Julian Vane built his empire on one rule: never trust love.

As the cold and powerful CEO of Vane Technologies, he controls everything—until his late grandfather's will gives him an impossible ultimatum: get married within thirty days or lose the company he spent his life building.

Determined to treat marriage like a business deal, Julian begins searching for the perfect contract wife. But everything changes when the search leads him to Maya Lin—the woman he loved five years ago and the woman he believed had vanished from his life forever.

Maya is hiding secrets of her own, including a young daughter and a past filled with lies. When shocking truths begin to surface, Julian discovers that Maya's disappearance was no accident. Someone powerful manipulated their lives, erased their memories, and is willing to do anything to keep the truth buried.

Now, with enemies closing in, deadly conspiracies unfolding, and a mysterious countdown threatening to destroy everything, Julian and Maya must uncover the secrets of the past before it's too late.

Chapter One: The Ultimatum
"You have thirty days to get married, Mr. Vane. Or you lose everything." The words settled over the boardroom like a dark cloud, instantly draining the room of its usual confidence and energy. Every person seated around the polished black conference table became perfectly still as the meaning of the chairman's announcement sank in. At the head of the table sat Julian Vane, the billionaire CEO of Vane Technologies, a man whose name commanded respect throughout Manhattan's business world. For years, he had faced corporate wars, hostile takeovers, and ruthless competitors without showing even the slightest c***k in his composure. Yet as he stared at the digital copy of his grandfather's will, he felt a rare sensation tightening in his chest. Around him, the twelve board members watched closely. Some appeared uncomfortable, avoiding direct eye contact, while others struggled to hide their satisfaction. Those individuals had spent years waiting for an opportunity to challenge Julian's control over the company. Now, they believed fate had finally handed them the weapon they needed. Julian lowered the tablet onto the table and leaned back in his chair. Although his expression remained calm, the coldness in his eyes was enough to make several people look away. "No." The single word cut through the silence. The president adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat before speaking again. "No?" he repeated carefully. "I built this company," Julian replied, his voice steady but dangerous. "Every major contract, every expansion, every breakthrough technology that made Vane Technologies the industry leader happened because of my work. Nobody is taking it away from me because of some ridiculous condition written by a dead man." Several board members shifted uneasily in their seats. The president folded his hands together. "Unfortunately, your grandfather anticipated that reaction. The clause was reviewed and protected by multiple legal teams before his death. If you remain unmarried on your thirty-fifth birthday next month, sixty percent of the company's controlling shares will automatically transfer to the board." The words landed like a hammer. Julian's jaw tightened. Even after death, his grandfather was still trying to control him. The old man had always believed in love. Throughout Julian's childhood, he had spoken endlessly about loyalty, marriage, and family. He had insisted that success meant nothing without someone to share it with. Unfortunately, Julian's own experiences had taught him a very different lesson. Love had destroyed his father, shattered his family, and left scars that never truly healed. To him, love was not strength. Love was weakness. And weakness had a way of ruining lives. The meeting ended twenty minutes later. By the time Julian stepped into his private office on the highest floor of Vane Tower, Manhattan had disappeared beneath a violent storm. Rain slammed against the massive windows while lightning illuminated the skyline in brilliant flashes of silver and white. The city stretched endlessly below him, glowing through the darkness like a sea of stars. Marcus Sterling was already waiting inside. As Chief Operating Officer of Vane Technologies, Marcus had worked beside Julian for nearly a decade. He was one of the few people Julian trusted enough to call a friend. Marcus took one look at his expression and raised an eyebrow. "You look like you're deciding who to bury." Julian loosened his tie and walked toward the window. For several moments, he said nothing. Then he spoke. "I need a wife." Marcus nearly dropped the coffee cup in his hand. "A wife?" he asked in disbelief. Julian turned to face him. "A contract wife," he clarified. "Someone intelligent enough to understand a business arrangement and discreet enough not to complicate my life." Marcus stared at him as though he had lost his mind. "You've spent the last ten years telling the world that marriage is a scam." "And now I need one." The irony would have been amusing under different circumstances. Unfortunately, there was nothing amusing about losing control of a company worth billions of dollars. Before Marcus could continue arguing, the office door opened without warning. Vanessa Thorne stepped inside. The sound of her red heels echoed across the marble floor as she crossed the room with effortless confidence. Beautiful, ambitious, and dangerously intelligent, Vanessa had once been one of Manhattan's most admired socialites. She also happened to be one of Julian's most persistent ex-girlfriends. A smile touched her lips. "I heard the news," she said. "Looks like Manhattan's most powerful bachelor is finally desperate." Julian's expression hardened immediately. "If you're here to volunteer, leave." Vanessa laughed softly. "You always know how to make a woman feel appreciated." "I'm busy." Her smile faded slightly. "You know, finding a wife won't be as easy as you think." "I didn't ask for your opinion." For a brief moment, irritation flashed across Vanessa's face before disappearing beneath her usual confidence. Then she stepped closer. "Be careful, Julian." The warning caught him off guard. His eyes narrowed. "Why?" Vanessa hesitated. For the first time since entering the office, she seemed uncertain. "Because someone is already moving against you." Julian frowned. "What does that mean?" Instead of answering, Vanessa's gaze shifted toward Marcus. Only for a second. But Julian noticed. The look was brief enough to be dismissed as meaningless, yet something about it felt wrong. When Vanessa finally left, the atmosphere in the office felt noticeably heavier. Julian looked toward Marcus. His friend seemed unusually quiet. Too quiet. Hours later, long after most of Manhattan had gone to sleep, Marcus sat alone inside a dark parking garage beneath Vane Tower. The distant sound of rain echoed through the concrete structure as he pulled an encrypted phone from his pocket. The screen illuminated his face. A hidden message appeared. TARGET ACTIVATED. PHASE ONE COMPLETE. Marcus stared at the words before typing a response. The reply arrived almost immediately. MAKE SURE JULIAN CHOOSES HER. For several seconds, Marcus remained motionless. Then a slow smile appeared on his face. It was not the smile of a loyal friend. It was the smile of a man hiding dangerous secrets. Far above him, completely unaware of the betrayal unfolding beneath his own company, Julian stood alone inside his office. The storm continued to rage outside. His tie had been discarded, and several candidate profiles were displayed across his computer screen. If marriage was the only way to save his company, then he would approach it the same way he approached every other problem in his life—with logic, efficiency, and careful planning. He had already instructed his team to search for women who met specific requirements. No scandals. No criminal history. No connection to Manhattan's elite circles. No interest in fame. Most importantly, no emotional expectations. Marriage would be nothing more than a contract. A business arrangement. Nothing else. As he reviewed another profile, his screen suddenly refreshed. A new file appeared. Curious, Julian opened it. The information seemed ordinary enough. Female. No social media presence. No criminal record. No connections to the corporate world. Exactly the type of candidate he had requested. He clicked on the photograph. The image slowly loaded onto the screen. The moment he saw her face, the air vanished from his lungs. His heartbeat stopped. His hand tightened around the edge of his desk. Impossible. Five years ago, he had received the call that changed everything. Five years ago, he had been told she was gone. Five years ago, he had forced himself to bury every memory connected to her because, believing otherwise, would have Destroyed him. Yet the woman staring back at him from the screen was unmistakable. The same dark eyes. The same gentle smile. The same woman he had once loved. Maya Lin. The woman who was supposed to be dead.
