But as Adrian begins noticing the woman he once ignored, hidden lies surrounding his past slowly surface. Before he can uncover the truth, Elena gives birth and disappears with their son.

Five years later, Adrian meets Noah and regret sets in. And when the truth about Vanessa's betrayal finally comes out, Adrian realizes Elena was the only woman who ever truly loved him. Now he must earn the forgiveness of the wife he once threw away.

His First Love Came Home
Elena's POV They say you can feel it in your bones when a marriage is truly over. Mine came with the sound of the front door closing, no goodbye, no suitcase, just my husband walking out and leaving a rosemary chicken to burn in the oven. It came when the front doors opened again and Adrian returned with his first love. Vanessa hadn't changed. Her heels were higher than mine, her dress cost more than my monthly budget, and her hair fell like she'd never left, like absence looked good on her. Just as beautiful. Still impossible to compete with. The worst part was that she was my stepsister. And judging by the luggage the driver was unloading, she wasn't here for a visit. She was here to stay. I swallowed the knot in my throat as Vanessa's gaze traveled over me, lingering on the flour on my forearm before meeting my eyes. "Looks like someone isn't happy to see me." She chuckled, tossing her hair. I forced a smile. "I'm just surprised. When did you get in?" "This morning." Her eyes shifted toward Adrian. "He came to pick me up." My fingers tightened around the kitchen towel. Adrian Kingsley didn't pick people up from the airport. In five years of marriage, I could count the times he'd bothered to remember where I was. Yet Vanessa had barely landed before my husband was waiting for her like a man who'd been counting the days. I looked at Adrian. He stood near the entrance in his black suit, expression unreadable. He didn't look at me. Not once. "Adrian," I said quietly. His eyes finally met mine. "Vanessa will be staying here for a while." "Here?" "Yes." I glanced at the luggage. At least ten large bags. "That looks like more than a while." Vanessa laughed. "Don't be so dramatic, Elena. I had to bring my things." She walked past me as though the house belonged to her, as though I hadn't spent five years learning which stair creaked, which cabinet door stuck, where Adrian stood when he needed to think. My mother had always preferred Vanessa. I had always been the quiet daughter, the one who cleaned up everyone else's mess. I'd never understood why Adrian had chosen me, until tonight. "Where should I put my things?" Vanessa asked. Adrian didn't hesitate. "Second floor. The pink room." My stomach dropped. The pink room was directly across from our bedroom. "You're putting her there?" Adrian's jaw tightened. "It's temporary." Vanessa smiled when she said his name. "Thank you, Adrian." The intimacy in her voice belonged to someone who had loved him before I ever did. I looked between them. "Can we talk?" Adrian's expression hardened. "Not now." "Then when?" "After dinner." I almost laughed. Dinner. The dinner he'd walked away from three hours ago. The dinner I'd prepared because today was our fifth wedding anniversary. Five years. And he couldn't even remember that much. I'd bought fresh rosemary this morning because I remembered him saying his grandmother used to cook with it. He hadn't remembered the anniversary. Or perhaps he had. Vanessa glanced toward the dining room. "Oh, you cooked?" "Yes." "What did you make?" "Rosemary chicken." Her smile widened. "Adrian's favorite." My heart sank. Vanessa stepped closer to him, her hand resting on his sleeve. "You still like it, right?" Adrian glanced at her. "I do." Five years of learning how he liked his noodles, remembering which foods he hated, knowing when he wanted silence. And she knew his favorite dish without asking. "Dinner's getting cold," I whispered. Adrian looked at me. For one brief second, his eyes softened almost like he was remembering something. Then the distance returned. "I'm not hungry," he said, and turned toward the staircase. Vanessa followed him. I watched them disappear upstairs together, her laughter echoing long after they were gone. I didn't know what frightened me more that she had returned, or that Adrian seemed happy to have her home. By nine that evening, I was still sitting alone at the dining table. The rosemary chicken had gone cold. The candles had burned down to stubs, wax pooling onto the cream linen tablecloth I'd bought for tonight. Now it looked like something dead. The house was silent in that heavy way that makes you realize you're truly alone. Adrian hadn't come downstairs. Neither had Vanessa. I stared at the empty chair opposite me, at the place setting I'd arranged so carefully this morning. For years I'd told myself his silence didn't mean he didn't care, that his distance was just how he showed love. But sitting here in the dying candlelight, I couldn't hide from the truth anymore. Maybe he'd never loved me at all. Footsteps came from upstairs. Adrian entered the dining room alone, his tie loosened, his expression exhausted. He stopped when he saw me at the table. "You're still awake." "I was waiting." "For what?" I looked at him. "For you." Then he looked away. "There's something we need to discuss." My heart began beating faster. "What?" He placed a black folder in front of me. I stared at it. "What's that?" "Open it." My hands had gone cold. I slowly opened the folder. The first page stared back at me. PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE. My breath caught. I looked up at him. "You're divorcing me?" His eyes met mine. "Yes." "Why?" He said nothing. I let out a small, broken laugh. "Is this because Vanessa came back?" His silence answered me. My chest tightened. "After five years?" I pushed the folder away. "Just tell me the truth." His jaw clenched. "I should have ended this marriage a long time ago." I stared at the man I'd loved for five years. At the small scar above his eyebrow. At the face I'd traced with my fingers in the dark, thinking that one day, he would finally see me. Then something slipped from the folder and landed on the table, a handwritten note, folded twice. I knew that handwriting. The careful loops, the precise spacing. It belonged to my mother. My fingers trembled as I picked it up and unfolded it. One sentence, written in her script: "Elena must never know why Adrian really married her". My blood ran cold. I looked up. Adrian had gone pale. For the first time, the cold Adrian Kingsley looked genuinely afraid. I pulled the note closer, reading it again. Once. Twice. The words didn't change. "What does my mother know about our marriage?" My voice sounded hollow. He reached for the paper. I pulled it away. "Don't." "Elena, give me that." "No." His expression changed. "Please." I had never heard fear in Adrian's voice before. My eyes dropped back to the note. Why would my mother have written this? Why would she warn Adrian to keep the truth from me? What did it have to do with the marriage I'd spent five years trying to save? I looked at my husband. He didn't answer. And that was when I realized something far more terrifying than Vanessa's return. She hadn't just come home by accident. Maybe she came home because the secret was finally ready to be exposed.
