Waking up to light beaming down on her face, Elizabeth realised she didn't pull the curtains closed, she must have fallen asleep reading the book, she sat up and yawned, looking over at the alarm clock on her bedside table, 6.50am she stood up and went to the bathroom to wash her face, she didn't have her own bathroom so she used the one at the end of the landing, dressed only in her robe. After finishing with the bathroom, she made her way back to her room. She didn't expect to come across anyone. She assumed Mason would still be asleep and the door to James's room was still open. The room was still empty. There was a final door, that must be Jacobs room. She gently pushed the door open. This room was empty. The only thing that was in the room was a king-size bed. she closed the door and as she turned around she bumped into Mason, "morning sleepy head." said playfully.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there!" she whimpered. Honey and lavander, He closed his eyes and inhaled her scent deeply, "Breakfast is downstairs on the dinner table. If you don't like eggs, I can make you something else." He said, with a glint in his eye. He was up to something. They made their way down the stairs, Elizabeth looked down at her bare feet she had completely forgot she was in nothing buy her robe, she was embarrassed and began to blush, she turned around to head back to her room, Mason was right behind her, "Where do you think you are going?" he asked.
"I need to get dressed." she said. "I would prefer it if you got undressed." he mumbled quietly to himself, so quietly that only someone with super hearing would have heard. "Don't worry about it, after all it is just me and you, have some breakfast and then go and get changed after." he said. "Okay." Elizabeth replied innocently. She sat down at the dinner table, he brought over a plate of toast, Mason had sliced the bread into narrow slices, and the eggs were hard boiled, "Egg and soldiers coming up." he exclaimed. She hadn't noticed until now that he was wearing a white frilly apron. He noticed she was eyeing up the apron, "Didn't want to get anything spilling on my suit, plus it looks good on me." he said, winking at her.
she took the top of the egg off, it was cooked to perfection, the yolk was warm and gooey, she dipped her golden piece of toast in, and then took a bite, there was an ever so slight taste of olive, she looked up again, two pieces of toast bounced up from the toaster ready to be spread, Mason first spread the butter over the golden slices and then reached for the red jam jar he had picked up yesterday while they were out at the market. Generously spreading the toast with the seedless jam, "Strawberry is my absolute favourite." he beamed as he took a bite. He only ate a few mouthfulls before putting the rest of the slice down. He sat down again, this time beside her. I thought he said he wouldn't be eating here? she thought to herself.
"So what made you take this job?" He asked. "Well, Jacob is a good negotiator, besides the fact he is paying me well." she replied. "Jacob, a good negotiator?" Mason asked in a high-pitched voice. He sounded surprised. "He said I would be able to have the whole of December off and still be paid. I can't imagine I would find a better offer than that." she said. "He is so soft and mushy." Mason said, rolling his eyes. "Well, I am glad he is, Christmas is my favourite holiday, and I didn't want to work through it for the third year in a row." she replied. Mason sat back, realising why Jacob would let her take the whole month of December off.
"When will Dad be home?" Cried Jacob, "He is going to miss Christmas again, isn't he." Roared James, their mum turned away she could feel her eyes fill with tears of sadness. "Come on, we are going to have a great Christmas. we have cookies, and I have a present for you both, but you have to be good for mum, okay?" Mason said to his brothers. Their mum looked at her boys, first to James, then to Jacob, and finally, her eyes met with Masons. She could feel her eyes welling up, this time from pride. It was Christmas eve and their father was away working, he was repaired carts and carriages, he worked for the royal family, they owned the caste, and lived there, their father was often called away to travel with the royal family just incase something went wrong with the carriage, then he would be there to fix it. He was paid well, and the job provided them with security. The cottage that they lived in was owned and maintained by the royal family.
"Time for bed," their mum called out. Her tears had vanished, something she had mastered. She was getting used to the family being apart. Mason helped their mum tuck the twins into bed, "Can we stay together tonight?" Asked Jacob, "Okay sweetheart," their mum said. They all walked to the master bedroom. She tucked her three boys into bed and layed by their side, James on her left, Jacob in her right, and Mason furthest right behind Jacob. The boys fell asleep pretty quickly, this was due to the busy day they had, snow angels, tree climbing and sword fighting eachother using the wooden swords their farther hand carved for each of then the Christmas before, it was a shame he wasn't able to give them to the boys in person as he was away working but their mum got to see the boys faces light up as she handed then each their own individual wooden sword, their father had been teaching then how to wield them all year and this year he spent his time off in the stables, the boys assumed it was new swords but it was something else, their mum waited for the boys to fall asleep and headed outside to retrieve the gifts their father had been working on, three wooden shields, the round one was for Jacob, it was the smallest like Jacob, the square one was for James and the largest one, a diamond shape, with Masons name carved in the side seemed to have the greatest detail, each one hand carved, decorated and painted by their loving father, her plan was to put the gifts beside the two others Mason had wrapped up earlier, he was gifting his brothers a book each, she smiled at the thought, she was excited to see the look of the boys faces, she loved Christmas. She loved her boys.
While the three boys were fast asleep, their mother trapesed through the snow, back to the family home, she could hear a horse in the distance there were two men on a single horse drawing nearer she tried to get back as quickly as possible but before she reached the door, one of the men hopped of the horse, he was dressed in rags and body was stocky, "do you know the way to town?" The man asked. "Back the way you came." She replied, something felt sinister about these two men. He began to walk closet, "What are you doing out her all alone?" The other man asked. "I am not alone my husband is in the stables I am fetching him a drink, The first man was now right in front of her he was even bigger than he looked initially, he grabbed her arm, she dropped the wooden shields and attacked her. When they had enough, they left her in the snow, cold to the touch. They quickly got back on their horse and rode off, unsure of whether someone had heard them, they didn't want to take any chances.
Morning came, and the boys woke up. Their mother was not in bed. She was downstairs making breakfast for the three boys, or so they thought. they looked but they couldn't find their mother anywhere, perhaps she was out feeding the horses, Mason opened the door, the cold air hit his face, he looked down, and then fell to the groun, his mother was lying there in the snow, he ordered his brothers to go upstairs but they refused, making their way to the door in a panic. The three boys pulled their mother into the warmth. She was stone cold, It was too late for her. This was the last time any of the boys celebrated Christmas. This was the last time the boys would ever see their mother.
