Alissa "Who do you think you will be mated to?" I asked my best friend, Lizzy. "I don't know. I can only pray it's a member of the pack house so you and I will be together often!" She answered excitedly, giving me a knowing smile. A blush rose to my cheeks. "What are you saying. I do not have a mate yet." Lizzy raised a brow. " Says the one who can't keep her hands off the Alpha." As if conjuring his presence, Alpha Nate walked into the pack compound, his head inclined towards the beta as they talked. I couldn't hide the excitement that rose from the pit of my stomach from just looking at him. As if sensing my presence, he turned and caught my eye, then winked. "I saw that!" Lizzy whispered from beside me, her tone full of accusation. I tore my gaze away from the Alpha to see my friend staring at me and shaking her head. "I feel like at this point, he should just choose you, instead of this show you both put on. Some of us would like to tick certain prospects off our lists so we know who to look forward to." It was no news around the pack that I and the Alpha had a thing. If only they knew what the thing was. In my world, there was nothing like fated mates. People didn't just come of age and meet their mates fated for them by the moon goddess. In fact, not many people believed in the moon goddess anymore as we were left to make decisions for ourselves. It was why the council, after much deliberation and in order to end the mating chaos, had come up with the idea to assign mates. And the process that led to it was secret, and conducted by the elders. The mating bond to us, only clicked when we were assigned mates. "It's not that easy, Lizzy. It's all up to the council." I said shyly. Inside me, I knew I was just being polite. Alpha Nate had every right to chose his mate if he wanted. I had prayed for him to do it, but he had once told me that he liked things to go in a certain order. "If you say so." Lizzy didn't sound convinced. "I know the council has eyes." Sometimes , the council favored relationships that started before the mating ceremony. And I was banking on that too. I shifted nervously in my seat as Nate pulled away from his beta and walked towards us. "Uhmm.. incoming!" Lizzy whispered loudly, then pretty much disappeared, pretending to tidy up the area we were, leaving me to face my visitor alone. I knew my face was completely red at this point, but it was the effect he had on me. How could I not blush as the sight of the most handsome man I had ever set my eyes on. At twenty-five, Nate was stunning. No. He was unarguably the most handsome man on earth. From his thick black hair that was cut in a way that framed his face perfectly, to those brown eyes I had fallen in love with, and to his long straight nose, he had no competitors. And don't even start with those full lips that had kissed me into submission and surrender. He was way over six foot tall, with broad shoulders, which was why he pretty much blocked the sun when he came to stand in front of me. "Nate." I smiled, getting off the chair and pouting when I only gained a few inches. He pulled me into a small warm hug, and I almost melted in his arms. "I didn't think I will see you here today." He pulled away, and looked around. I shrugged, conscious of the looks coming out way. "My dad hurled me down here to join the others in the preparation of the ceremony. I couldn't say no." He nodded, a look crossing his face. "The ceremony." A smile made it to his lips. "Actually, I have news for you about that." My heart immediately leaped to my stomach. "Wh..what news?" A small tingle of excitement made its way up my body as his smile grew. "I spoke to the council today." Those words had my ears standing. "Maybe, just maybe I would be chosing my mate myself. That is if I haven't already." He ended it with another wink. My mouth dropped open in shock and then I was throwing my arms around his neck in an exciting hug. "That is the best thing I have ever heard since you asked me to be your girlfriend." My voice was low, but he heard me clearly, chuckling as he pinched my waist. "Alpha Nate!" Our hug and happiness was broken apart by a familiar voice and we both looked in the direction the voice came from to see Gloria, her expression flat, standing just a few feet away. "What are you doing here?" Nate asked, still keeping his hand on my waist. If her eyes were lasers, I'm sure Nate's hand would be on fire. "Dad asked for you to come. And it's urgent." She was breathing hard, like she had ran all the way here. Gloria was the daughter of one of the council elders. A position she used to hang around Nate as she pleased. Even the pups could tell she had a crush on him. I felt Nate tense next to me. "Why? Is there a problem?" His question seemed to annoy her. "You know I do not have any idea of your discussions, but he asked to see you immediately." I saw that he was about to protest again, and jumped in. "You should go to him. Maybe it's about what we talked about?" I mean, I saw no reason why she was being sent to get him for something urgent, when they could have send to pack guard. Nate reluctantly pulled away. "I'll see you tonight." He squeezed my waist, and was out the door before I realized he hadn't even kissed me. "That was weird." Lizzy said, appearing out of nowhere. I flinched slightly, then frowned. "She said it's urgent." "Alissa, I don't think a pack elder would be sending his daughter to go get an alpha." Her eyes were in the direction both had just went. "What do you mean?" "We'll find out in minute." Before I could ask what she also meant by that,Lizzy was dragging me with her. My first sign to back away would have been the moment my wolf, Lisa, started to shake restlessly, the more we trailed them. The second was the sound of moans coming just from behind the building they had gone. I knew what was happening before I even saw it. My throat tightened, and my fingers tingled. But I kept walking, following the sound of lips smacking together. Maybe they had just passed a couple who were kissing. It couldn't be them. But as I peeked my head through the corner, the sight that greeted me almost had me collapsing to the floor. There, a few feet away from me, stood my mate, struggling to rip of every piece of clothing on Gloria as they kissed. Nate literally had his tongue buried in her throat and one hand squeezing her how naked boobs. I was stunned. My heart was in shambles. Something broke inside of me. "Nate.." I didn't mean to speak, but his name left my lips through my haze of pain and betrayal. The two sprung away like the other was on fire. I would never forget the guilt on Nates face, or the satisfaction on Gloria's. "Alissa.. s**t!" He hissed, trying to pull his trousers back on. Were they that horny that it had taken them only seconds to get naked? How long has this been going on? I turned away, dragging Lizzy who was set on confronting them. "Let's just go. I want to go home." "But_" "Just leave it." I said firmly. I underestimated just how fast Nate was, because he was in front of us in a flash. "You_" "I'm your Alpha so stand back!' he commanded Lizzy, his eyes stern. "You have no right to speak to us that way, not after what I just saw you piece of shift!" I wasn't going to let my hurt show. He didn't deserve it. "No, but you will have to listen to what I say." He answered back, his eyes cold. "You still belong to me." How dare he? "Not after today, I don't." I threw back. "Oh you do, Alissa. You belong to me, and nothing can change that." I expected an apology, but instead all I got were words that were like a slap to the face. Just then Gloria came and stood by his side, wrapping her arm around him with a snarky smile on her face. Lizzy cursed from where she stood. I don't know why, but a part of me expected him to push her away, but he didn't. I swallowed back anything I wanted to say and just shook my head and walked away. Tears flowed freely.
