The Rejection Oath
The silver basin is already waiting for my blood when Caelan says my name.
"Elara Veyne."
His voice should be the final step of my Luna Ascension. I have heard it in rehearsal, in council chambers, in the quiet hours when he promised that we would carry Mooncrest together. The hall is packed now: elders in dark ceremonial coats, warriors along the walls, healers beside the east arch, and delegates from neighboring packs seated beneath their banners.
King Ronan Valerius sits on the raised guest dais beneath the blackthorn crest.
Caelan does not look at the basin.
He looks at me.
Something inside my chest tightens before he speaks again.
"I, Caelan Draven, Alpha of Mooncrest, reject the Moonbound bond between us."
For one impossible second, nobody moves.
Then the bond breaks.
Pain strikes beneath my ribs, sharp enough to bend my knees. Nyra surges under my skin, not as a voice but as instinct - run, hide, tear the room apart, do anything except stand here while hundreds of people smell grief pouring from me.
I lock my knees.
Caelan's face goes pale. He feels it too. Our heartbeats, once caught in that strange Moonbound rhythm, stumble apart like two dancers forced into different songs.
"Finish it," Elder Corvin Gant says from the royal delegation.
Caelan's jaw hardens.
The rejection requires full names. Direct presence. No half-measures.
He knew that before he brought me here.
"I reject Elara Veyne as my Moonbound mate."
A murmur moves through the hall.
My palms burn. I curl my fingers before anyone can see them shake.
I should say something. Pack custom would allow me to answer, curse him, strike the basin from its stand. There are old stories about rejected mates collapsing at the feet of their Alphas, begging them to reconsider.
I will not give Mooncrest that story.
"On what grounds?" I ask.
Caelan's expression shifts. He expected pain. Maybe anger. Not a question.
"Elara."
"No." My voice is quieter than his, but the hall has gone so silent that it carries. "You interrupted a Luna Ascension in front of the Crown. You rejected a recognized Moonbound bond. On what grounds?"
Beta Orrin Ashfall looks down.
That scares me more than Caelan's face.
One of Mooncrest's senior elders rises. "The council has received evidence concerning the Veyne line."
My mother's name is suddenly everywhere without anyone saying it.
The old whispers return with brutal efficiency.
Cursed blood.
A vanished woman.
A family better discussed behind closed doors.
"What evidence?" I ask.
The elder's mouth thins. "A historical prophecy authenticated under Moonwell authority. It warns that Veyne blood beside an Alpha will bring death to his line and ruin to the pack."
My body is still tearing itself apart from the inside, but my training takes over.
Archivist first. Hurt woman later.
"Original record?"
A pause.
"Under council protection."
"Date?"
Another pause.
"Classified."
I almost laugh.
Not because anything is funny.
Because I spent seven years cataloging Mooncrest records, and no genuine prophecy is classified after being used to alter succession.
Caelan steps closer.
The bond reacts before I do. Agony races across my sternum.
He stops.
Good.
At least his body remembers the damage his mouth has begun.
"Elara, I did what I had to do."
There it is. Duty.
Caelan uses the word without saying it.
Mooncrest is not rich. Winter grain contracts are fragile. Our eastern logging rights are under review. Frostmere has been circling our trade routes for months, offering help with one hand and measuring our throat with the other.
I know all of that.
I also know he slept beside me three nights ago and said nothing.
"You had to humiliate me publicly?" I ask.
His eyes flash with something dangerously close to shame. "This is bigger than us."
"Then it should survive questions."
A few people shift.
Not Mooncrest people.
Visitors.
I glance toward the royal dais.
The Lican King has not moved since Caelan began.
Ronan Valerius is larger than most men in the room, but that is not what unsettles me. It is the stillness. He watches like someone who has already noticed three things everyone else missed.
His attention drops to the ceremonial table.
To the documents beside Caelan's hand.
Then back to me.
The elder speaks again. "The ascension is suspended. Miss Veyne will be escorted from the hall while the council completes the transition."
Miss Veyne.
Five minutes ago, they were preparing to call me Luna.
Now they want me removed before I can ask another question.
Two warriors step forward.
Nyra presses against my instincts, furious at being handled while wounded.
I raise one hand.
"Do not touch me."
The warriors stop.
Caelan's mouth tightens. "Elara, please."
"Please what?"
"Don't make this worse."
That almost does what the rejection could not.
It nearly breaks me.
Not because he rejected me.
Because after doing it, he still thinks my job is to protect him from the consequences.
The silver basin gleams between us. My ceremonial blood remains unoffered. The Luna oath remains unfinished.
I straighten.
"If the council claims my bloodline is dangerous enough to overturn a Moonbound bond and a Luna Ascension, then the evidence belongs in the hearing record."
"There will be no hearing tonight," the elder says.
I look at him. "Then you should not have acted tonight."
A sharp breath sounds somewhere near the dais.
Maybe amusement. Maybe surprise.
Caelan lowers his voice. "Leave with dignity."
I meet his eyes.
"I am."
I turn toward the main doors.
The first step hurts.
The second is worse.
By the third, the fracture in my chest feels like a blade being drawn slowly through bone, but I do not stop.
The hall doors begin to open.
Behind me, a chair scrapes across stone.
Not a Mooncrest chair.
Every wolf in the room reacts before I turn. The air changes with the pressure of old power - not domination, not command, but rank recognized so deeply that instinct notices before thought does.
King Ronan Valerius is standing.
His gaze passes over Caelan, the council, the prepared documents, and finally me.
"No one removes the witness," he says.
Caelan goes rigid. "Your Majesty, this is an internal Mooncrest matter."
Ronan's expression does not change.
"You made it a Crown matter when you rejected a designated Luna during ascension."
The elder begins, "The pack has authority -"
"Not over the review you just triggered."
Ronan descends one step from the dais.
His voice remains calm.
That makes the words land harder.
"By the Founding Compact and Public Rejection Review, the transition is suspended."
Caelan stares at him.
I forget the pain for half a heartbeat.
Ronan looks at the warriors nearest me.
"Stand down."
They do.
Then the Lican King turns his attention to the council.
"Mooncrest will produce the prophecy, its chain of custody, and every document prepared before tonight's ceremony."
A cold silence settles over the hall.
Ronan's eyes flick once toward the papers beside Caelan.
Prepared before tonight.
He noticed.
So did I.
"The Crown," he says, "is opening a legitimacy review."
