The Rain of Eternal Regret
The sky over the Silver Moon Pack was not celebrating. Instead, it wept. Heavy, charcoal clouds hung low over the valley, lashing down a cold, relentless rain that turned the sacred Altar of the Moon into a pit of slick mud and broken dreams. Tonight was supposed to be the pinnacle of my life. Eighteen. The age of awakening. I had spent years practicing my stances, studying pack law, and dreaming of the moment my wolf would finally howl for the first time. But as I stood in the center of the ceremonial circle, the silence inside my soul was deafening. There was no stir of fur, no golden glow in my eyes, and no warmth of a shifting spirit. I was a hollow vessel, shivering in a white silk dress that now clung to my skin like a shroud. "Look at her," the whispers began, cutting through the rhythm of the rain. "Eighteen years old and still wolf-less. A 'dud' born to an Alpha line. What a waste of blood." I kept my gaze fixed on the muddy ground, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every insult felt like a physical blow. In our world, strength wasn't just a preference....it was survival. And I was proving to be the weakest link in the strongest pack in the northern territories. Please, Killian, I prayed, my eyes stinging with more than just rainwater. Don't listen to them. Remember the nights we spent under the stars. Remember your promise. Killian, the future Alpha and the man who held my heart in his hands, stepped into the circle. The crowd went silent instantly. His presence was overwhelming, a tidal wave of dominant Alpha energy that made the very air vibrate. His golden eyes, which used to look at me with a softness that made my knees weak, were now as cold and hard as polished amber. He didn't look like the boy I grew up with. He looked like a King deciding which part of his kingdom was diseased and needed to be amputated. "Kira," his voice boomed, amplified by his Alpha aura. The sheer pressure of his command forced me to my knees. The mud soaked into my dress, staining the white silk brown, but I didn't care. I only cared about the man standing over me. "The Moon Goddess provides for those who are worthy," Killian continued, his voice carrying to the very edge of the forest. "But she also tests the strength of a leader. A King cannot rule with a shadow. A wolf cannot mate with a sheep." I looked up, my vision blurred by the downpour. "Killian... please. My wolf... she's just late. Give me time." He leaned down, his face inches from mine. I could smell the rain and the scent of pine on him...the scent that used to mean 'home.' But now, it smelled like an execution. "I need a Luna who can lead an army, Kira," he whispered, his voice a lethal blade that only I could feel. "I need a woman who can stand beside me in the heat of battle, not a girl who needs a babysitter every time a rogue growls. You are a glitch in my perfect destiny. You are a weakness I can no longer afford." The betrayal was so sharp I felt my breath hitch. He wasn't just rejecting my wolf; he was rejecting me. Everything we were, every secret shared, was being traded for power. He stood tall and raised his hand toward the darkened moon. "I, Alpha Killian of the Silver Moon Pack, hereby Reject you, Kira, as my mate and my Luna!" The words hit me like a physical explosion. The 'Mate Bond'...that invisible, sacred thread that connected our souls...didn't just break. It shattered. It felt like someone had reached into my chest with a white-hot iron and ripped my heart out through my ribs. I let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing into the mud as the agony overwhelmed my senses. A burning sensation seared my collarbone, right where his mark should have formed. The rejection was so violent that blood began to seep from my nose and ears. "You are stripped of your rank!" Killian shouted, his voice devoid of any mercy. "You are banished from these lands by sunrise. From this moment on, you are nothing but a rogue. Guards! Throw this trash to the border." The pack erupted. People I had called friends, elders who had patted my head as a child, now threw stones and spat at me. "Go! Leave! We don't want a freak in our pack!" Two massive guards grabbed my arms, dragging my limp, broken body through the mud and over the jagged rocks of the path. My skin was torn, my dress was in tatters, and my soul was a scorched wasteland. They reached the edge of the Forbidden Forest...a place where even the strongest wolves feared to tread....and tossed me over the boundary line. "Enjoy the rogues, Kira," one of the guards sneered, wiping his hands on his trousers as if I were a plague. "Maybe they'll find a use for a wolf-less bitch." I lay there in the dark, the mud filling my mouth, watching the warm lights of my home fade into the distance. The cold was no longer on the outside; it had settled deep in my bones. My heart was slowing. My lungs felt like they were filled with lead. So this is it, I thought. Dying in the dirt because I wasn't 'born' right. Suddenly, the world turned deathly silent. The sound of the torrential rain vanished, replaced by a high-pitched hum that vibrated in my teeth. A strange, neon-blue glow began to seep out of the very air, illuminating the dark, twisted trees of the forest. [Ding!] A mechanical voice, cold, sharp, and strangely beautiful, echoed directly inside my mind. It didn't sound like a wolf; it sounded like a God. [Host's Vital Signs: 2% ...] [Detection of Extreme Grief and Hatred: 100% ...] [Scanning Soul Compatibility...] [Match Found: God-Slayer Leveling System Initialized.] A translucent blue screen floated in front of my fading eyes. It listed my stats, all of them pathetic '0's and '1's. But at the bottom, there were two pulsing buttons: [ACCEPT] or [DIE]. I gritted my teeth, my fingers digging into the wet earth with a sudden, primal fury. I thought of Killian's golden eyes filled with disgust. I thought of my father, the Alpha before him, who would have been ashamed of what the pack had become. "I won't die," I rasped, my voice thick with blood and bile. "I want them... to crawl. I want them all to see what a 'weakling' can do." I reached out a trembling hand and pressed [ACCEPT]. [Binding System to Host: Kira...] [Warning: Ancient Lycan Bloodline Detected (Dormant).] [Forcefully Awakening Bloodline... 1%... 2%...] An agonizing heat, a thousand times stronger than the rejection pain, surged through my veins. It felt like my blood was turning into liquid gold. My bones began to crack and reshape. [New Quest: Survive the First Hunt.] [Objective: Three Rogue Wolves are approaching your location.] [Reward: +10 Strength, +10 Agility, Unlock: 'Shadow Step' Skill.] [Failure: Permanent Death.] The bushes in front of me rustled. Three pairs of glowing red eyes emerged from the darkness. The rogues had found their dinner. But as I looked at them, I didn't feel fear. I felt a hunger that matched theirs. The System screen flashed red. [LETHAL ENCOUNTER STARTING. LEVEL UP OR DIE.]
