CHAPTER 1: A Heartbreaking Betrayal
LAURA
It was already getting late and the streetlights cast a golden glow on the nearby night stalls, reminding me of how much I wanted to get home on time.
I swerved the car into the final street that stood between me and my husband, Kyle Morrison, the Alpha of the Black fur pack. We had tied the knot a year ago and I could still remember the way the entire pack cheered on, their eyes laced with envy and admiration, as we became one under the moonlit sky.
I looked into the sideview mirror and I adjusted the strands of my hazelnut hair the wind tousled while thinking of how I was going to glow up this evening. It was the annual banquet hosted by our pack and I had to look my best as we were going to be having a lot of guests.
I couldn't understand why, but I felt a rare tinge of excitement brewing within me. I had this strange feeling that the conflict that had existed for quite sometime between myself and Kyle will finally be resolved tonight. Something told me that the warmth I missed, the sweet texts and the goodnight kisses were going to return. It had been a while since he’d made me happy, but I understood. The problems at his company had left him worn-out and cold.
It was a little past seven when I made my last stop for the night. I had closed from work about 2 hours ago and made several stops, with the most important for last, Edward's Pastries - the best in Los Angeles. After a little chit chat with Mrs Edward, I took the box of pastries her lovely granddaughter handed me and I said my goodbyes to the family before rushing back to my car parked some distance away.
When I checked the time, I saw that it was 7:26 p.m. I had to hurry as the dinner was scheduled to begin by 9 PM sharp and I couldn't afford to make Kyle late.
With a smile on my face, I started the engine and made my way towards the pack house. As I drove, I could see many of the pack's elites dressed in gorgeous outfits and making their way in the same direction. Almost everyone was heading to the pack house for tonight’s banquet!
The car screeched to a halt at the pack house's garage and I was instantly taken aback when I saw the white Maybach I was all too familiar with parked at the porch of our house. It belonged to my best friend Mandy, and although she visited me all the time, she always made sure I was around before coming over.
I shrugged, brushing off the weird feeling in my gut and started towards the house with my bag in one hand and the box of pastries in the other. The house was quiet tonight and there was no sign of the two young maids who were always around.
I went up the stairs and found my husband, Kyle behind his study desk. His hair was a bit scattered and his face looked flushed. I glanced at his well toned abs and perfectly chiseled jaws that I so much loved caressing for a brief second before dropping the pastries on the table before him.
"Aren't you getting ready dear?" I asked as I took off my jacket.
Kyle had the usual poker face he'd been holding up for sometime now and he pursed his lips with no sign of answering me.
"Saw a lot of the elites on my way here and I thought you'd be getting ready to receive them already but - "
I spun around when I noticed that he wasn't even answering me.
"Kyle!" I frowned.
"Stop f*****g screaming Laura!" He snapped.
And just like that, all the excitement and anticipation that had been building up the whole day came crashing down.
"I've had enough of you these past few months!" He bellowed. "All you're good at is raising your voice at me!"
"I thought you'd be receiving the guests," I started to say.
"Just shut it," He snarled. "You've been nagging for weeks now and I'm sick of it already. Seems you've forgotten so quickly that you're nothing without me."
Tears flowed down my cheeks uncontrollably as I tried to understand where his outburst was coming from. I felt a whirlpool of emotions as I stared into his bloodshot eyes, very much different from the loved filled eyes that had stared back at me a year ago.
"Kyle," I called out softly, in a desperate bid to find the slightest trace of the man I had fallen in love with.
"I'm fed up," He groaned.
He rose to his feet, grabbed a document from a nearby drawer and slammed it on the table before me.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest at that moment, as I already guessed what was written on it.
"It's over Laura. Sign it." He grunted with a tone of finality.
I was still trying to wrap my head around how quickly things had gotten out of control when an inner door was pushed open. I watched, wide-eyed as my best friend, Mandy walked out through the door in a thong and with a glass of champagne in her hand.
"MANDY!" I screamed out with all the strength I could muster.
I could feel my wolf trembling in anger and I could barely resist the urge to smash her head to the wall.
Her smile spoke volumes. She stared at me, with eyes filled with ridicule before cat walking over to where Kyle sat. I watched, livid as her hands worked their way across his abs.
It was then that I realized it was all over. My best friend had stolen my husband from me under my very nose. Almost immediately, I felt a new force spreading through me. I was not going to cry over spilled milk.
I glanced across at Mandy whose eyes were filled with disdain and mockery, and at Kyle who had a frown plastered across his face, and without any further hesitation, I signed the document.
I turned on my heels and started to leave the study.
"And don't even think you're getting any part of my hard-earned wealth because you're not getting a penny," Kyle snarled after me.
Our eyes met for a second and I saw the evil grin plastered across his face.
I shook my head in self pity. If only he knew that I didn't even need his crumbs. If only he knew who I truly was.
I grabbed my car key from the bed and the next minute, I was speeding down the road, heading farther and farther away from the man who had shattered me.
The night was dark. The road stretched far in loneliness and the sky was quiet. I sped through the highway with tear filled eyes as the chilly night breeze blew against my face. My journey since coming to the Blue wind pack flashed through my mind like a movie. Falling in love with Kyle was like a dream come true but not all dreams were meant to last forever.
It was time to wake up unfortunately. It was time to go back home.
Just then, the blaring horn of an incoming trailer snapped me out of my thoughts. I snapped my head up just in time to see that it was barely a few meters away from me.
With panic surging through my veins, I swerved the wheels frantically. The car skidded down the road but the speed was too much and it crashed into a tree.
Slowly, I could feel my consciousness begin to slip away. Blood trickled down my face and I gasped for my breath, but the last thing I remembered before eventually passing out was the handsome face of my ex-husband, Kyle staring down at me through my broken window with worry in his eyes.
