CHAPTER 3 I care about you, Sophia. I want to protect your dreams, not crush them.” “Seriously?" She replied, her heart filling with joy at his words. You'd do that for me? “Of course. You mean so much more to me than just a transaction (business deal), he stated, moving in closer. “As long as we are by each other's side, I will stand up for your freedom.” Before she could have a chance to reply, the door burst open once more, and JAMESON walked in, an arrogant smirk on his face “What’s this? A heart-to-heart? How sweet,” he said mockingly. Alexander stepped forward, a protective stance taking over. “Stay out of this, Jameson. You do not detect what happens in our life, for goodness sake.” “Sorry to disappoint you,” I do, he resorted, his toon laced with threats. “ You have to understand that marriage isn't solely about the two of you. It's about control and I plan to influence who receives what.” “Power?” Sophia interjected, anger bubbling to the surface. “You think this is some game? I’m not a trophy to be fought over.” Jameson chuckled darkly. “You might perceive it like that at the moment, but you will come to realize it soon. This isn't about affection, sweetheart. It's about survival.” He turned and left after that, while the door slamming shut behind him, echoing in the sudden silence that followed. Sophia felt bad by a deep ocean of words flooding out from his mouth. "Could he be right? Am I just a piece in this game?" “Not,” Alexander said firmly, his hand reaching for hers. “You’re more than that. We’ll find a way to turn this around. I promise you.” As the tension hung in the air, Sophia’s resolve strengthened. “Then let’s do it. Let’s fight back.” “NO.” Alexander replied. As the days turned into a whirlwind of activity, Sophia found herself transforming from a wide -eyes ingenue to a poised and confident player, her initial hesitation giving way to a growing sense of determination and purpose, but despite the facade of calm she presented to the world, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was merely a role, and that the real Sophia was trapped beneath the surface, waiting to be set free. One evening, while getting ready for a charity gala, Sophia faced the mirror, tweaking her sophisticated dress. “Do I look okay?” she inquired glancing at ALEXANDER. “You look gorgeous” he responded, his toon brimming with admiration. “But keep in mind, this isn't merely a gala, It’s a battlefield.” “Right.” her eyes drifted downward as she tries to process her next step. “But I want you to trust me that I can handle this.” As they reached the gala, the vibe was electric. The lavish ballroom was decorated with luxurious embellishments, and the air resonated with laughter and conversation, Sophia was so nervous as she entered. The body of expectation was heavy on her body and soul. “Don't forget,” ALEXANDER murmured, leaning in closer, "We are in this together no matter what happens.” Sophia nodded, her resolve solidifying. As they interacted with the guest, she sensed the scrutiny of the elite upon her, evaluating her value. She spotted JAMESON across the room, his stare sharp and focused, observing every move they made. “Ah, the future Mrs. Steele,” he said, appearing at her side with a charming yet sinister smile. “You look lovely tonight. Ready to play your part?” “Jameson,” she acknowledged coolly, trying to mask the unease creeping into her voice. “Don’t let my words scare you,” he continued, leaning in slightly. “Just remember, in this world, appearances matter. You’ll need to impress the right people if you want to thrive.” “Or maybe I’ll just be myself,” Sophia shot back, surprising herself with her boldness. Jameson chuckled, a glint of amusement in his eyes. “That’s cute. But in this game, ‘yourself’ may not be enough.” Just then, ALEXANDER returned, placing a protective hand on her back. “He remarked, I believe it's time for us to socialize somewhere else, his voice making it clear that there was no room for further discussion. As they walked away, Sophia leaned closer to ALEXANDER. “His impossible, she said, frustration bubbling just below the surface.” I understand, ALEXANDER said, his jaw clenched “But we’ll outsmart him. He underestimates you, and that’s his mistake.” As the night went on, they moved through discussions with important guests, with ALEXANDER by her side, showing her how to connect And make a memorable impact. Gradually, Sophia started to feel more at ease, her confidence building with every conversation. When they stopped to catch their breath in a calmer part of the ballroom, Sophia gazed up at ALEXANDER, her heart pounding with the excitement of the evening and the bond they were gradually forming. “I appreciate you believing in me, she said earnestly.” “It’s easy to believe in someone as talented and strong as you,” he replied, his gaze intense. “You’re more than just a pretty face in this world. You have the potential to change it.” Just as she was about to reply, a ruckus broke out near the middle of the room, SOPHIA and ALEXANDER shared an anxious look and pushed their way true to the crowd. In the middle of the chaotic moment stood Jameson; he was confidently handling the microphone with a smirk playing on his lips. Everyone, let's lift our glasses in the blossom celebration of the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Steel! He declared, his toon laced with sarcasm. “May their union be as prosperous as it is… entertaining.” Sophia's heart sank as laughter echoed around her, she glanced at ALEXANDER, whose face had hardened in a serious mask. “I never expected the evening to turn out like this,” he muttered under his breath. “I want us to take control,” Sophia said, her determination rising. “We can’t let him undermine us like this.” “Are you sure?” Alexander asked, his brows furrowing in concern. The next part, it's so shocking.
