DANIEL & AMARA'S BEDROOM — MORNING Soft morning sunlight enters through the curtains. AMARA, seven months pregnant, is still asleep. Beside her, DANIEL quietly gets out of bed. He looks at her, smiles, and carefully pulls the blanket over her shoulder. He is about to leave when— AMARA Daniel... He freezes. DANIEL You're awake? Amara slowly opens her eyes. AMARA Where are you going? DANIEL Kitchen. AMARA Why? DANIEL I'm going to cook. Amara laughs softly. AMARA You? DANIEL Yes, me. AMARA The last time you cooked, I almost called the fire service. Daniel places his hand on his chest, pretending to be offended. DANIEL Wow. Seven months pregnant and already disrespecting your husband. AMARA I'm protecting our unborn child. They both laugh. Daniel walks over and kneels beside her. He gently places his hand on her stomach. DANIEL Good morning, little one. Amara watches him. DANIEL Daddy is going to make breakfast. He pauses. DANIEL But your mother has already started bullying me. AMARA Don't listen to him. Daniel smiles. DANIEL You know what? AMARA What? DANIEL I think this baby already knows your voice. Amara smiles. AMARA You think so? DANIEL I know so. He kisses her stomach. DANIEL And when you finally come out, Daddy will teach you everything. AMARA Everything? DANIEL Everything. AMARA Even how to annoy your mother? Daniel grins. DANIEL Especially that. Amara throws a pillow at him. Daniel laughs and runs toward the door. DANIEL Breakfast! AMARA Don't burn my food! DANIEL I heard that! Amara smiles. For a moment, everything is perfect. FADE OUT. --- SCENE 2 — THE DREAM INT. KITCHEN — MORNING Daniel stands over the stove. The kitchen is a mess. Amara slowly walks in. She looks at the food. Then at Daniel. Then back at the food. AMARA Daniel... DANIEL Don't say anything. AMARA I haven't said anything. DANIEL Your face has already said enough. She laughs. Daniel serves the food. Amara sits. DANIEL Eat. AMARA You made all this? DANIEL Yes. AMARA You didn't poison it? DANIEL Amara! She laughs. They eat together. After a moment, Amara becomes quiet. Daniel notices. DANIEL What's wrong? AMARA Nothing. DANIEL You stopped smiling. She looks at him. AMARA I'm just thinking. DANIEL About? Amara places her hand over her stomach. AMARA Our baby. Daniel smiles. DANIEL What about our baby? AMARA I've imagined this moment so many times. DANIEL Me too. Daniel enters carrying a small shopping bag behind his back. Amara follows. AMARA What's inside that bag? DANIEL Nothing. AMARA Daniel. DANIEL I said nothing. She reaches for it. Daniel pulls it away. AMARA Give me! They playfully struggle. She finally gets it. She opens the bag. Inside is a tiny pair of baby shoes. Amara stares at them. Her eyes fill with tears. AMARA Daniel... DANIEL I saw them and couldn't resist. She holds the shoes against her chest. AMARA They're beautiful. Daniel watches her. DANIEL One day, our baby will wear them. Amara sits beside the crib. She looks around the room. AMARA I want our child to grow up knowing love. Daniel sits beside her. DANIEL Our child will. AMARA No matter what? DANIEL No matter what. LIVING ROOM — NIGHT Daniel is watching television. Amara walks in carrying a bowl of fruit. AMARA Move. DANIEL Where? AMARA That's my seat. DANIEL You've been sitting there for two hours. AMARA Because it's comfortable. DANIEL Then sit beside me. She sits. A few seconds pass. AMARA You're sitting on my side. Daniel looks at her. DANIEL You just said you wanted to sit beside me. AMARA I changed my mind. Daniel laughs. DANIEL Pregnancy has changed you. Amara pretends to be angry. AMARA So I'm disturbing you? DANIEL No. He turns off the television. DANIEL You're my whole world. Amara's expression softens. DANIEL You and this baby. He places his hand on her stomach. DANIEL Nothing will ever change that. Amara looks at him. Daniel holds her hand. A NURSE approaches. NURSE Mrs. Amara? They stand. AMARA Yes. NURSE The doctor will see you now. They enter. --- INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE — CONTINUOUS The DOCTOR examines Amara's file. DOCTOR Seven months. Daniel smiles. DANIEL Seven beautiful months. The doctor smiles politely. DOCTOR Everything looks normal. Amara exhales with relief. AMARA Thank God. The doctor closes the file. For a brief moment, his eyes linger on Amara's name. DOCTOR Make sure you come back for your next appointment. DANIEL Of course. They leave. The doctor watches them disappear down the corridor. His expression changes. A second hospital worker enters. WORKER Doctor? The doctor turns. DOCTOR What? The worker lowers his voice. WORKER The other patient is still unconscious. The doctor's face becomes serious. DOCTOR I know. WORKER Her husband is asking questions. The doctor looks toward the corridor. DOCTOR We'll deal with it. CUT. --- SCENE 6 — SEVEN MONTHS OF HAPPINESS MONTAGE — VARIOUS DAYS — Daniel massages Amara's swollen feet. — Amara laughs as Daniel struggles to assemble a baby toy. — They shop for baby clothes. — Daniel talks to Amara's stomach while she laughs. — They argue playfully over baby names. — Daniel secretly records Amara sleeping. — Amara catches him. AMARA Are you recording me? DANIEL Evidence. AMARA Evidence of what? DANIEL That my wife is beautiful even when she's sleeping. She smiles. --- INT. BEDROOM — NIGHT Amara lies beside Daniel. She suddenly becomes quiet. DANIEL What's wrong? AMARA Daniel... DANIEL Hmm? AMARA Do you ever feel afraid? He turns toward her. DANIEL Afraid of what? She hesitates. AMARA Losing everything. Daniel studies her face. DANIEL Why are you saying that? AMARA I don't know. She touches her stomach. AMARA I just have this strange feeling. Daniel takes her hand. DANIEL Nothing is going to happen. DANIEL Because our baby deserves a welcome party. Amara laughs. AMARA What if it's a girl? Daniel thinks. DANIEL Then I'm finished. AMARA Why? DANIEL Two women in one house? He shakes his head. DANIEL My salary won't survive. Amara laughs. Then suddenly... She becomes emotional. AMARA Daniel. DANIEL Hmm? AMARA Promise me something. DANIEL Anything. AMARA No matter what happens... His hands shake. DANIEL Where are the car keys? AMARA Daniel! DANIEL I'm coming! He finds them. He rushes to her. DANIEL Can you walk? AMARA I don't know! He supports her. DANIEL It's okay. I've got you. They leave. --- EXT. HOSPITAL — NIGHT The car stops. Daniel rushes around and helps Amara out. Nurses bring a wheelchair. AMARA Daniel! He holds her hand. DANIEL I'm here. AMARA Don't leave me. DANIEL I won't. They rush inside. --- INT. DELIVERY CORRIDOR — NIGHT Nurses wheel Amara away. Daniel follows. DANIEL I'm her husband! A nurse stops him. NURSE Sir, you have to wait here. DANIEL But she's scared! NURSE We'll take care of her. Amara reaches for Daniel. AMARA Daniel! He grabs her hand. DANIEL Look at me. She looks at him. DANIEL You promised me we'd raise this child together. AMARA Yes. DANIEL So keep your promise. She nods through tears. The doors close. Daniel stands alone. His smile slowly disappears. --- SCENE 9 — THE BEGINNING OF THE LIE INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR — LATER THAT NIGHT Daniel paces nervously. He looks at the clock. An hour passes. Then another. A nurse walks past him. He stops her. DANIEL Please... what's happening? NURSE The doctor is with her. DANIEL Is my wife okay? The nurse hesitates. NURSE They're doing everything they can. She walks away. Daniel's face changes. Then— A BABY'S CRY echoes from somewhere down the corridor. Daniel freezes. His eyes fill with tears. He smiles. DANIEL My baby... He takes a step toward the sound. Then another. But suddenly— A different nurse rushes into a restricted room. Daniel doesn't notice. Inside the room... A DOCTOR stands over two tiny hospital bassinets. One baby is alive. The other is motionless. A frightened nurse stands beside him. NURSE Doctor... The doctor looks at the living baby. Then at the dead baby. NURSE What are we going to do? The doctor says nothing. His phone rings. He answers. A MAN'S VOICE comes through. MAN'S VOICE My wife still doesn't know? DOCTOR She's still unconscious. MAN'S VOICE And the baby? The doctor looks at the living child. A long silence. DOCTOR We have one. MAN'S VOICE Alive? The doctor closes his eyes. DOCTOR Yes. MAN'S VOICE Then you know what to do. The doctor looks at the nurse. The nurse looks terrified. NURSE Doctor... DOCTOR Nobody can know. Outside the room, Daniel is still smiling. He doesn't know that his entire life is about to change. He looks toward the delivery room. DANIEL Amara... Inside the restricted room, the nurse slowly reaches toward the living baby.
