CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE SHE HAD REJECTED me. Flat-out. Perhaps not as bad as I had rejected her since she at least listened to me for a minute before slamming the door in my face. The force of the door closing had bruised my fingertips. I sulked back to my apartment, guilt consuming my thoughts. In a desperate move, I called in some favors and sent her the bagels she’d loved in New York. I was sure it would help break the ice, but she didn’t contact me after, and I knew she’d received the package. By Monday, I was itching to visit her again to try and plead my case. I sat in my office, staring at her empty office walls, wondering if the chair still smelled like her. I did have some pride left and stopped myself from walking over and sitting in the chair just to get a whiff of her sweet scen
