The Ex- Chapter 10 In which she was offered a job POV-AMARA ----------------------------------------------------- Everything I had done for the past year is in that building. My achievements, my life, everything. I wasn"t about to let it all go down the drain. With frantic steps, I made my wave through the crowd of people. Wavering through limbs and people. Letting out a few "sorrie"s" and "excuse me"s" along the way. The police waved their hands in the air, not letting anyone through. I didn"t care. I scurried off into the hot, burning building. That was until a glint of silver caught the edge of my eye. It was a lighter. I frowned. Squinting my eyes to see who it was. The hooded individual then disappeared into the mounds of people. I shook my head, I was probably imagining things. The hot atmosphere really got to me. The smoke making me cough. I grabbed the hem of my shirt and put it up to cover my mouth and nose. I was on my way. I couldn"t take the elevator, it wasn"t safe. The smoke was everywhere. The fire burned with its beautiful luminescent glow. I"d say it was captivating, if it wasn"t about to kill me. Frantically, running up the stairs. Sweating not just from the temperature of the fire but the exercise of running up the stairs. Continuously coughing I felt a shiver down my spine. I was frightened. Why did I have to do this? Was it really worth it? I might not come out of this alive. I couldn"t do this not just to myself but my daughter. This was all for her. Finally reaching the top in what felt like forever. I screamed when something fell, the fire spreading. At this point I was coughing frantically. This was it. I was not going to live through this. My vision was blurred from the tears. Not for me being close to death. But for my daughter. I wiped them away with my arm. I was determined I was going to live through this. I pushed and made my way to my office. Avoiding any fire. I got in and closed the door. Searching through the papers. Everything important I had done. Gone. Just gone. Too busy going through paper that I didn"t notice I was encompassed by the smoke. My measly shirt wasn"t going to help me through this. I coughed and coughed. Inhaling most of it. I was suffocating. Part of the roof fell onto the floor of my office. I had thrown myself out of the way. A sharp pain went through my leg. I hissed at the unbearable pain shooting up my leg. Crawling to the corner of the room. Hoping and praying someone would come help me. Black dots danced in my vision. The door burst open. All I saw was a silhouette and feeling lightweight before I passed out. POV-LUCIAN I was driving to my building, I needed to get things done. I was harsh to Amara and I regret it. But now isn"t time for that. The vibration of my phone in my back pocket had me stop thinking about it. I held it up to my ear. Keeping one hand on the steering wheel. "Lucian." I introduced formally. "Sir there has been an accident." My face contorted into a worried expression. "Talk already, what happened?" I was getting impatient. "The "L" building has caught fire." My heart stopped in the moment. All I could think about is Amara. With that I hung up and drove as fast as I could towards the building. On my way I saw it ablaze. Oh my god. Getting out of the car and maneuvering my way through the crowd. Calling out her name but not getting a response had my heart aching. Someone walked out of the building. The guy was pushed into an emergency stretcher for medical care. "Did you see Amara?" I was practically begging god that he knew where she was. "I saw her running to her office." He let out a few coughs. That was all I needed I broke into a sprint to find her. That"s the only thing I care about at the moment. Making my way up. The stairs were tiresome but it wasn"t my main concern at the moment, not when Amara was in danger. I avoided the fallen materials on the floor and the cluttered mess. I knew where her office was. Thank god. The door was jammed. My only choice was to break it in. Breaking through I saw her crumpled body on the ground with a sickening gash and blood on her leg. I made my way to her and picked her up. The adrenalin pumping through my body was enough to set me into overdrive. I had to save her. Even if it costs my own life. POV-AMARA Beep Beep Beep The annoying sound wouldn"t stop. Cracking one eyelid open before opening the other. What I saw was Lucian in an awkward position. Asleep. He looked peaceful and tranquil. I was parched. I reached for the glass of water that was conveniently sitting on the bedside table. When I was satisfied I put it down. I looked up and saw Lucian standing by the bed. I jumped, from the close proximity and the fast movement caused pain to shoot from my leg. I groaned and let a string of curses to fall from my lips. "Careful." It wasn"t a statement it was more of a command. "What happened?" In that moment I remembered. "No." Everything came crashing to me like a tidal wave. "The building caught fire. I saved you." I looked away from him not able to keep eye contact. "My building, my job. What am I going to do." I stuffed my head into my hands. "From now on you work for me. Welcome to the Bello Industries Ms.White." -MORE CHAPTERS ON WATTPAD
