Chapter 3

The entrance is incredibly snug. Squeezing into the narrow doorway, your body is pressed completely against Kaelen's broad chest. You can feel the rapid thrum of his heartbeat and the heat radiating off him from the frantic walk up the stairs. He lets out a low, confident chuckle right against your ear, the vibration sending a shiver down your spine. "Don't get too comfortable, apothecary," he teases in a rough whisper. But the vault isn't a room. The pathway doesn't end. Instead, it morphs into a narrow, cave-like corridor, carved directly into the living rock beneath the foundry. It is pitch black. The darkness is so absolute that you can barely see your own hand in front of your face. You have to navigate purely by touch, keeping one hand flat against the cold, damp rock wall to guide your steps, with Kaelen's hand resting firmly on your shoulder from behind so you don't lose each other. For five minutes—which feels like an absolute eternity in the suffocating silence—you shuffle forward. Then, a faint, ethereal glow appears in the distance. You both quicken your pace, stepping out of the tight tunnel. Your breath hitches. "Where are we?" you gasp in absolute awe. The tunnel has opened up into a massive, breath taking underground cavern. Massive, crystalline stalagmites protrude from the cavern floor like frozen stone towers, reflecting a soft, luminescent blue light that seems to emanate from a subterranean river running through the centre of the cave. The air here is crisp, clean, and completely removed from the filth of the docks above. Kaelen steps up beside you, his jaw slightly slack as he looks around the hidden world. "I... I had no idea this was under the foundry," he admits, his confident demeanour vanishing for a moment, replaced by genuine shock. "The captain must have found this cavern months ago." Suddenly, his eyes lock onto a stone pedestal rising out of the water near the centre of the cave. Resting on top of it, glowing with a faint, pulsing golden light that pushes back the blue luminescence, is a velvet-lined box. Your apothecary artefact. But as you take a step forward, a low, rumbling growl echoes from the shadows behind the stalagmites, and the water in the river begins to violently ripple. You instinctively step closer to him, your shoulder pressing against his arm as the low, guttural vibration rattles the stones beneath your leather boots. "Kaelen... what's going on...?" you whisper, your grey eyes darting wildly across the shifting shadows of the stalagmites. Kaelen’s confident facade drops instantly. His arm moves in front of you in a protective blur, shielding your body with his own as his moss-green eyes scan the dark edges of the subterranean river. The water is churning now, frothing against the stone pedestal where your artefact rests. "I don't know," Kaelen mutters, his voice dropping to a harsh, tense whisper. He reaches down and draws a long, wicked elven blade from his belt, the steel catching the eerie blue glow of the cave. "The crew... they muttered stories about a 'guardian' the captain found down here, but I thought it was just campfire nonsense to keep people from stealing the hoard." The growl echoes again, louder this time, bouncing off the cavern walls until it sounds like it’s coming from everywhere at once. Suddenly, the water explodes upward. A massive, serpentine creature rises from the river, its scales a glistening, dark obsidian that reflects the pulsing golden light of your artefact. Its eyes glow an angry, sulphurous yellow, and its jagged jaws snap shut with a sound like a cracking whip. It looms over the pedestal, its gaze locking onto the two intruders. Kaelen doesn't flinch, but his grip tightens on his sword until his knuckles turn white. He glances back at you, a dangerous, breathless grin cutting through his tension. "Well, gold-locks," he says, his deep voice laced with adrenaline. "It looks like your artefact has a bodyguard. I'll distract it. You make a run for the pedestal. Can you do that?" Before he can play the hero and throw himself into danger for your benefit, you move. You aren’t a damsel waiting to be saved, and you certainly aren’t going to let this elf take all the risks. You snatch your dagger from its holster with a lethal flick of your wrist and sprint straight toward the monster. Kaelen shouts your name in pure panic—"Iris, no!"—but you’re already a blur of gold hair and leather. As the obsidian serpent rears back to strike, you commit to a swift, tactical move. Dropping low, you slide on your side across the slick, wet cavern floor, skimming right past the stone pedestal. As you pass underneath the beast's towering underbelly, you drive your dagger upward with all your might. SKRRRRT. The blade bites deep, slicing a jagged, severe laceration across the soft under-scales of the serpent's belly. Viscous, glowing green blood spray across the stone as the creature lets out a deafening, agonizing shriek that shakes dust from the cavern ceiling. It thrashes violently, heavily injured by your lightning-fast strike. Your slide carries you to the opposite side of the pedestal, and you bounce back to your feet, panting, your dagger dripping with monster blood. Across the cavern, Kaelen is staring at you, his mouth slightly open in absolute, stunned disbelief. He lets out a breathless, booming laugh, his moss-green eyes burning with a mix of shock and pure adrenaline. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, apothecary!" The serpent twists mid-air, its sulphurous yellow eyes locking onto you with newfound, blinding rage. It rears back, ignoring Kaelen entirely, preparing to crush you into the stone. You are right next to the pedestal now, and the velvet-lined box containing your artefact is within arm's reach. You snatch the velvet-lined box from the pedestal. Without a second thought, you pivot and hurl the glowing artefact across the cavern straight at Kaelen, proving the absolute trust you've now placed in him. Kaelen’s eyes widen as the pulsing golden box flies through the air. He leaps forward, catching it securely against his chest. He looks up at you, a mixture of fierce respect and sheer terror in his eyes as he realizes what you’ve just done. "Iris, what are you doing?!" he roars. You don't answer. You turn on the heel of your leather boots and run with all your might in the opposite direction, intentionally making yourself the bait. The strategy works too well. Enraged by the pain in its belly, the obsidian serpent lets out a guttural hiss and thrashes after you, its massive body scraping against the cavern floor with terrifying speed. You sprint toward the edge of the cavern, but the slick, uneven terrain betrays you. You reach a dead end—a sheer wall of jagged rock. You spin around, your back pressed against the cold stone. You are cornered. The beast rears up, looming directly over you. Its sulphurous yellow eyes glow with malice as it recoils its massive upper body, muscles tensing like a giant spring, ready to launch a fatal strike that will crush you into the rock face. You grip your dagger, your chest heaving, bracing for the impact. Suddenly, a shadow streaks across the luminescent blue light of the cave. "Hey! Over here, you overgrown worm!" Kaelen yells. He has safely stowed your artefact. He is scaling one of the massive stalagmites right beside the creature's head, his elven blade raised high, his moss-green eyes blazing with desperation to get to you. massive flush of relief pours over you at the sound of Kaelen's voice. The beast's sulphurous yellow eyes flicker, its massive head turning slightly toward the distraction. In that split second, a completely insane idea sparks in your mind. Before the serpent can fully commit to Kaelen, you launch yourself off the jagged rock wall and wrap your arms and legs around the back of its thick, obsidian-scaled neck. The creature goes wild. Realizing a parasite is clinging to its blind spot, it begins thrashing its massive body violently against the cavern walls, trying to smash you into pulp. The world spins in a blur of blue and golden light. You hold on for dear life, your fingers clawing into the seams of its scales, your muscles burning with every brutal shudder of the beast. Suddenly, the serpent rears back, its head elevating high into the air, perfectly level with the top of the stalagmite where Kaelen is perched. This is your only shot. With a fierce battle cry, you let go. You scramble up the final few inches of its thrashing head and launch yourself into the open air. You fly across the cavern chasm, arms outstretched, leaping straight toward Kaelen—hoping, praying, and trusting with everything you have left that he will catch you. Kaelen’s eyes go impossibly wide. He drops his sword instantly, the blade clattering against the stone, and dives forward, extending his long arms over the precipice of the stalagmite. SMACK. The collision is brutal, knocking the wind completely out of your lungs. His powerful arms wrap securely around your waist, his chest absorbing the massive momentum of your jump. The force of the impact sends you both skidding backward across the narrow stone platform. For a terrifying second, you wobble on the edge of the drop. But Kaelen digs his leather boots into the rock, twisting his body to shield yours, and hauls you both safely into the centre of the structure. You collapse together in a tangled heap of limbs, leather, and damp blonde hair. Kaelen is breathing in ragged, frantic gasps, his arms still locked around you like a vice. He buries his face into your shoulder for a brief, trembling second before pulling back to look at you, his moss-green eyes wide with a mix of absolute fury and dizzying relief. "Are you completely out of your mind?!" he roars over the sound of the enraged serpent below, though his hands are gently cupping your face, checking you for injuries. "You jumped! You actually jumped!" "I told you... I'm very skilled," you say gently but amusingly, your voice breathless and ragged as you try to catch your breath. A faint, triumphant smirk tugs at the corner of your lips despite the adrenaline still coursing through your veins. Kaelen stares at you, utterly speechless for a beat. The sheer audacity of your comment in the middle of a monster-infested cavern seems to short-circuit his brain. Then, a slow, disbelieving smile breaks across his face, and he lets out a rich, breathless laugh that echoes against the stone walls. "Skilled? You're a lunatic!" he murmurs, his deep voice humming with an intensity that matches the pulsing artefact in his vest. His hands are still cupping your face, his thumb gently brushing against your wind-bitten cheek. The warmth of his touch is a stark contrast to the damp chill of the cave. For a fleeting second, the chaos around you fades, his moss-green eyes searching yours with a heat that has nothing to do with the forge above. SCREECH! The serpent’s enraged shriek shatters the moment. Below your perch, the beast slams its massive body against the base of the stalagmite, making the stone pillar groan and vibrate beneath you. Kaelen reluctantly releases your face and grabs his discarded sword, pulling you up with him in one fluid motion. He looks down at the thrashing monster, then back toward the dark exit tunnel across the cavern. "As much as I'd love to sit here and admire your 'skills,' we need to leave. Now," Kaelen says, his dangerous, confident smirk returning. He tightly grips your hand, his fingers locking with yours. "The tunnel back to the foundry is too narrow for it to follow. On my mark, we run. Ready?" "My artefact!" "I have it!" Kaelen yells back over the deafening roars of the serpent. With his free hand, he taps his vest, where the distinct, heavy shape of the velvet-lined box is securely tucked away, pulsing with its faint golden light. "I told you, I wasn't letting it go!" The stalagmite beneath your feet gives a terrifying shudder as the serpent rams it again, a massive crack splintering up the stone base. "Now run!" Kaelen barks.
