Chapter One: The Whisper Beneath the Light
I never believed in magic—at least not the real kind. I believed in distractions: screens that glowed in the dark, music that drowned out silence, conversations that kept me from myself. But that changed the night the lights went out, and I met my shadow for the first time. It began subtly. At first, I noticed it wasn’t syncing with my movements exactly. While I brushed my teeth, it hesitated just a fraction too long. When I yawned, it didn’t follow. I chalked it up to fatigue. Maybe my mind was playing tricks. But that night, as the streetlamps flickered through my apartment window and the city quieted down, I stood before my bathroom mirror and froze. My shadow didn’t. It tilted its head as if curious. I didn’t move. “Hello,” it said. I dropped the toothbrush. The sound of it clattering into the sink snapped something in me, and I stumbled backward, nearly knocking over the hamper. “Who’s there?” I whispered, my heart hammering. “Just me,” the voice replied. Calm. Familiar. It sounded like me, only... older. Wiser. Like the echo of something I had forgotten long ago. I stared at the mirror. My reflection looked as shocked as I felt. But the shadow? It was smiling. “I’ve been waiting,” it continued. “You finally slowed down enough to hear me.” I backed out of the bathroom, flipping every switch I could find. The lights flared. The shadow obeyed again. It moved in sync, like it always had. I didn’t sleep that night. By morning, I convinced myself it had been a dream—too many late nights and too much coffee. But the next evening, just before sunset, it returned. It waited for the right moment—when the angle of the light turned everything golden and strange. That’s when it slipped out again, just slightly off. “You're not crazy,” it said before I could deny it. “Then what are you?” I asked. It stepped forward, even though I hadn't moved. “I’m the part of you you’ve ignored. The piece that sees what you pretend not to. Your instinct. Your past. Your truth.” I wanted to run. But part of me didn’t want to. Part of me was hungry for answers. “Why now?” I asked. The shadow leaned closer, elongating across the hardwood floor like it was trying to reach me. “Because something’s coming. And you’ll need me.”
