The Mark He Left
Whose mark is that, little runaway?
Kael’s voice scraped across the clubhouse like gravel under boots. One massive hand locked around my throat and pinned me hard against the blood stained wall of the Iron Fang compound. The other hand was already ripping my shirt open, buttons scattering across the concrete floor. His golden eyes burned with five years of pure unfiltered rage. Behind him the entire pack stood in absolute silence. No one moved. No one spoke. They just watched.
My six year old son stood frozen in the doorway. He clutched the stuffed wolf I bought him the day I fled. The same storm gray eyes as the monster currently cutting off my air stared straight back at me.
I asked you a question, Wren. Kael’s thumb brushed the half healed mating bite he gave me the night he destroyed me. Whose. f*****g. Mark.
The pressure on my throat tightened just enough to make black spots dance at the edges of my vision. I could smell him. Leather. Motor oil. The sharp metallic scent of a wolf who had not let himself calm in years. My pulse slammed against his palm. Every instinct screamed at me to fight or run. I did neither. I had walked back into this den on purpose.
The clubhouse reeked of stale beer, cigarette smoke, and the heavy musk of dominant wolves. Neon signs flickered over the long bar. Pool tables stood abandoned. Dozens of hard faces stared at us from every corner. Patched leather vests. Chains. Guns. These were not civilized pack wolves. These were the Iron Fang. The most vicious werewolf motorcycle club on the West Coast. And their Alpha had me by the throat in front of every single one of them.
Kael leaned in until his mouth nearly touched mine. His breath was hot. His free hand finished tearing my shirt open and shoved the fabric aside. Cool air hit my skin. The old mating mark sat high on the curve of my breast, half scarred, still faintly pink after five years. His golden eyes locked on it like it personally offended him.
Speak. The word was a snarl. Or I will make you speak.
My son’s small voice cut through the tension. Mommy?
Kael’s head snapped toward the doorway. For one fractured second the rage in his face cracked. He saw the boy. Saw the stuffed wolf. Saw the same gray eyes that stared back at him from the mirror every morning. The hand on my throat loosened just enough for me to drag in a ragged breath.
I forced the words out. It is yours. It has always been yours.
Kael’s gaze slammed back to mine. Liar. You ran. You hid. You let another male touch what belongs to me.
No one has touched me. The words scraped my throat raw. No one.
His nostrils flared. He was scenting me right there in front of the entire club. Checking for any trace of another male. When he found none the rage in his eyes shifted into something darker. Hungrier. More dangerous.
You come back after five years. You walk into my house with a pup who carries my blood and my eyes. And you expect me to believe you stayed untouched. His hand slid from my throat to my jaw and forced my face up. You expect me to believe that mark is still mine alone.
I did not look away. I could not afford to look away. My son was still standing in that doorway. The incomplete bond was still rotting him from the inside. Every day without Kael’s full claim pushed him closer to the edge. I had tried everything. Black market healers. Stolen pack medicine. Blood rituals that left me vomiting for days. Nothing worked. Only the Alpha’s complete claim and his seed could stop the decay. So I came back. I walked into the place that tried to kill me and I dropped to my knees in front of every wolf who once cheered for my death.
Kael’s thumb pressed against my lower lip. Hard. The pack remained silent. Waiting. Watching their Alpha decide whether to finish what he started five years ago or take something else instead.
You rejected me, I whispered. You called me a weak human w***e in front of every wolf in this room. You ordered them to put a bullet in my head.
His golden eyes flared brighter. And you lived. That was your first mistake.
The hand on my jaw tightened. He leaned closer until his mouth brushed the shell of my ear. The second mistake was coming back. The third was bringing my son into this room like a shield.
He is dying. The words left me in a broken rush. The bond is incomplete. It is killing him. It is killing you too. I can smell it on you. Your wolf is tearing itself apart.
For the first time something like shock crossed Kael’s face. Then it vanished under pure lethal focus. He released my jaw, grabbed my arm, and dragged me away from the wall. The pack parted for him without a word. Boots scraped. Leather creaked. No one dared speak.
Kael hauled me across the clubhouse floor toward the heavy metal door that led to his private wing. My son took one step forward.
Stay, Kael barked without looking back. The boy froze again.
I twisted in his grip. Let me talk to him. He is terrified.
You lost the right to make demands the night you ran. Kael shoved the metal door open and pulled me through. It slammed shut behind us with a final heavy clang. The noise of the clubhouse cut off instantly. We were alone in a long concrete hallway lit by bare bulbs. His private territory. No one entered without permission. No one left without his say.
He did not slow down. He dragged me past closed doors until we reached the last one at the end of the hall. His room. He kicked it open, shoved me inside, and locked the door with a heavy bolt that sounded like a gunshot.
The space was large and sparse. A massive bed dominated the center. Black sheets. Metal headboard with thick rings bolted into the frame. A desk covered in maps and weapons. A single window covered by steel shutters. The air smelled like him. Pure dominant wolf. Territory. Ownership.
Kael turned to face me. He was still breathing hard. His golden eyes had not cooled. If anything they burned hotter now that we were alone.
Clothes off. The command was quiet. Absolute.
I did not move. My son is out there. He needs to know I am safe.
He needs to know his mother belongs to the Alpha who owns this compound. Kael took one step forward. Then another. Clothes. Off. Now. Or I will rip them off and you will not like how I do it.
My hands shook as I reached for the ruined edges of my shirt. I let the torn fabric fall. Then the bra. Then the rest. Cool air kissed every inch of exposed skin. The old mating mark stood out stark against my chest. Kael’s gaze locked on it and stayed there.
He crossed the remaining distance in two strides. One hand fisted in my hair and yanked my head back. The other hand gripped my hip hard enough to bruise. His mouth crashed down on the mark and bit. Not hard enough to break skin. Just hard enough to remind me who put it there.
Five years, he growled against my skin. Five years I hunted for any trace of you. Five years I told myself you were dead. And the entire time you were out there raising my son and letting this mark fade.
It never faded. My voice cracked. I tried to make it fade. I could not.
Good. His teeth scraped the scar again. Because tonight I am going to open it again. I am going to knot you until you cannot walk. I am going to force this bond open so wide that neither of us can ever close it. And when I am done you will understand the only place you exist is under me.
He released my hair and shoved me backward onto the bed. I landed hard on the black sheets. Kael stood over me and started unbuckling his belt with deliberate slow movements. The heavy buckle clinked. Leather slid through loops. His golden eyes never left mine.
Outside the door, faint and distant, I heard my son’s voice call for me one more time.
Kael’s head tilted. He heard it too. A dark smile cut across his mouth.
He will learn, Kael said quietly. Just like you will. You do not leave the Iron Fang. You do not leave me. And after tonight the entire pack will know exactly who owns both of you.
He stepped out of his jeans. The thick heavy length of him was already hard and flushed dark. The base had begun to swell. The promise of a knot. He climbed onto the bed and caged me in with his body. One hand pinned both of my wrists above my head. The other forced my thighs apart.
Look at me, he ordered.
I did.
When I push inside you, he said, voice pure gravel, you will say my name. When I knot you, you will beg. And when the bond snaps fully open you will understand there is no world left where you get to run from me again.
He lined himself up. The broad head of him pressed against me. I was not ready. He did not care.
Outside the steel shutters something howled. Not a pack wolf. Something else. Something that did not belong on Iron Fang territory.
Kael froze for half a second. His head snapped toward the window. The howl came again, closer this time, layered with a second voice that made the hair on my arms stand up.
His golden eyes cut back to mine. Pure lethal promise burned inside them.
We are not alone, he said. And whatever just crossed my borders is about to learn what happens when someone interrupts an Alpha claiming his mate.
He thrust forward in one brutal stroke and buried himself to the hilt as the first gunshot exploded somewhere outside the compound.
