CHAPTER ONE : THE GIRL WHO DREAMS
Love is like fire, An endlessly burning charade. Love is like water, It calms the mind. Amana woke up at exactly 6am that morning, she didn't even have to set an alarm. Why would she. As if this day has not been what she's been waiting for all her life. As it turns out, a job she applied for in one of the biggest publishing firm has finally sent her an email to come for an interview. What's impressive about her selection is that only one hundred people had been selected. How impressive is that? She remembered how nervous she'd been when taking the exam. She'd tried to calm her self consciously by taking deep, steady breaths. A method that a grandma had taught her. It always worked and she believed it worked perfectly that time too. As if it wasn't long enough, they simply sent her a mail about a month later saying she'd been selected for the position. That all she had to do is pass the final test which was an interview. You might be thinking this must be some high ranking executive position or something but nope, this is just a secretary's position. However, when it comes to Hardy's, there isnt anything like 'just a secretary's position. They rank almost as high as Hollywood itself so not only is the pay shockingly attractive, they command just that much attention. Needless to say that you'd almost see them in the news at one point or the other in a day. Amanda took her time in the bathroom. Her appointment is by 10am anyway, so why not. She had to come all the way to DC for the interview which she'd not expected. After all, she thought she would be working in the local office in Los Angeles. The DC thing might have been a discouraging factor if this was just one of those jobs but let's face it, this is the job! She recalled how fast she'd called her sister who lived in DC and begged her to crash at her place for a few days. Chloe had just laughed and teased her like she always did. She eventually agreed after more than a few minutes of catching up. Apparently, she and her boyfriend wouldn't even be home for the first two days. 'If Amanda's lucky, she'll meet her' she said. Amanda stepped out of the bathroom and draped a towel around her body. She hadn't packed much with her, certainly not a towel. You could tell by how extra it looked on her. Her brunette hair still dripped of water which streamed down her delicate skin. She was 5'6, which was alright in her book. It's not like she wants to be a model or anything. Her face was just what she'd gotten used to seeing, oval shaped, small nose and poised lips. She knows she's beautiful and carries herself with that confidence. What she couldn't tell really, is how incredibly beautiful she was. Since one of the easiest ways to tell how attractive one is through mingling, she never did have that in herself. She always struggled to live through any outdoor activity she had to engage in. Throughout college, she could literally count the number of parties she'd been to and yes, she always found a way to sneak out in the first hour. Yes, call it boring or whatever, but she's a stay home, library kind of girl. She loved Debbie Macomber and Twilight. She's a sucker for literature love, an absolute romantist. She's not a vegetarian but she loves life and everything in it. She spends the time to look at the sunrise and sunset. She does not believe in horoscope but she believes in fate and design. She knows that there's someone out there who understands her perfectly and she would not need to change or break herself before she finds him. She gave herself a big encouraging smile through the mirror, she needed that. Then she sat at the dresser and applied some lotion on her body. She found whatever Chloe used for her hair and applied it. It smelled nice, just like Chloe did. Oh, how much she misses her sister. She intends to stay with her a couple more days to celebrate if she gets the job. A slight shiver went straight down her spine when she imagined the possibility of her getting the job. It was very intimidating to say the least. That much was true. She packed her hair to the back and intended to leave it that way until she glanced at it in the mirror and didn't seem to like it. She repacked it such that some of it came to rest at her shoulder at the front. She also didn't like it. She squinted her eyes and pouted in a peculiar way to show her dissatisfaction. Then it hit her that she could go for a braided ponytail. Growing up, braiding had always come easy for her, and it looked professional, so why not. She braided it swiftly into two gaint ponitails and loved what she saw. Of course, it made her look quite young but that could just be the extra charm she needed anyway. She glanced at the clock and it was almost 8am. She could not afford to be late. She stood up quicy and visited the closet where she already hung a black corporation gown. It had little touches of white around the neck to make it look less dark. She particularly loved deep colors, black especially. It spoke a lot about her calm, reserved and introverted personality. She doesn't like to draw attention which makes black her go to color. She wore the dress and turned excitedly to look at herself in the mirror. It brought out her curves in a decent manner and it stopped right above her knee. It had a very short arm but it was not quite armless. Amanda smiled at herself and hurriedly went to her traveling bag. She brought out a tiny neck piece and put it on. It was dear to her so it only made sense that she would use it on this occasion. She smiled even broader now, patting the silver jewelry. She put on matching earrings too. Then she brought out a pair of shoes, black as one would expect. If there hadn't been some decorative white around her neck, her outfit might have been all black. But that was alright, it had to be. To be honest, she felt uncomfortable in other colors. She would be mindful of it, conscious of her body, making her unable to totally look past it and give her all in a supposed interview. She couldn't let that happen considering how important this was to her. She turned around, checked the back to see that it was neatly fitted. When she was done admiring herself, she put the jewelry box back as well as any other object that had found their way out of her bag. She zipped it and put it back where it was. She walked back to the dressing table and picked up her phone, there was no messages or calls. Typical day. It didn't matter, this was all that mattered. She stepped out and locked the door swiftly. She put the key under the flower pot just as Chloe had asked her to do. She walked into the morning sun, it was calming and refreshing. Then she hurried to the street and got a cab. "Hardy's" she said to him. He nodded at her and she stepped into the vehicle. He glanced her in the mirror before he stepped on the gas. At first, Amanda wondered why he did that, but it soon dawned on her that she must have looked pretty at that moment. It's true, she hadn't applied make up, almost not at all. Her face was still radiant and her skin was flawless. If she didn't know better, she'd say she'd been born rich and had everything handed to her on a platter of gold. A girl who's never worked a day in her life, what a joke. She'd never had it easy, most people never believed that. But then there was not much people to tell anyway. Still, people naturally never assumed that it had always just been her, her elder sister Chloe and their grandmother. Her presence in their life hadn't made them miss their parents much, at least not until she passed away last year. It was then that Amanda really felt what it meant to be an orphan. The cab driver occasionally glanced at her through the rear view mirror but Amanda was too busy with her thoughts to notice. She had a small smile on her face each time she thought about her grandmother. Such a sweet soul. She owed that woman everything she is today. She had an old piggy bank with which she saved up almost all the money she ever made to send both of them to college. She said she might not have anything else to give them but surely, she would give them education. It sounded like a revolutional story. Something out of literature, she was that amazing.
