Chapter 9 Finally, the harpist gave a nod to the twelve-piece band and they took the stage, playing an upbeat ethereal waltz. Couples made their way to the open dance floor at the center of the room and began to whirl in concert. I gazed wistfully at their brilliant gowns and starched linens. I’d never seen people dance like that in real life. Some of the women wore otherworldly creations, gauzy fabric swirling about their feet, while others wore more conventional ball-gowns or modern, minimal club wear like my own.
