"Hello, Maive." Elizabeth said as she sat up and set the book down, Mason must have let her back in. She looked up at the clock, not realising how much time had passed. She found it easy to get lost in a good book. Exiting the study, she was welcomed to the smell of dinner, tomato, basil, and rosemary, her stomach growled, she hadn't eaten anything since breakfast.
She made her way through to the kitchen and took out the jar of chicken meat in the fridge and scooped some in to maive's bowl, placing the rest of the jar back in the fridge, she sat at the dinner table and Mason returned to the room from the back door, he must have been in the greenhouse he was sweaty and smelled earthy, "I baked that pie you spoke about in the car, I just picked some mint from the greenhouse, we have alot of herbs growing in there If you ever need any." She placed her hand on the back of her head and smiled, "Thank you, Mason." was all she managed to muster. Is this man bipolar? he dropped a few leafs in to a glass jug of freshly squeezed lemonade and set it on the table, he turned around and grabbed two wine glasses, and poured the golden liquid in to the glasses, once poured he handed one to Elizabeth and grabbed two dinner plates.
"Should we wait for Mr Lock, um. Should we wait for James?" It felt strange working for the brothers, she had only ever worked for one family before, An old couple, they never had children so it was just Mr and Mrs Keston and Elizabeth for the last two years, Elizabeth was still getting familiar with all of the changes, usually quick at adjusting Elizabeth felt disoriented when she was around any of the Lock brothers, they all had something about them that felt so hazey and alluring, she had never felt like this before. "No, he won't be back tonight, something come up last minute... so I will have to do it for company tonight, I hope you are not too disappointed." he replied.
"Not at all." she exclaimed, there was something specifically about him that made her feel at ease that evening, they sat opposite eachother and ate, his cooking was delicious, he was very talented, perhaps he was a chef or he was brought up cooking, either way the food he had presented was moorish. "That was wonderful." she said as she ate the last bite. "It was my mothers recipe." he said as he smiled at the compliment and stood up to take the dishes away, he placed them in the sink and began to wash up, "Oh, no, wait Mason, I can do that, after all, that is why I'm here!" she called to him, she stood up abruptly. "It's fine, I want you to go back to that book you were reading. You seemed to be enjoying it." How did he know, how could he could he possibly know what I am thinking? perhaps It's was an assumption? She desperately wanted to ask him what he meant by his comment, she looked up at him with questioning eyes, eyebrows raised in confusion, "Your n*****s were hard when you came through." he said with a grin on his face. " I was cold! I had just let the cat in through the window and the breeze caught me off guard!" she exclaimed in embarrassment. " Either way, I won't complain." his grin turning in to a smoulder, does he think he is charming? he is so confusing! one momenthe is a gentleman. the next he is plain rude! I really need this job, I can't just quit, it pays too well! I am just going to have to out up with him, it's just words after all, she thought to ber self.
She couldn't believe how quick a perfect evening could be tainted. He seemed to have a habbit of saying all the right things and then ruining it all with something stupid. She went in to the study and picked the book she had been reading back up, she held it close to her face and carried on reading. She looked up over the top of the book, Mason was sat back at the table, this time in the seat facing her, watching her with a small smirk, his head resting in his right hand, the other on the table. she looked down again and carried on reading, she looked back up he was in the room with her, he managed to get so close to her without her hearing him, he was so quick, add ninja to the list of potential jobs, she thought to herself. She watched as he reached up to a book on the top shelf, he wiped away the dust, looks like it hasn't been touched in years, a bit like me, she chuckled to her self quietly. he looked over at her, he had incredible hearing and the sound of ber chuckle sparked a fire inside him, it was so pleasing, their eyes met, they both had the same exact thought, what is going on behind those eyes?
He realised her little chuckle made his soldier want to stand to attention, it was somewhere between cute and sexy, he was pulled in by her smell again, lavander and honey, he placed the book on the table and said "I recommend this one when you finish that." with a quick glance before looking back at all the books seemingly in admiration, "It took me a quite a few years to gather this collection." he murmured. The books were his?
She felt an entity brush up against her ankle, she sat up in shock, it was Maive, It might take some time getting use to all of these changes, she thought to her self. "Are you okay?" Mason asked sounding somewhat concerned, "Like you actually care." the words cascaded out of her mouth before her brain could comprehend what might happen next she sharply stood up "I am sorry! I didn't..." "don't worry about it, I like a bit of sass now and then, if you haven't noticed, it's kind of my thing." he said in a smug tone. This whole time he was trying to be sassy? Who does he think he is? A teenage girl? She chuckled at her own thoughts and looked back at him, there it was again he thought to himself as ge grew harder. His eyes locked on to her lips, he noticed how she had a loose strand of hair was close to her mouth, he reached towards it, tucking the rogue hair behind her ear.
Do you like to dance? He asked. Bipolar, she thought to herself as she chuckled again, a word she had decided to reclaim, Her mother was hot and cold and for most of her childhood she never know which version she was coming home too, so to be able to laugh about it now seemed to be her way of clawing back some control. "No. I don't like to dance." she said, "But I would like to take this book to my room and continue reading it up there if that is okay with you?" It sounded a little bit sassy, she had a smile on her face, she decided she would loosen up, what's the harm being being a little playful now and then. "go for it." he replied with a smile on his face.
As she made her way through the kitchen towards the stairs she saw a mouse on the floor, it was barely moving, she gasped kneeling to the floor she scooped up the little mouse, Maive must have left the poor creatures there, Mason came in scooped the little mouse out of her hands and in to his, I will take care of it, Elizabeth knew not to ask a question she didn't want to know the answer too, she knew the kindest thing to do would be to relinquish his pain, buy she wouldn't have been able to do so, It was a good job he was there. Her eyes welled up a little with tears, she made her way up the stairs and gave maive A side eye, giving the black cat a swift look of disapoval as she climbed the stairs making her way to her room for the night. She was reluctant to close her eyes as the vivid image if the poor mouse flashed in to her head, shook her hair and closed her eyes this time managing to fall asleep.
