Chapter 1:The Girl No One Wanted
The wind carried whispers through the towering pines as I ran barefoot across the forest floor. The scent of rain lingered in the air, mingling with damp earth and wildflowers. My lungs burned, but I didn't slow down. Running was the only time I felt free.
The only time I forgot who I was.
Or rather...
Who everyone believed I was.
"Luna!"
The voice echoed through the trees.
I sighed and stopped beside a crystal-clear stream.
"I know you're here!" Ethan shouted.
A moment later, my adoptive brother stepped through the bushes, brushing leaves from his dark hair.
"There you are."
"I just wanted a little peace."
He frowned.
"You know Father doesn't like you wandering this far."
I looked toward the mountains that stretched across the horizon.
"I wasn't going anywhere."
He followed my gaze.
"You're looking at the Lycan Kingdom again."
I smiled faintly.
"I wonder what it's like."
He became serious.
"You shouldn't."
"Why?"
"Because that's where monsters live."
I laughed softly.
"That's what everyone says."
"It's true. The Lycan King has never lost a battle. Entire packs bow before him."
His words stirred something strange inside me.
Not fear.
Curiosity.
Ever since I was a child, stories about the Lycan King had fascinated me. They called him ruthless. Merciless. Untouchable.
No one spoke his name without lowering their voice.
King Kael Draven.
The most powerful Lycan alive.
They said his wolf was as black as midnight and twice the size of any Alpha's beast.
To me, he was nothing more than a legend.
A ruler I would never meet.
If only I had known fate was already weaving our paths together.
When we returned to the Ashthorne Pack, the welcoming warmth of home vanished.
Conversations stopped.
Eyes followed me.
Some with pity.
Most with contempt.
"There she is."
"The wolfless girl."
"I heard she's twenty-one and still hasn't shifted."
"What kind of Luna can't even call her wolf?"
Their whispers cut deeper than they realized.
I kept my head down.
Years ago, I had learned that silence hurt less than arguing.
My adoptive mother, Mira, stood outside our cottage.
"Luna."
Her gentle smile eased the ache in my chest.
"Come inside. Dinner is ready."
The small house smelled of fresh bread and herb stew.
Rowan, my adoptive father and the pack healer, looked up from the table.
"You were in the forest again."
"I needed to think."
He nodded slowly.
"You spend too much time alone."
"Maybe because no one else wants me around."
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked away.
Mother reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
"Don't listen to them."
I forced a smile.
"I try not to."
Father cleared his throat.
"The Moon Festival begins tomorrow."
My stomach tightened.
Every year, unmated wolves gathered beneath the full moon.
Some discovered their destined mates.
Others celebrated another year of strength.
For me...
It was another reminder that I was different.
No wolf.
No mate.
No place.
That evening, I slipped outside after everyone had gone to sleep.
The moon hung low above the trees.
Beautiful.
Silent.
Watching.
I walked toward the ancient stone circle hidden deep within the forest.
No one came here anymore.
The elders claimed the place was cursed.
That only fools wandered beneath its broken pillars.
Perhaps I was a fool.
As I stepped into the center of the circle, a strange warmth spread beneath my feet.
The air became still.
The forest fell silent.
Even the insects stopped singing.
A silver light burst from the cracked stones.
I stumbled backward.
"What..."
The ground trembled.
The light swirled around me like ribbons dancing in the wind.
My heartbeat thundered inside my chest.
Then...
A voice.
Soft.
Ancient.
Powerful.
"The lost heir has returned."
I spun around.
"Who's there?"
No one answered.
The light disappeared as quickly as it had come.
The forest returned to life.
Birds chirped.
Leaves rustled.
The wind blew once more.
I stood frozen.
Had I imagined it?
Slowly, I touched my chest.
For the first time in my life...
A faint pulse answered from somewhere deep inside me.
Not my heart.
Something older.
Something sleeping.
Something alive.
Far beyond the mountains, inside the obsidian halls of the Lycan Palace, the Lycan King jolted awake from a dream.
His golden eyes flashed open.
His wolf growled.
One sentence echoed through his mind.
"She has awakened."
Kael rose from his bed and walked to the palace balcony overlooking the endless forest.
The wind carried a scent he had never encountered before.
Wild.
Pure.
Irresistible.
His wolf surged beneath his skin.
"Mate."
Kael's expression hardened.
"Find her."
Somewhere in the darkness, destiny had begun its relentless march, and neither the forgotten girl nor the feared Lycan King could escape what the Moon Goddess had written long before either of them was born.
