Chapter 8

The last bell for school dismissal rang and Mike quickly carried his school bag, Leo did the same as they walked out of the class room and head to their locker room to drop most of their books.

“Men, that girl is hot,” Mike confessed.

As he looked at Leo, who wasn’t paying attention to what he was saying.

“Hey dude, I am talking to you,” he tapped Leo who just looked at him quickly as though he just returned from a transit.

“What’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting wired all morning, is everything okay? Mike asked as he stops.

“Yeah, I am fine, and why did you stop? Leo asked, as he urged him to keep walking.

“I was saying something to you, and you didn’t answer,” Mike points out.

“Sorry, I didn’t hear you, what were you saying?” Leo asked him.

On getting to the locker room, Leo opened his locker and placed some of his book inside his locker, as he took out the one he will be reading at the library.

Mike puts his own book into his locker and locked it with his key.

“I was saying that Kim invited me to come have dinner with her mum this evening,” Mike smiled.

“Wow, that’s nice, I am happy for you dude,” Leo pats Mikes shoulder as he jammed his locker and locked it with his key.

“Yeah, I have to get going now, see you around,” Mike shook Leo’s hand, and left the room excided.

“Leo watched him until he walked out of the door, before taking a deep breath of relieve, he turned around and saw other student in the room as well.

He was about leaving the room when someone startled him.

“Hello, Leo,” Jason said, standing in front of Leo.

“Hey Jason, what’s up,” he said to him.

“I am fine, sorry I’ve been meaning to talk to you.”

“Okay, I am all ears.”

“It’s about the girl I saw you with yesterday, is she a new student?”Jason asked.

“No, she is not a student in this school,” Leo answered.

“Really, so why was she here yesterday?”

“She was here to see me; do you have a problem with that?” Leo asked.

“No, not at all, I just want to get to know her more, Please can you make that work?” Jason asked.

“Why do you want to know her?”

“That’s because I like her,” Jason confessed.

“Well, she is my girl friend,” Leo lied.

“Really, wow, you are so lucky to have a beautiful girl like that, please don’t toll with her heart.”

“Else I will take her away from you,” Jason said and left him.

Leo was surprised as he watched Jason leave the room, he thought about what Jason had just said, and knew he is capable of taking Melissa away from him.

He came from a rich home as well, and can have any girl he wants, he remembered that Jason has dated at most three girls from his class, and dumped them, which caused the girls to fight among themselves just to get him back.

Leo left the locker room and found his way to the library, the library attendance Mrs. Flora said hello to him, and whispered something in a low tone so only him could hear as it made him giggle.

Leo settled down at the second row, taking a seat at the window of the library, he looked around the room and found just a few student who were buried in their studies as he unzipped his bag and took out his book and began reading,

Leo took out his book from his bag after settle down by the side of the window and began reading. As he tried to concentrate because his thoughts were filled with Melissa. He was at the library for two hours and when he heard a foot step behind him and raised his head up just to see Mrs flora the library attendance standing in front of him.

“Its about closing hour, and I am ready to go home,” her came out in a whisper.

“Oh, what time is it,” Leo asked and take a glance at his wrist watch.

“Four thirty,” she said, looking at her time as well.

“Okay Mrs Flora, I didn’t realize that it was late already,” as he looked around him and found out that he was the only one at the library.

“That’s because you were engrossed in your book, and I like your dedication to your studies Leo, do keep it up,” She smiled.

“I will let allow you park up,” she said and walked back to her desk.

Leo looked at her as she disappeared at the corner of the building, Leo stood up from his chair and packed up his book that lay on the table into his bag and began walking out of the library when she heard Mrs Flora’s voice behind him.

“Can I give you a ride home?”

Leo turned sharply and looked at her as she was about locking the door to the library.

“I will appreciate that Mrs Flora,” Leo said.

Mrs Flora after locking the door walked pass Leo who was standing and waiting for her to take the lead to where her car is been parked at the school parking lot. As he followed behind her.

As they walked out of the school building every where was so deserted because people had left much earlier, on getting to the parking lot Mrs Flora opened the door to her old Mercedes Benz entered and opened the passenger’s side for Leo since the door handle is spoilt from outside.

Few people around the island own a car, because not much people could afford one. And the few people who won cars were middle class, who are teachers or small business owner, and their cars were not fancy cars like that of Mrs Flora.

Leo got seated as Mrs Flora started the car and not long they were on the road, the noise from the car filled the car which glass was not wind up just so air can enter.

“How is your mum doing?” Mrs Flora asked.

“I haven’t seen her in Sunday school for two Sundays now.”

“She is fine?” Leo smiled.

“She wasn’t feeling that Good for two Sundays now, that was why she didn’t show up in church for two Sundays,” Leo explained.

“Oh, how is she feeling now?”

“She is better,” Leo replied.

As he focused his face on the road, as there was silence in the car again.

“How is it going with school?”

“Good.”

“Have you heard of the scholarship exam?”

“Yes.” Leo nodded.

“And how are you preparing for that, I hope you are reading, and if you want outline for that do let me know I will make out one for you.”

“You are one among the best students in school, and I know you can make our community proud.”

Leo just gave her a faint smile.

“I will be very glad to have the outline,” he finally said.

Leo was so fun of Mrs Flora’s generosity and her kind gesture, and everybody likes her around town, but things haven’t been that rosy for her she got married about six years ago and had to child, and just last year she lost her husband at sea, although words heard it that he fled with another woman and they are both living at the north somewhere in Chicago.

Leo can’t stop feeling sorry for her, because she’s been through a lot and is still holding on and still being nice to people around her. Leo was lost in his thought that he didn’t know when Mrs Flora stopped the car.

“Here you go,” she said matching the brake to the car.

Leo looked up and saw that he was at his stop, with that he eased the seat belt and opened the door to the car as he stepped down.

“Thanks’ a lot Mrs Flora,” he said lifting his school bag that lay on the floor of the car.

“It’s nothing,” Flora said.

“And tell your mum I will come visit her by weekend,” she said and waved good bye to Leo who shut the door to the car and waited for her to ride along.

Leo also waved back at her and watched as the car pulled off, he walked down to the gate sluggishly because he was very tired and hungry as well, Leo was very glad that Mrs Flora offered to drop him off, else he didn’t know how he would have walked that distance back home without fainting on his way.

Leo rang the ball to the gate and one of the security men peeked and on seeing that it was Leo the cook’s son, opened up.

“Good afternoon,” he greeted as the man nodded without a word.

He walked about three minutes into the compound before sighting the gigantic structure which stood at the east end of the yard, and his eyes gazed at melissa’s window as he wondered she might be doing at that time.

‘Maybe reading,” he thought, before taking his right which led to their own apartment.

Leo found the key to their apartment at the flower jar which stood at the pavement of the house, that’s where his mum now drops house Key for him, snice he is not allowed to go into the main building again.

Else he would have gone to the main building where his mum works, eat his lunch and take the key from her, go home change his uniform and come back to help out.

But everything is now different for days now and he has been trying to adjust, although Leo feels bad about the new development because he won’t be able to help his mum with her chores, and he won’t have the time to bump into Melissa and stare at her beautiful face.

But at the sometime he was relieved because he would spend more time in school and study, When Leo got inside, he went straight to the kitchen to see if he could rustle up something to eat, when he saw a food flacks on the dining table. And saw a written note which says that he should eat the food and have his rest, Leo opened the plate of food and smiled as a sweet aroma filled the room, his smiled at went to get plate and cutlery from the kitchen cabinet, she settled down on the chair and began eating, after which he went up to his room took of his dress and lay down to take a nap.
