn't understand it yet, she knew one thing for certain; she wanted it. By late afternoon, Gracie arrived home, tired but exicted from her first day at school. The familiar gate of their home felt comforting, and the smell of her mother's salon drifting from outside made her smile. " Mom!" Gracie called as a she entered. I'm back!". Mrs. Joy looked up from a client she was attending to, wiping her hands on a towel. "There's my girl! How was your day?" she asked, her eyes bright with curiosity. Gracie took off her school bag dropped it gently by the door. "It was... good, Mom," she said, trying to sound casual. "The teachers are nice, and I met some classmates. Mrs.Julie, my class teacher, is really kind and explained everything about the school. The school is bigger than I imagined, but i think I'll get used to it." Mrs. joy smiled, a proud glow on her face. "That's my girl. Did you make any friends yet?". Gracie nodded slowly. "A few. Everyone seems really nice. And the school... it's even better than I remembered from your stories. I think I'll like it here". Mrs. Joy ruffled Gracie's hair affectionately. "I'm so happy to hear that, sweetheart. I knew you'd fit in perfectly." Gracie smiled, keeping her thought to herself. There were things she had seen, felt, and noticed today, feelings that confused her, a girl who had caught her attention, but she didn't dare mention them. Not yet. For now, she simply talked about school in the safe, expected way a daughter would, careful to hide the flutter in her chest and the curiosity that had already begun to grow.
