CHAPTER 2

Tristan's POV: The scout in front of me trembled. He kept his eyes low, avoiding my eyes. I stared at the single piece of typed report he handed over to me. The words in here weren't even up to ten paragraphs. "Is that all the information you could get?" I questioned. I couldn't be bothered to hide my glare. The scout in front of me, and the object of my annoyance bowed in apology. "I'm sorry. I'll do my best to work even harder." He apologized, bowing twice. "It's not just enough to work harder." I sighed. It's night, I'm so damn exhausted. All I wanted to do was go back to my apartment and just rest. But no. I had things to do. I had to go through all the information from scouts at the border. It was so exhausting and my anger had started to boil at its peak as the scouts are beginning to slack in their duties and this is really getting out of hand. "I apologize for my incompetence." The scout said and bowed again. His constant bowing was getting annoying. What's the point of saying sorry if you don't plan to change? Or even at least do a better job?! "I'm glad you're self aware." I said darkly, glaring at the scout. "Better get it done. Tomorrow evening latest. And get out of my sight." "Yes Alpha." The scout said and briskly walked away. I sighed. I crumbled up the paper and tossed it aside. I rubbed my temples. Where does Cody even find these people?! I turned to leave, but I heard a woman shout out. "Don't touch her!" This made me pause. I turned to the direction of the shout. I was starting to become aware of the excited whispers floating in the air. I wondered what could be getting people excited at this time of the night. Shouldn't they be asleep or something? I looked around, narrowing my eyes. And I could see people gathering around a tree. What could it be that was exciting them about a damn tree? I turned to leave, retire to my quarters and sleep. Whatever they were doing, is none of my business. Cody was around the area anyways so I didn't expect that anything would go wrong. I wanted to move but I paused, an inexplicable tug pulling me to the heat of the excitement. I tried to walk away, but that tug pulled me back. "This better be worth my time." I murmured, turning and heading in the direction of the small crowd excited about the damned tree. The people sensed me and made way, their whispers reducing in volume. As I got closer, I could make out a figure lying against the tree. I paused, staring at the scene in front of me. There was a girl, she looked young. But she was so battered to the eye. Her gown was torn and bloody, her skin pale. Her long hair was white, or maybe had turned such a color from suffering. She opened her eyes, tired bright blue eyes staring right into my soul. Her face was stained with dirt and grime, such that I couldn't make out her features. Just those eyes that shone like the brightest jewels. I stopped. It felt like a bolt of lightning shot through my chest, a rough pull to this girl. My wolf jumped in excitement inside him, howling and rejoicing. "MATE!" Dane, my wolf growled. Mate?! This girl is my mate?! A strange woman? "You've got to be kidding me." I gasped. I need to get to the borders to check on my Beta whom I had to assign to bother duties. I never imagined that I would be involved in this mess. I took one more glance at the girl before walking away. She blinked, then lost consciousness again. The sounds of the people faded into nothing. I became aware of Dane jumping inside me, howling and threatening to be let free. The girl breathing so shallow, she looked dead already. "SAVE HER!" Dane growled. I beckoned on my Beta who on sighting me from afar walked up to me. “Who is that girl laying unconscious by the tree” I asked Cody, my Beta. “The scouts caught her close to the boarder running towards our pack. Before they could get to interrogate her, she collapsed. Maybe due to fright or exhaustion”. We walked back to where the girl laid. I asked him to carry the girl so we could head back to the pack house. He bent down and grabbed the girl, nearly falling over, he wasn't expecting her to be so light. She groaned, her face squeezing in pain. He held her bridal style. This girl can't be my mate even though she was dying, I knew I had to do something to save her and afterwards get information from her. The moon goddess must be joking this time. She's not from this pack, her scent is so different and strange. And what on earth has she gone through that left her so battered up. Cody held her close while I walked behind. The pack house was a considerable distance from the borders. "...stop....please ....." The girl groaned, her voice pained and strained. We pushed past the crowd. They were already whispering, wondering what their Alpha and beta was doing with a rogue. The pack house got closer and closer. Just a few steps away, I saw Victoria my chosen mate standing in front of the door. “Tristan, what took you so long?" She questioned, walking over to me with a smile on her face. Her smile died as she looked down at the girl in Cody's arms. Her eyes widened in alarm. "What is this about?" "She's ...she's a rogue!" I answered, . "We saw her at the boarder, I think she's dying!" "Oh, I see!” she grumbled. "There's no time!" I shouted. "Take her to the pack doctor now!" The pack doctor lived in the annex behind the pack house. Cody held the girl close and rushed over to the doctor. I was vaguely aware of the eyes following me. We got to the doctor, and she was already waiting outside. She took the girl from Cody and took her into a private ward. She laid her down on a bed, checking her body for vitals. "My Alpha, she's almost gone." The doctor said with a sad shake of her head.
